I would recommend pulling with devestation. 5 ticks of damage from it will just about always break your roots. I recommend pulling with it from max distance, and then either a) using null absolution to finish them off or b) if they are more powerful and that won't kill them (for solo groups devestation / null absolution will kill most groups) using vulian intrusion (or previous version) before they get to you. This gives you a couple of seconds without them attacking you to get off a group root etc.

If you zone into Silent City from Sinking Sands (from the water on the north end of the zone, you swim in a cave by the Bay of ???, and there are big doors), just past the spiders in the water in front of you you can drop down to the area I am talking about. Using this back door used to require an access quest but I don't believe it does anymore.
