View Full Version : Building a better paladin tank

<DIV>As of late, I have been looking at my fellow paladins and how they have build thier chars. So far I have noticed that many of the "elitist" paladins focus a lot on stamina, and hence have close to 8k hp, though they also have a good amount of fabled.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>My paladin, at 70, with all my self buffs, 1h, shield, def stance, has the following</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>6,109 hp</DIV> <DIV>3,292 pwr</DIV> <DIV>4,178 AC</DIV> <DIV>47.7% avoidance</DIV> <DIV>345 str</DIV> <DIV>180 agi</DIV> <DIV>235 sta</DIV> <DIV>12 int</DIV> <DIV>266 wis</DIV> <DIV>2515 cold</DIV> <DIV>1659 disease (no dueling SKs for me....)</DIV> <DIV>3621 divine</DIV> <DIV>2169 heat</DIV> <DIV>3843 magic</DIV> <DIV>2582 mental</DIV> <DIV>3371 poison</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>As for armor, I have 4 pieces of legendary t7, 2 legendary t6, 1 treasured t7, and legendary t7 kite.</DIV> <DIV>Jewelery is 1 t6 fabled, 2 t7 legendary, 3 acrylias, and 1 t6 legendary, and FBSS (I like my 30% self haste)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Now, all but 4 of my spells/CAs are at adept3, 2 are mastered. In groups I make for a great tank, ussually getting several adds, and living... somehow... and I solo fairly well too.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Anyway, I myself want to tank a raid, thats basically my goal, to be a viable raid tank for my guild. So I see quite a few of my fellow "elitist" paladins with sta in the 400s, and a good deal more hp than I have, but they tend to have lowish str, and like me, the IQ of a stump. So is that the general way to go? Should I just try to get all t7 legendary, probably about half of the scalelord set, and Dragonscale pauldrons, and the greaves from the claymore line, etc.</DIV> <DIV>Well, I guess I have to do that stuff anyway, but if I want to MT a raid zone like Lab, should I focus almost completely on STA, which would in turn reduce my str, and power pool, or should I try to stay somewhat rounded?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>P.S. Prayer of Consecration, lvl 56.... 56 + 14 = 70... Why cant I find the upgrade to my group heal, or does it simply not exist? If now, why? Since everything else upgrades every 14 lvls, cept Brimstone and the teachings, why dont we get a new group heal at 70?</DIV>

Your Mitigation (AC) might be misleading. Please mouse over it and tell us what percentage damage from a level 70 opponent you will mitigate. My understanding is T6 gear might have higher raw mitigation, but its effectiveness degrades as you climb in level and face higher mobs. My raw mitigation is lower than your's, but all my armor slots are T7 legendary and one fabled. I'll check my percentage and post later as well. Normally I don't equip my CoP because I prefer my Awakened Scalelord BP with flowing thought and stats, if I equip CoP that number will climb. I'll post both raw numbers and percentages for comparisson sake.<div></div>

Can you post a link to your character so we can see what gear exactly you have on? I'm not focused at all for raid MTing, and I'm fairly certain all of my stats, including Sta are higher then yours listed. Obviously equipment upgrades are going to be key, as are resist upgrades in a general sense (though sets of resist gear would be a good thing) Grab peices of jewelery with +Mit on it. The Acrylia jewelery can probably be replaced in this case.</P> <P>Dump the FBSS. If you're MT'ing, the haste from the FBSS isn't going to be doing anything and it can be replaced with much better equipment.</P> <P>And Prayer of Consecration doesn't get an upgrade in this tier. While the progression seems to indicate it should, SOE stated that the +13 level thing is more of a guideline for them then a hard rule.</P>

<div></div>With a link to your actual equipment it would be much easier to give some hints to you, but in general I have to say:- Strength won't help you in any way as a Raidtank, with the right group setup you are WAY over cap, so IMHO every point in str is a complete waste, as MT you are the main focus of your teammates, so you are at ~100% mana or at 0% no matter if you have 400 oder 900 str- I'd say if you want to jugde and rate different equipment (in your way to a RAID MT) focus on:raw mitigation(T7 preferred) > raw Hitpoints > stamina > wisdom > resistsI'm at work now and can't logg in to give some exact numbers, but I'm at:~6400HP~4400 Mitigation~49% Avoidancearound 300sta, 320 wis5k cold4k heatpoison/noxious about 3k(special p/d resi gear in inventory)magic nearly 5kAnd I'm in ordinary gear, still on my way to get those Claymore timeline items and probably 1 or 2 relic armor pieces.Get rid of this acrylia crap, no resists at all, swap tough fleshy cord(broker!) for your fbss, get 2 hexdolls with 14 sta each, consider some of the nice T7 food/drinks with sta/wis/agi on it, use HP/sta or Miti potions ...Level 70 Paladin of Valor (so please excuse my extraordinary english <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />)<div></div>

Also don't forget about the Stamina line of AA's - even if you put 4 points into the Stamina starter you are getting an easy 20 stamina right there.I think my self buffed stamina is @ like 390ish depending on the gear that I switch out. <div></div>

I am looking for help on the Mitigation front here. Most of my stats are ok, but my mitigation has always been lower than other pallies, and I can't figure out why. I think my gear is pretty good for someone who hasn't raided much (had really really good luck on one t6 raid which is where most of my better peices come from). Self buffed (no potions) I stand at: 7309 HPS 3569 Power 3879 Mitigation 42.9% Avoidance Str: 305 Agi: 100 (eww... not sure why its so low!) Sta: 396 Int: 45 Wis: 346 Mitigation %: 49.6% vs lvl 70 opponent. Crush 50%, other two 49%. My normal Gear: Drakeborn Bludgeoner Grizzfazzle Sheild Ravasect Repellent Censer Dark Chitin Ring Plumptucket's Ruby Engagement Ring Wristband of Enduring x2 Hoo'Loh helmet Star Ruby Earring of Ethernere (yeah... seriously needs an upgrade!) Acid Flecked Necklace Wish-Forged Pauldrons Blood-Drenched BP of Xhorroz (Claymore reward) Xegonite bracer Gem Encrusted Gaunts Ash Root Cord Shining Greaves of the Arisen Talonlord Foosteel Sta hex doll x2 <div></div>

I have all but my shoulders and hands in tier 7 in my main gear and the 2 tier 6 pieces is the wish forged pauldrons and the flowing though gauntlets from court of al afraz also. Acrylia is fine as a starter set and you may want to keep it with your backup set of armor. There are certainly better wrist items that are from names/quests but is till have my acrylia bracelets on. For your shield, are you using grizzlefazzle's tower shield at least for the bonus on mit and avoidance/block precentage? Have you picked up the cuirass of protection for the hiigh melee low spell damage mobs? Have you done the hooluk signature hat quest in barren sky for the 505 mit helmet? </P> <P>You will find at level 70 that some of the best gear for us in MT mode is items that not only give us needed stats but are heavy on both health and power plus good on mitigation. Have you went to Den of Devourer with a good group and farmed that instance to get a couple of dark chitin and light chitin rings? Dark chitin has half the extra mitigation but killer stats/health/power while thelight chitin has good resists and double the mitigation. Do you have you health buff Adept 3 or master 1 for maximum health? When you chose your traits, did you go power/health regen or 2.5% health or power? What AA paths do you intend to try and how much have you put into them so far? For my guy i have my main adventuring gear/tank gear, a backup set from the gear that was replaced by my mt set. and a hodge podge of resist gear for heat/cold/poison/disease and magic. With the advent of repair kits i imagine i will sell of my backup set of gear and i only use the resist gear on known epic mobs in raids.<BR></P> <P>Something you ma want to look at is having a set of high intelligence gear also, I took a page from a fellow shadowknight and am currently forging some xegonite devout armor to get higher intelligence when i am not tanking. I try to get stamina when i can but i wil not sacrife other needed stats for it. Remember that in the right group, your personal stats/mitigation will look puny to what they can buff you to, especially when either urchin or bolster is on you. Spec yourself as a uber soloer with extra gear to swap out and you will feel more comfortable then trying to compete player X...<img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></P> <P>P.S. That still doesnt stop me from ispecting people constantly and either ask them or lookup on sites where their gear drops...<img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></P>

Without login to look. Here is what I have off the top of my head. HP - 7975 Mit - 4K+ (not sure the exact number I just got a new bracer that put it over 4K) 56.5% I think Avoid - 46.5% STR, STA, WIS all in the 350-400 Range AGI - Sub 200 I know I need to work on this a bit INT - 44 (I'm not DPS what do I need int for) Resists are 2.5K to about 5K though keeping in mind I resist gear and can push any 1 of them over 6K if I need and give up very little if any in terms of Mit and only 100-300 HP depending on what I change out. On a raid full buffed I'm getting close to 5K mit with close to 12K HP and still have not capped STA on raids yet. I did give up about 120 HP giving up my ring of fate for a Light Chitin Ring but the Dark Chitin kinda off sets that lose a bit. So far my gear is some T6 fabled, some T7 fabled (quested), fair amount of T7 Legendary with 1 or 2 T6 Legendary still, a small amount of T7 Treasured and a T5 STA hex doll. Sorry I can't see spending 4-6p for a Hex doll that is only going to give me 2 more STA. WIth and 8 second cast time the click effects are near useless so I stopped with them a long time ago. Now keep in mind I'm in a casual guild that has not even cleared most of DoF yet in fact we just got access to the 3 instances from Capturing Night and Day recently. The other night was are first Semi successful run in Lab and the only raid loot drop we got was the Fire brand Gusset (legendary) which I got as the first T7 loot winner for the guild. 99% of my stuff is obtainable in groups the T6 fabled maybe not be I have already seen plenty of group drops that put my T6 fabled to shame I just have not had a chance to get them. <div></div>

<P>Okay, guess ill explain my char in about as much detail as I can, or care to. So, in addition to the stuff in the first post.</P> <P> </P> <P>Mitigation is 55.5% total. (55% crush, 52% pierce, 57% slash)</P> <P>Equipment.... this is gonna be a while....</P> <P>Hoo'Loh's Knightly Helm</P> <P>Cuirass of Protection</P> <P>Cobalt Spaulders - Need to replace with Dragonscale Pauldrons.... quest sooo [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] long....</P> <P>Forearm Scalegaurd - Need to replace with Scalelord Wristgaurds</P> <P>Scalelord Gauntlets</P> <P>FBSS - Personally, I like this belt, I like how I can have 30% self buffed haste... Ill look into a replacement...</P> <P>Shining Greaves of the Arisen - Hoping to get the greaves from the claymore line... can a paladin get the grim greaves?</P> <P>Scalelord Sabatons - Trying to get Dark Majestic Sabatons</P> <P>Blade of the Bixies - Its a 1h katana.... I will not budge on this, less you find me a better 1h KATANA.... thats the key... KATANA...</P> <P>Grizzfazzle's Shield - Hoping to replace with the Draconic Deflector soon as another one drops in Lab</P> <P>Serrated Claw Medallion - My first fabled ever.. Will soon replace with Mark of Awakened Instinct</P> <P>Acrylia Hoop - If we ever get into DT, I want to Earcog...</P> <P>Dark Chitin Ring - Self explanitory</P> <P>Light Chitin Ring - I like having both, mostly the whole, Light-Dark thing...</P> <P>2x Acrylia Bangles - Againa, tell me if you find something better, really better...</P> <P>+13 sta and +11 str hex dolls... That reminds me, I still got a nimbus root laying around, make that +13 sta, + 14 str (need the slow on raids)</P> <P>And lastly, Cobalt Tablet - Decent tank oriented stats, some healt, and 60 vs all damage, including physical... better than FT4...</P> <P> </P> <P>So thats my gear in a nutshell. Also, on the trait choice things, i went with extra HP, only have 20 AAs, and am currently running down the STR line. Planning to get haste and hate gain to lvl 8, then gonna go do the STA line, though the plan is to get the critical hits and extra hp to master, as I truly dont have much use for the Aura, plus it bugs often.</P>

<hr size="2" width="100%"> <div>6,109 hp</div> <div>3,292 pwr</div> <div>4,178 AC <hr size="2" width="100%">This is not a bad start. IIRC when I first tanked a raid this tier (probably labs) I had 800 more health than you and about the same mitigation. Of course we weren't beating most of the zone the first time in. My gear is far from uber, so far from tier 7 I have 5049 mitigation and 7400 health (or 4800 mit and 7800 health if I swap some stuff). Alot of it is quested/ instance dropped: Cuirass of Protection, Dragonscale Earring and Belt, Class Hat, aviak bracelet w/ mtigation from the collection quest, dark and light chitin rings, Grizzlefazzle's Shield, sothis' boots. I would religiously do the following unless you can get some t7 fabled first: claymore quests, Halls of Fate for sothis boots), Den for chitin rings, class hat quest and Grizzlefazzle. Stamina is great and I have the STA AA line at 8-4-4-8, however when selecting gear always go for raw health as when you are raid buffed your STA will pass cap whereas the raw health keeps on adding in. We are a part time raiding guild, not very hardcore, we shoot for 6200 mitigation and 12k health minimum before temporary buffs on the MT. It would prolly be a good idea to hook up with your MT group and see what you can get buffed- this might highlight some deficiencies or assuage some concerns in different areas. </div> <div></div>

Ok so finally made 70 the other night so I thought I would share what I'm sitting at now. (19 AAs btw) All this is self buffed no potions food or drink up and in defensive stance. HP: 7065 Power: 3649 Attack: 1094 Mitigation 4084 (52.6%, 53% vs crushing 52% vs slashing and Piercing) Avoidance 46.7% (Resolute faith up though not sure if it is doing anything since I'm not grouped with anyone) STR: 337 AGI: 163 (Ouch really need to work on that I think) STA: 357 INT: 23 WIS: 303 (only have 2 points in WIS line so far others are in STA line) Cold: 3928 Disease: 2047 Divine: 3979 Heat: 2286 Magic: 5395 Mental: 2069 Posion: 2847 Here is the list of my gear. Keep in mind I have basically a full set of resist jewlery so I can buff up my resists as needed. Hoo'Loh's Knightly Helm Cuirass of the Djinn (really need to get a Cuirass of protection) Awakened Scalelord Pauldrons (Amazingly these were better than my wish forged in both mit and HP) Firebrand Armbraces Gem Encrusted Gauntlets Sacred Prismatic Legplates Pristine Forged Xegonite Vanguard Sabatons (Really wish Sothis would have dropped the nice boots he has last night) T5 rare STA Hex doll T6 rare STA Hex doll Shimmering Trueblade Scimitar (I know crap but have not been able to get a better 1 handers for HP and overall stats) Grizzlefazzle's Shield Pristine Fashioned Cobalt Tablet (really wish they had not removed the Mit from the T7 tablet that was one of the nice things about the cobalt one oh wait can't have mit on an item a guard can't use) Ash root cord (yes crap again but have not found better yet) Gem Encrusted Bracelet of the Sun (really kinda thinking this was a waste of raid points when I got it but it is still ok for now) Pristine Fashioned Acrylia Bangle (Another waste but decent HP until I can get better) Dark Chitin Ring Light Chitin Ring (Want to get a second light to swap with the dark when I need to boost Mit as high as I can) Pristine Fashioned Acrylia Hoop (Another nice HP till I can get better) Acid Flecked Necklace (This was a nice find Late Sat night I was just trying to get my level and well decided to stick out the vault a little bit afterwards to kill a few named mobs and this dropped.) Ok so I have almost a full set of Resist jewlery and Sunderguard for resists as well as a few other items. I have a complete second set of gear which was my raid tanking gear from the start of T6 so it is not bad. I also carry Prismatic 1, Amulet of the sword of ro, Ring of fate, Draconic Grimore, and Shining Greaves of the Arisen for FT if I need it (though normally I just change out my weapon if I need more power) So while I have 0 FT normally I can get to FT23 if I really need to. I have Caiman soup and some quest reward drink that gives 10 STA (really need to get some new drink) I carry 376HP potion and 240 Mit potion. On a raid fully buffed I can get just about 12K HP, 4800ish Mit, and almost 5200 Power The one thing I will say is that it is interesting how my magic resist is so much higher than any of the others and I would like to point out it is just how Guards can over come their short fall on not having a magic resist buff so it is made up in most gear worth having as a tank has magic resist on it so even a guard does not have to do much to cap Magic resist. <div></div>
