View Full Version : Holding Agro

<DIV>Ok, I've read enough of the posts here, and there's never a lack of uber people saying they have no trouble holding agro, and now here I am saying I have trouble holding agro.  So pls skip the demeaning I'm such a noob, unskilled, don't know my class etc that is out there whenever people say those that's can't hold agro are...I can bash myself enough thanks <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Ok, I'm not a noob to MMORPGs, but I am a noob to tanking, as I usually have always played the part of someone who did /g on me! on me!</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I trio with a Bezerker often, and usually I'm MT because of the fact I take less dmg, have even tried the other way around using my supporting buffs, but he still takes more healing than I do.  However, holding agro from him has become really difficult lately, and he is not using taunt and no AE.  Now to my embarrassment I have a very difficult time keeping agro from him on a single mob.  (hides head in shame)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Also the Mystic (my husband) I group with at times gets agro, though he's very good at casting well to lessen agro, but if he does get it, it takes a heck of a lot to get a mob off of him.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So ok here's what I do:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Single Pull:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Pull with dd (though if they're close will pull with taunt)</DIV> <DIV>Taunt if I haven't already </DIV> <DIV>Stun with shield</DIV> <DIV>Spam special attacks </DIV> <DIV>When taunt comes up hit them with it again</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Multi Pull:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Pull with dd (though if close pull with AE taunt)</DIV> <DIV>Ae Taunt if haven't already</DIV> <DIV>Stun with shield</DIV> <DIV>spam special attacks</DIV> <DIV>go to next mob use single taunt</DIV> <DIV>go to next mob hit with a special</DIV> <DIV>go back to original mob</DIV> <DIV>hit ae taunt as soon as it refreshes</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Am using smite prayer is only apprentice 1 now, but wouldn't that be more effective than Shout?  And I don't quite understand what's up with Blinding Light.  I have that in App 1 should I use it instead?  Inflame is adept 1</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I've even tried just staying with 1 mob on multipulls since bezerker uses /assist and follows me from mob to mob when I single taunt but he or the healer will get agro.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Its disheartenening when I can't hold agro on a single from a bezerker.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So ok, let me have it how un uber I am and how unskilled, and all that, but toss in some advice in there if ya can pls?</DIV>

<DIV>i pull with our DD, and as the mob is coming i trigger my HO, so i not only do a lot of dammage, but also add an inflame for more aggro.  then i toss on a demonstration of faith, which combined with the HO, generates a huge ammount of aggro.  i can pretty much not even have to taunt for the rest of the fight.  on a multi-mob pull, i pull with DD, throw on demonstration of faith as they're coming in, and then do an AE taunt.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>from what i've seen, mobs will hate you a lot more if you do some dammage to them first before using an AE taunt.  so if the mobs aren't too terribly difficult, i will sometimes run into their spawn, hit a cry of conviction and run back to camp and follow up with a demonstration of faith/ae taunt combo for pretty much guaranteed aggro.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>the only times i lose aggro usually is if someone is attacking a different mob, or if a fighter class is using their HO (which requires a taunt), or if i fizzle on demonstration of faith at the beginning of the fight.  if the healer generates too much aggro, i find that throwing a demonstration of faith on them is better than using taunts for getting aggro back.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>so when all said, i'd say our aggro building abilities in order from best to worst are demonstration of faith, inflame, taunt/AE taunt, and shielded advance..then everything else.</DIV>

<DIV>I tend to be MT in most groups I'm in, because most groups I'm in include at least one person that knows me, and I'm pretty good at it.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I tend to pull with the shield attack believe it or not.  Run up, slam em, and then back up to group.  This is the same as pulling with taunt, but the stun lasts long enough for me to get in a taunt while I'm backing up to the group.  Then I hit Demo of Faith when they're getting to me, and they're stuck on me pretty good.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>With a group of mobs, I pull with Cry of Conviction.  It is true that  AoE taunt works better if you hit them first.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>As a little point, you don't have to be going up against a group to use the AoE taunt.  ALWAYS use it, even on single pulls as a second taunt button, because if you hit someone with your shield, Taunt, AoE taunt, and Demo of Faith, they're your friend for life now.  I've never had someone steal aggro from me.</DIV>

<DIV>In addition to what spells you may use (including what the other two posters have said), make sure you have updated armor/weapons.  If you're making no aggro from damage, taunts and such will only go so far ... basically, use your damage to keep up with aggro, and use your spell abilities to get ahead.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Also, make sure to taunt before anyone else hits the mob(s) ... that's usually problematic with mages because they like to AE DD as soon as mobs get into their range.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I've found out that I do just about the same thing as you guys are, and the only time I ever lose aggro is if someone does not assist.  But that's their fault, not mine. :smileywink:</DIV>

And the beauty of this game is that I don't do like anyone who has posted yet, and have not had any problems losing aggro. I hope this helps!Question: Do you put Redemption on your main healer? I do, and it seems to help. Pulling singles: At level 24 I am pulling 24-27 level mobs, usually with 2 up arrows. - I make sure Divine Inspiration is up.- I pull with Righteous Anger- When I get to group I hit Demo of Faith, then Inflame, then Unyielding Stance. - When Inflame lights I hit it, every single time. In a good group you can get in a rhythm where it is going off as part of the HO.- Depending on the healer's power, and my own, I use Demo of Faith and our 200ish point heal to help the healer a) keep up to the healing and b) build aggro. Heals and wards generate aggro, so use them when appropriate. Pulling multiples:- I make sure Divine Inspiration is up. - I pull with Righteous Anger targetting healers / casters first. - When I get to the group I hit Demo of Faith, Shout, Inflame, then Unyielding Stance. - When Shout lights I hit it again. I do not use the "Paladin" AE taunts ever. - I hit Inflame when it lights, and every time it lights. - Depending on the healer's power, and my own, I use Demo of Faith and our 200ish point heal to help the healer a) keep up to the healing and b) build aggro. Just my method, and I'm sure there are better, but mine is proven to work, at least to level 24.

<DIV>I always throw Redemption on the target that is most likely to pull agro away from me too as a little addition, I spam charge along with what you guys are using and make sure that I have inflame ready for the next mob in line when the previous one dies. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Keeping agro off of the other group members is as much there responsibility as yours. Some peeps try to hit them with there hardest attacks right away. (Not a good idea) They should only turn up the heat when absolutely necessary and the healer should use there "buffs" to keep the big heals to a minimum, and watch who is using debuffs too cuz they create hate towards them.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Logar</DIV> <DIV>Lvl 25 Paladine</DIV> <DIV>Deffender of the Faith</DIV>

<DIV>ok i am more of a power conservative i dont like spending to much power on hos and such dmg abilities unless i know my group members wast alot of power and regen slowly so then i burn my power because i have nothing better to do. Cry of conviction is a power burner for one <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV>second i group with a wizard we are both at lvl 24 and he has fire ball at adept 3, it means he can do over 400 points of dmg somtimes on a single mob but i never had a problem with him pulling agro from me or had any complains from the healers, so i think i am a good taunter <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>ok here is what i do i pull with DD somtimes and taunt somtimes when i get the mob close to me i use Charge (if you didnt notice charge is a good knock down hit wich generate good agro) btw true demonstration of Faith gets you nice agro but it takes alot of power i prefer to keep that power for blessed aid, Divin Insperation is a must, it actully works i have it at adept 1 and i notice the diffrance in holding agro with it. then i keep hiting inflame then charge through a few hos for fun and repeat. this is for single</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Now for multi here what i do, i buff devin inspiration then give myself Demonstration of Faith before pulling so i dont get hit too hard and drop hp fast, i hit it with dd and while runing to my group i cast blinding light, btw you can cast blinding light while runing and you dont have to face the mobs while doing it, when i reach my group i hit the mob with charge ( as you can see i love charge) hit a few hos taunt somtimes with inflame when my ae taunt pops i use it. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>btw have your spells at app3 at least it helps a great deal. if you have any more questions i am glade to help my charecter name is Nomras i am in Mistmoor server.</DIV>

12-06-2004, 11:58 PM
<DIV>Aye, everyone has their own method. Personally i pull with DD or taunt depending on the situation/location. I turn on attack and hit DoF so i can cast thru. I then use single/AoE taunt. If no CC i will use AoE dmg spells then Divine Inspiration. In most cases i will not lose agro unless someone decides to solo a mob. If one mob does go after the healer i use Rescue, Unyielding Advance and cast thru with DoF, that is usually enough to get the mob back on me, whilst always using Blinding Light.</DIV>

I only ever lose aggro when a Healer over heals. So I lean over and tell my wife don't heal me so much then its all better. Being a new Pally, I don't have all the spells you have but I use Intervene on Robe Casters, I always use Toughness and Demo of Faith when I pull. Actually Use Cry and AE tuant to pull. Then Taunt and Ward when ever I can from there on out in the fight.

12-07-2004, 12:56 AM
<DIV>Its also good to notice if it is always one person pulling the aggro off of you, a scout/caster ect... if they are just ask them to back down a slight bit if a wizard is chain nuking chances are they are going to pull the mob off of you no matter how hard you push your taunt/dd/heal ect... not everyone knows how to play  online type games and that could be a problem.  </DIV>

<DIV>Question on divine Inspiration.  The description of it is a group offense buff + hate transfer to pally.  Does the hate transfer happen only right when you cast the spell and transfers a chunk of it or does it happen throughout the buff duration as people get hate?<BR></DIV>

<DIV>Thank you for all the replies!  I tested a few of the suggestions out last night, and here are my subsequent pontifications and concerns.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>First group I had no trouble holding agro.  Sometimes the monk would generate agro, but not anything that I couldn't pull back.  Using DoF was incredible for agro, so I'm thinking of it more as an additional taunt, rather than a ward.  I never really used it unless if it was necessary before because my Mystic husband always had me warded, and despite what some may think, I do not think the two wards stack, but rather are redundant in protection.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Ok, I do actually use charge, forgot to include it in my first post, but I love charge simply because it makes me giggle to see a mob fall on it's butt.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So everything is great, new advice helped, most helpful was using DoF as a taunt rather than a healing device.  Also not taunting until I got a few hits in.  DoF was great to hold agro at the beginning got in a few stuns and charges, then let off taunt and was rather pleased at how the mobs didn't lose focus on me.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>However, things fell apart again on holding agro, on second group when wizard was exchanged for the Bezerker friend we have.  Ok ya'll, have you actually grouped with a same lvl Bezerker?  This guy is Kerran, and duel wield and between the three of us scouring for equipment his weapons are mighty fine.  He didn't use taunt, no AE, and finally got to a point where he didn't use specials at the beginning, and still he generated agro within moments of the beginning of the fight.  I'm like spamming and asking for Breeze from the ench just to keep up with enough STUFF to do anything to do to try and maintain agro from him.  He gets agro and there's no getting it back, DoF everytime it's available, Inflame, Smite, Heal, stun, charge, everything in my bloody arsenal, and nothing gets agro from the guy doin nothing but fighting and no specials.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So at this point I'm feelin pretty inept, figure it's got to be something I'm doing, I mean I have a pretty good hammer, an excellent shield, decide to switch it out for a two handed to make more dmg, and still nothin doin, the guy is an agro magnet.  We switch out MT, I become supporting to another Pally friend, and he has the same problem.  We put REDEMPTION on the guy and still we can't pull agro from him.  Ench stopped putting haste on him a long time before that.  He automatically gets Divine Inspiration when we cast.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Only thing that seemed to work was Bezerker not fighting at all until the fight is well underway, I've got my agro generation thing done, got in a few hits, then he starts in.  He fights with no specials, when it comes to a point that the mob is down to the end of orange health I tell him to bring him to bring it down and then he lets lose and the mob is toast.  That seemed to be the only way to have the Bezerker work, otherwise he was a mana sink with the healing.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So has anyone had the same type of experience with an equal lvl duel wield Kerran Bezerker?  I'm tellin ya, I can pull agro from a monk, a wizard, and a healer, but there's like NOTHING I can do about the Bezerker!  I'm serious!  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Thanks again for the advice, with the exception of the Bezerker, was really solid and sound stuff to hold agro in normal situations, and makes me much more confident about MT.</DIV>

sorry I haven't read all the posts here but I skimmed most of them (I don't have a lot of time, at work hehe). But anyways, it's not you it's the berzerker. They are currently bugged. Blood Lust (the group attack buff) generates an insane amount of aggro. It's not supposed to generate any aggro. I was getting to the point where I would refuse to group with zerks. This zerk in the group kept getting aggro by "doing nothing" and I was about to lose my mind. Then I did a simple search on these boards, and in minutes found out that blood lust was bugged. So yeah, if any of you are in a group with a zerk, and they're not Main Tank. Tell them to not use blood lust or get kicked. It's that simple...

I am always MT in every group I'm in.. usually I'm the only tank, and the only time i have trouble holding agro is on multiple mob pulls where wizard or warlock starts in with AOE's real early in the fight.. even then i can get the mobs back fairly quickly.I once grouped with a bezerker 2 or 3 levels below me.. i was 27, he was 24 or 25.. I could not keep agro from him no matter what.. I'd pull 1 mob, use inflame, use blinding light, use the shield bash taunt (forget the name) and repeat as soon as any of them became useable again..he would get agro usually about 15 seconds into the fight and would never lose it no matter what i did..i asked him to stop doing any special attacks to see if i could figure out what the problem was..i looked up bezerker spell list to see if any of them were listed as taunting as wellhe said he stopped doing any special attacks but he still got agro.. i did notice him doing 1 thing and i asked him what it was, i believe it was "bezerk" where they self-haste.. i asked him not to do that and had 0 agro problemsi think the bezerker haste has an incredible amount of taunt... for this reason i believe bezerkers to be the best taunters in the gamei also think this amount of taunt is bugged.. a paladin 3 levels above a berzerker should be able to hold agro with inflame adept1 in my opinion..

<DIV>Noone mentioned the level of spells.. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I can only assume that having Adept 1 in your taunt package helps.  I have AE and Single taunts with Adept 1 (I think the AE is, I cant remember)  Anyway, once I got Adept in Taunt, any problems I had seemed to have disappeared.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>You can AE Taunt a single mob too, by the way.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I AE Taunt (defuff), then single taunt right after it, and pop Demnstration of faith, haul it back to the group..  I dont have a problem holding aggro from then on out.  I dont even have to taunt again thru the fight.  I dont use redemption.  Im level 25 pulling ^^ mobs with this method.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>AE Taunt</DIV> <DIV>Single Taunt</DIV> <DIV>DoF</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Works like a champ for me.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> -Law</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>OH THANK GOD I WASN'T GOING CRAZY!!!!!  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Thanks BiggerSmalls and Kraq22, I thought maybe it was just me, and BiggerSmalls you are right Bezerker Bloodlust is broken and tonight he didn't use it and all was as it should be.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So good words of advice, if you haven't grouped with a Bezerker with Bloodlust yet, and you get the opportunity to, then ask him to turn it off if he's not MT.</DIV>

<DIV>My usual group consists of me the paladin, a templar who thus far has consitantly been 3-4 levels higher than me, usualy a mage and scout type around my level, and one or two other players at times. What I do, and thus far have had no problems holding agro at all is this.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I equip my sword and shield, cast redemption on both the cleric, and the one other person I think is going to gain more agro. Usualy one of the scout types, or a zerker if we happen to pick one up. Cast blessed weapon on myself. I do not use knights stance since the templar has never had a problem keeping me alive, and having that extra redemption on the second person keeps the mob(s) hitting me.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>For single or group encounters, I always pull with my ranged DD, followed up by eather Inflame or Shout, depending on if it's a single or multi pull. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Once the group is engaged, I pretty much just use DoF everytime it's ready, and I might use my heal if it seems like the mobs are getting ahead of the healer. If the pull happened to be 3 or more mobs, I will sometimes use Shout again after the first one is dead, but it hasn't seemed to be necessary.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Just my 2cp</DIV><p>Message Edited by LordBane2000 on <span class=date_text>12-07-2004</span> <span class=time_text>12:05 PM</span>

<DIV>I keep things simple. I run out and DD the mob. Run back.. as I reach the group I start off with a shield bash (send me into attack mode so I dont have to do it manually), which ofcourse stuns the mob and also generates agro, and while the mob is stunned I cast either a taunt or inflame, depending on how I feel.. followed up with blinding light. There after, Charge comes in, which floors the mob, and while the mob is flailing around on the ground, I can cast my Demonstratoin of Faith on me undisturbed.. and after that I dont even bother doing any more taunting... a shield bash now and then works just fine. Never lose agro.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>As far as berserkers.. I don't bother to taunt anything, they are big boys, they are a fighter class, if they want the agro, they can have it! =)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

12-08-2004, 03:23 PM
At L25, its simply pull with Rigteous anger, once the mob has be targeted on his hate list and running in do a demonstration of faith by this time the mob(s) should be on top of you so AoE taunt, or Taunt to start getting the agro, if no mezzer around ill hit the other AoE styles while my taunts are recharging.Pretty much lay off the style damage, save power for taunting and demonstration of faith - works well for me, rarely have a mob loose focus on me.

<DIV>I am a lvl 32 Paladin in Kithicor.</DIV> <DIV>The only thing I can say is...I have no trouble holding agro EXCEPT with a zerker in group.  Single mob with 2 arrow up is not a problem, if u just keep using single and AE taunt.  However if u are in battle with 3 or 4 grouped solo mobs, it's nearly impossible to hold agro from non-trageted mobs.  I don't know if this is because zerkers have some sort of constant AE taunt or something like that.  Hate to admit it, but zerkers might be better choice as MT, if u have 1 in group.</DIV>

<DIV>Before I get to the meat of my post:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>To Reevah - Yay for pally/mystic couples (bf+me :smileyhappy: )</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Ok, now that that's over with.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Beyond Zerkers, I'd like to take a quick look at healers.  I grouped with one cleric, although he was a couple levels higher, he managed to steal agro from me all the time.  I'll be #$%(ed if I know what he was casting, especially as it wasn't seeming to really hurt the mob much or heal me. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  He might have been using his heal-when-hit spell, which would be silly with a pally who admits to warding all the time. <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>My biggest agro issue at the moment, which admittedly isn't very big, is a druid.  The only time I get agro dragged off of me these days is when he stacks regens on me in multi-mob fights.  As appreciated as the gesture is, it forces me to change targets and single target taunt mobs off of him.  So if you notice a druid getting a lot of agro, check how often he's casting Bloom, or if he's stacking it.  If its single target, its not a problem, and just like most everyone else, I only tend to lose agro other than that when someone targets a different mob than me.  Which is annoying as all get out.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I do have a macro to suggest for group work.  The emote can be moon, point, taunt, neener whatever you get the point.  And of course the text is flavor.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>/moon ; useability Inflame ; gsay %t stole my ale and [Removed for Content]!  Get %o!   (ie Gnoll stole my ale and [Removed for Content]!  Get him!)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Now *hopefully* this will make whoever if being blind and not assisting pay a little more attention to what you're fighting.  I also announce which mob I'm on before I pull a group, and I *always* start with a healer/caster.  Most people at some point will group with someone who just won't assist.  I give it a couple of chances, then that's it.  I spent too much time in Eq 1 dying with my squishy druid b/c some jerk couldn't assist and I had to heal them, I'm *so* not putting up with it here <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>If nothing else, I hope the macro helps <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  Out of all the heal spells I've seen, Bloom seems to be the worst for agro other than us casting DoF on ourselves.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>I have followed the developement of this game for almost 2 years. If all fighters can not hold aggro equally well then the archetype system has failed. That is my opinion on every question asked about tanking in a group. </DIV>
