View Full Version : Best race choice for SK

<DIV>Ive discovored something interesting for those SK who are interested in Main Tanking and not as concerned with off-tanking/dps.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Try a high agi/wis race like halfling or wood elves.</DIV> <DIV>Your spells will be more effective and you will resist spells often, your wards will last longer </DIV> <DIV>(ac doesnt affect the amount of dmg your ward takes but dodging attacks does.)</DIV> <DIV>You get a +5 bonus to str when u hit lvl 3 10 and 20. so i wont be to low.</DIV> <DIV>The end result is a nice balance between str sta agi and wis instead of a large amount of str/sta and low agi/wis like a troll or ogre. (notice I didnt say barbs they have a nice amount of agi and can work well also if you place points toward agi)  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Made a halfling SK and I love it <img src="/smilies/283a16da79f3aa23fe1025c96295f04f.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> hes a great with dmg mitigation and in a grp setting im not really to worried about dps, and with HO I am still able to dish out a decent amount of dmg when I solo. Only downside to this approach is a have a bit lower mana than most tanks but my high wis makes up for this somewhat.</DIV> <DIV>(wis also power pool stat but not sure what %)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Matter of preference of course bu for people who are indevicive about what race to choose I advise you to at least give it a try.                                                    </DIV>

race 100% does not matter. You will make up for any starting stats as you level and get gear to the point that every race will be the same. Any advantage you think you have will disapear eventually.

<DIV>Swampthing is right.  At early levels you might notice a big advantage or disadvantage due to your race, but once you've chosen a class and start getting decent gear, that goes right out the window.  Erudites make sucky fighters and average brawlers, but as monks they are just as good as any other race.</DIV>

<DIV>I thought that race didn't really matter until I had seen the strategy guide and it shows racial traits which really made me attracted to the ogre class with its hp bonuses, hp regen, extra str, extra sta, and added slashing dmg and so forth it is something to pay attention too for a tanking class. Of course It appealed to me because of I've gone  the tank  route and Ogres seem to be the only race that gets theadded bonus to slashing, and I do love swords <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />. Ogres get a lot of hp regen and added hp bonuses  than the other races when considering your tank class.Check out the strategy guides racial chapter  and you can see what all other races have going for them than just whats on the surface. Also Ogres get a bonus to both metal working and metal shaping skills, I want to make my own armor <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> and this whole set up suits me well. Ogres also get a buff that gives +5 defense to party members and a +5 int buff. The Ogre seems like its the tanking package. Fits my playstyle well.</DIV><p>Message Edited by DarthRevan on <span class=date_text>12-13-2004</span> <span class=time_text>06:32 AM</span>

Heck I just chose Human. Yeah all your armor will make up for the stats in the end. Besides its better to have fun with your character than to pick based on stats.

It really doesnt matter as far as I've seen. I'm very happy with my gnome shadowknight, and amazingly enough, my stats are pretty balanced out by 23 and I don't even have super stat jewelery or anything

I'm a ratonga SK and thus far, it's pretty much evened out. There are some minor differences, mostly in strength. Otherwise, aside from coming up to everyone's knees I'm the same as any other SK <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />Cept cuter..and fuzzier..With spots <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

<DIV>Well I remeber the devs saying how it will be much later in game that players will acquire items to even it out. I picked the Ogre because I like the ogre race the backstory is cool how the curse is somewhat lifted. The ogre racials really seem to be geared toward tanking.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Most important thing is to play what you like. But don't overlook things in the process.</DIV>

<DIV>Ok, so race doesnt matter in the long run.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>What about the short run?  I started as an ogre for an SK.  And from grouping with a wood elf crusader...I can tell ya my str does make a difference.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Later on in levels, sure...we may be equal...say around 25-30...but for now I have a distinct advantage...</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So, the real answer to the question, if your not looking for short term...pick the race you want...it'll be more fun....if you want to advance faster...pick the one with the best starting stats.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>As for me...I wanted an ogre...he's fun as hell to play =)</DIV>

One advantage of height... you get better visibility in a fight when you zoom out to 3rd person view. Especially if you're fighting from on top of your horse. To me, that's pretty important as a main tank or secondary tank.

<DIV>The short run?     Your Ogre might be strong and have more hitpoints, but the downside is that you get hit a lot more and miss a lot more because of your low Agility.   Also, your power pool and spell effectiveness are somewhat reduced, being tied with Trolls for having the lowest WIS. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I picked an Ogre for my shadowknight because I played an Ogre SK in EQ1, and I like the role play aspects and visual appearance of the Ogres.     I role play as a very big and dumb bouncer type, with a very large sword and a shiny bald head.   I like it. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV></FONT> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

One (extremely situational) reason to pick a large race (barbarian, ogre, troll).Down in the deeps of Edgewater Drains there is a stairway leading down into the water. It's a good pull spot to pull the mobs out of the water and onto the "dry" landing. As a troll, I could remain standing in chest-deep water and pull the mobs without having to swim back to the group. The dark elf in the group... well, she was in over her head.OTOH, there will probably be times where I can't get out of my own way as a large race.

<DIV>As a human, I have had no real issues in my quest to become the perfect Knight of Shadow. The lack of a specialized vision hurts a little in really dark areas, but I don't have too hard a time targeting (shorties have to use some creative means to target the mobs, especially when surrounded by a bunch of fatties, lemme tell ya!) and my stats seem to be in line with those of my brethren, regardless of race. I hold my own and don't much of a problem holding agro when I want it. I know how to keep from pulling it off the MT when I don't, while staying near the top of the hate list so I can peel the MoB off the casters when they get overzealous or the healer suddenly has to throw out a boatload of heals, or the scout make them turn around with a well placed pointy object in where the sun don't shine. I have been putting my racial traits into HP's and AC and Stamina, so that I could be a better tank, but those are my preferences and not everyone elses. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I have to say, race is solely a roleplay aspect of the character any more. Not that it's a bad thing, mind you, but it makes it so you don't see just one race as a certain class any more. BUT, then again, all you lesser races are living in Freeport now, city of the HUMANS, so which race is doing better over all? Mwuahahahahaha! :smileywink:</DIV>

Personally, nothing beats the feeling I get when I form up in a random group as the only tank, and someone without looking at our class/level stats says "OMG? Where's the tank?" and then they look at little gnome me with my 1877 HP and 1764 AC and then proceed to have an aneurism.

Well, i'd have to say imo, i like Dwarves the best. 'Like' mind you, not that they 'are' the best. It's true stats will balance out in the long run but think of it this way. Take a lvl 50 High Elf SK and a 50 Troll SK both wearing the same armor/gear, lets say for argument sake that its the best they can get currently. Seriously, who will have the most HP? (HP is the question at hand since SK's are a tanking class) The High Elf SK or the Troll? The race that started off with 30 Stam pool or the one that started off with a 15 stam pool? Here are some of the racial traits for the two races. Again a distinct advantage for one race over the other only for this class. In other words the High Elf would have a distinct advantage over the troll if the discussion was about a mage class.Troll-----------------------Bog Bully +3 STRBrutal Barshings Special crush damageGift of Innothule +5 Disease resistGrobb Grub Summon Food (No Rent)Maniacal Madness +3% PowerMender of the Mire Boosts Armorer skillsNatural Regeneration +2 STR, +2 STA, +3 Health RegenResilience +3 STASwamp Breath Able to last longer underwaterTroll Gourmet Boosts Provisioner skillsHigh Elf--------------------Apperception +3 INTElven Reflexes +3 AGIEsoteric Study Boost Scribe skillsFiriona’s Zeal Special divine damageGift of Tunare +3 WISGilding of Felwithe Boosts Jeweler skillsGraceful Movements +3 AvoidanceHarmonious Mind +2 WIS, +3 Power RegenStrength of the Koada’Dal +3% PowerTenet of Takish’Hiz +3 Magic resistI personally like the racial traits for Dwarves.Dwarf-------------------------------Brell’s Blessing +3% Health <-----------Butcherblock Body +2 STR, +3 Health Regen <----------Endurance +3 STA <-----------Fortitude of Kaladim +3 DefenseHearty Constitution +5 Disease resistMaster of the Trumpy Tonic Boosts Provisioner skillsSpell Shrug +3 Magic resistStormhammer Special divine damageSpell Shrug +3 Magic resistVital Provisions Summon Ale (No Rent)Weapon Forger Boosts Weaponsmith skillsYes with armor and gear the High Elfs HP's will raise but will always be inferior to a Troll's if we are doing an apples to apples comparision (Same gear all around). Sometimes it comes down to that near death when a group is faced with a mob or mobs that will waste the entire group if the tank dies. I'd go with the race that will always have a HP edge over most others, it can mean life or death more than once for the group. My 2cp*racial traits may not be 100% accurate depending on when allakhazam posted it. <DIV> <DIV>I went an ogre Sk an maxed my heigth, quite frankly it couldn't have gone better so far. There are those little ledges that freak me out because im so big and 1 wrong step and :smileysurprised: everyone has some XP debt. But when im in a room full of mobs and we are trying to pull specific ones. Sometimes they hide behind rocks an stuff, and my righteous anger cannot pull them. So i literally have to jump and in mid air i start to cast the spell which pulls them.... Even if 5 ratongas got on each others shoulders they still couldnt pull that off. Quicker pulls, more life, better view of the battle, looks like a REAL knight, and rides somthing better than a pony:smileyvery-happy:. Choose what you like i don't really care.... but while you boys ride on your little ponies i will be on my stallion:smileywink:. And as for we get hit more an etc. Well when im ina group i usually have a shaman and a cleric so it doesnt really matter if i get hit.. And we are mostly all SK's here right? Don't tell  me you never herd of DoF(Demonstration of Faith). I'm level 22 and that still helps me out so why complain about being hit?:smileytongue:</DIV></DIV>

The race that started off with 30 Stam pool or the one that started off with a 15 stam pool?On the other hand High elfs have better agility than Troll and therefore higher ac which means less damage.I'd say the whole thing will even out in the end.I'd really wish they'd kept that only Dark elfs could become shadowknights as it was in eq1 since they, from a roleplaying perspective, are the only ones evil enough to get that title.Sure Ogres eat things and Trolls smash everything that they see but in what way is that true evil?Dark Elf Shadowknight of Antonia Bayle

Am I the only one with a female, half elf SK? The raven black hair with the blood red highlights.... I look so deliciously evil it isn't funny. The comments I receive from random people all the time makes my choice worth it. Now, if only I didnt sit on my horse a foot in the air above it and that sitting didn't make a visit to an OBGYN look like a Sunday picnic.... I would be much happier then. Race really only matters in this game for looks and height to me.
