View Full Version : Problems soloing green heroics?

Most monks I've talked to at various levels say they have "no problem" soloing green triple arrow heroics. I've even met a 42 monk that said they could solo Varsoon "no problem". I'm 44 and I can't do it. Is this normal? Am I not supposed to be able to yet? I'm just wondering if it's just extremely hard or if I need improvement in the way I play, that's all.Depending on what they are, most green triple arrow heroics I can kill. It seems like a lot of luck is involved. Sometimes I get hit for 500+ multiple times in a row, and other attempts I don't get hit very often at all. Defensive stance and offensive stance don't seem to really have too much bearing when it comes to this. I have arranged my combat abilities multiple times trying to find some kind of key order to them, mostly trying to space out the two at my level that stun and interrupt casting. It seems to come down to a 50/50 chance when it comes to triple arrow green heroics. Sometimes I can stand and fight for over two minutes, other times they take my health down to red in 30 seconds. Just the downside of avoidance, I guess? If anyone has any tips, let me know. Thanks!

Use balanced stance, get atleast an adept 3 of "heal" make sure you use the root+mit buff and the rest is mainly gear dependant. Also make sure you are spaming your short duration proc as much as possible.

I am a level 54 monk and I can solo heroics (with no arrows) two levels below me. *on occassion* I can solo an even-con heroic group, although its a long and arduous process that involves feigning death many, many times. There are a few little tricks though:

use your abilities with a ten second recast time *before* you use your abilities with a 30 second recast time, and use them immediately again when their recast is up. If you use the other abilities first, you're wasting that recast timer.

make sure mend is up if you're trying to take down a difficult opponent

alternate your stun abilities with ones that just deal damage--that way, you aren't wasting your stuns by trying to stack two on top of eachother

pull with a fright imbued (strength) hex doll if you have one, and then cast your mitigation buff while the mob is running towards you (DON'T do this if it is a caster or an opponent with a lot of ranged attacks)

invest in Adept IIIs and Masters. They're worth it.

in addition to the above posts i would also add that there is a large percentage of luck involved when it comes to fighting things. since we use a lot of avoidance that's a chance that even at 80% avoidance we could get hit 100 times in a row. just like your feign death at 97% could fail 100 times in a row. it's unlikely but very possible. a lot of it just depends on your avoidance roll at the time. if you get a bad streak just fd, recharge and pop up and try it again until you can take them out

I consider myself a very good at soloing. My monk is level 60 and I've been able to solo just about every named ^^^ mob 9-10 levels below me. Occassionally I can solo named ^^^ mobs 7-8 levels below me, but that depends on the individual mobs. IE: Pure casters are always easier for me b/c with all of our interupts I can easly time them so that the mage only gets off a few spells. The best part about our class is that we can actually get to all those named easier then most classes (even those with invis). I can run through Sol's Eye (where everything see's through invis) pull aggro, FD, heal and keep going till I reach my victims while everyone else has to fight their way to them.

Gear has a lot to do with it. I used to solo Varsoon daily and get those guaranteed 2 masters, but I was never able to do it until level 44 (fiend is 34 Varsoon is 35 if I remember correctly) and that's with all masters or adept III's and legendary gear. Hard to believe he could be done at level 42, but kudo's if so.

Best advice is to learn your Combat Abilities well. Know what they do and when to use them. IE: With Varsoon, don't use your interupts until he starts casting. If I remember right he's got a few second cast time and can be interupted fairly easily. Also, grab a health regen potion or two. They are fairly cheap and you can use it before you use your self heal.

And like the other poster said, some of it is luck as well. I can kill the same mob 4-5 times in a row with little to no trouble, but the next time things just aren't timed right, I'm not resisting as much, etc. Once you get it down you'll be hitting Varsoon daily as well, then moving onto the next named. :smileyhappy: I've been given the title of "loot [Removed for Content]" in my guild b/c I've always been able to hit 5-6 instances in a day to get masters and loot, then run through to get all the named in zones as well. I love being a monk.

~Xordus~ 60 monk

Officer of "The Brotherhood" / EverGrobb

I have no problem soloing any names up to level 66. SoS is where I usually go to farm names (since there are a lot of them there) but of course some names are just tough and can't be soloed. I find that in 1 or 2 attempts you can pretty much get a clean pull and stun/stifle lock them through your first set of CA's then drop tsunami and wait for 2nd set to come up and stun/stifle lock them again. If you invest your AA's into the Int line and get Eagle Shriek you can Crit almost all of your CA's and auto attacks while having a nice boost to your mitigation when your in the red. I find that if my ca's are almost up and I am almost under 30% hp I will wait to take some more damage then drop all my ca's then cast my heal. That gives you around 2k extra damage and when you get in red. Right before your about to die Eagle Shriek will kick in again and after using it twice while soloing you will add around 3-6k more damage against a named than usual. You will also live a lot longer with 1,500 more mitigation. The key is to time it right and learn to use your CA's at the right time to control the mob. Another tip is to use your Fear after your 2nd set of CA's, but only use it if there are no social mobs around or if you can fear him into a wall. If the named has 2 adds with them then just kill an add FD them off pull kill the 2nd add FD them off then take the named on.

Message Edited by artophwar on 07-26-2006 07:15 AM
