View Full Version : How to compare 2H and DW?

Do you just add up the damage ratings of the two weapons and compare them to the damage rating of the 2H to get a comparison? The reason I ask, is that at the broker, at level 20, there are many DW items that are each 10.4, 11.5, 12.5, etc, but there aren't any 2H that even hit 20, let alone 25, so its not even a close decision on 2H vs. DW.Is this not a valid comparison? Does the rating of 2H change at higher levels?

Of course, stats factor in as well too.. most of the time you'll get more status from 2 weapons than just 1.

In general just add the DR together to compare DPS potential.

However, 2handers while doing less DPS do have advantages when fighting mobs with damage shields, reactives, and whatnot. There's a few SK named mobs for example where I'll use a lower damage rating 2-hander vs 2 high damage DWs.

Regards,

Croaker

Thanks for the response, so if it is a simple matter of adding and comparing, I am curious why, at least at 20, in the broker there are literaly pages and pages of monk DW weapons that add up to 20-25 total, and maybe 1 monk 2H that is even 20.8. The difference in choice is literaly pages vs 1 item. At least in 3-4 days of checking this has been the case.Does the avaiability of comprabale 2H change at higher levels, is level 20 some kind of abberation or is this just the way the game is itemized to give DW an edge?

It's not as simple as adding the damage ratings ... there is about a 10-20% variance between the types. It's really something like: 2H dr = (2 x DW dr * .85)

Originally, it was a straight match - but the mechanics of the game proved that a 2H with the same damage rating as 2 DWs would actually do more damage, so the DW damage ratings were universally increased - which is where the ~15% variance came in to play.

A handy way to compare weapons that you actually have is to equip them and type /weaponstat. This command will tell you the base ratings of the weapon(s) and then tell you the ratings with haste, dps mod, and strength (and whatever other buffs directly affect them) factored in.

Actually the base damage listed in /weaponstats is including DPS mods. Just checked with my Bruiser (easier since I can just turn on a buff to see it change).

The damage listed after is the base damage modified by your Strength score (hmm.. maybe we can find out how much you lose per point away from your cap through testing... i'll have to give that a try).

The delay shown is based on any haste you have as well (doesn't show base delay).

<STRIKE>Hmm.. what you list is Aged Branch, which has a base delay of 2.5s.</STRIKE>

<STRIKE>Your without Everburning is showing a delay of 1.6. That would indicate that you are already at 72% haste. (100% would be 1.25, or 1.3 in the abbreviated display).</STRIKE>

<STRIKE>When you added Everburning, you went from 72% haste to 88% haste (1.4s). You only added 16% more haste using Everburning.</STRIKE>

<STRIKE>When you added the belt, you were at 100% haste, and thus down to (1.3s).</STRIKE>

<STRIKE>With just the belt, you went back down to 80% haste (only 8% increase over the 72%?).</STRIKE>

No longer relevant since previous post was erased.

I just logged in to test some of this out myself (haven't really tested haste effects on the listed delay much, since I'm a bruiser and have only 1 item haste to work with).

Noticed that despite being lvl 70, all my buffs (including from items) were listed like when I was mentored when I was last on... had to recast and re-equip stuff to get the full benefits back.

When I tested my own /weaponstats... it seemed like I was getting more haste out of the 15% from the belt. It was doing more like 25% haste, between my unarmed and throwing belt. Unless haste is being calculated somehow differently, it shouldn't be giving as much as it is for that belt. My persona is showing only 15% as well, however the listed delay on /weaponstats shows ~25% (since it rounds to only 1 decimal).

I would have to go do a detailed "log parse, count swings" to figure out the exact difference it's doing, to see if /weaponstats is actually just a display bug, or if there's some sort of bug with haste atm.

Not really inclined to try that with only 15% haste difference atm. Would be kinda boring, heh.

Message Edited by Raidi Sovin'faile on 07-27-2006 05:37 PM

I learned a log time ago not to ask these types of questins. You get so many answers that it's impossible to know which is correct. One person says to simply add the two up and compare and the other has a formula that only NASA can figure out. With that in mind two weapons going fast seems better than one weapon going slow. I think it's pretty clear I'm not working at NASA.

Silke

lvl 51 Monk

Message Edited by krc333 on 07-28-2006 03:11 PM
