Well as for missing plate I never have.  Only played my sk to like 34 or something but I played a zerker to 51.  Monks just a jack of all trades with outstanding survivability.  FD and Invis make life alot easier.  Also for a xp tank you can still dish out good dps.  Shrug I love my monk my best advice is try it out and if you do not like it.  It's really not time wasted cuz its just a alt.
