View Full Version : Provoking Defense Change

<DIV>When I first saw in the patch notes that Provoking Defense (and all similar fighter spells) had its root changed to a snare I thought... big deal, even sprinting isn't enough to get away anymore so I may as well be rooted if I can't win.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Boy was I wrong about that.  Just being able to slowly reposition myself during a big fight now allows me to avoid adds that would have been inevitable before.  In fact, it was these certain adds that kept me from using provoking defense because it would end up costing more damage due to adds.  This subtle change has had a huge impact on my ability to tank and manage aggro.  While using provoking defense I have not had a problem holding aggro even with DD's going full throttle.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>This is the first time in a while that I look at a change that was made to a combat art and feel that it was brilliant and well designed.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Thank you for this change!</DIV>

<P>Another nice thing is it allows you to reposition yourself when you get "Cannot see target" messages due to mobs that run into the walls. </P> <P>Ideally of course SOE would fix the pathing so that the mobs can't "phase" through walls (don't think gobby's are supposed to do that) but I'll take the change as a positive thing.</P>

<P>Its also like the perfect speed to resposition too, slow enough so agro is kept nice.  </P> <P> </P> <P>Im pretty sure this was changed because people were using it for mobs that fear, kept you from running, but love the change either way.</P>

i like it too, it's like wow i have to actually get used to not being rooted now.  it's still very very slow but at least we don't have to toggle the spell off every time we need to move just one little inch to get a mob out of the wall or like when you get thrown back and you immediately lose aggro because of the distance. <div></div>

actually the root came in hadny several times for me, notably in bastion finishing gebs when you dont wanna get knocked back into the lava...annoying when you dont need it tho<div></div>

I don't recall the root ever effecting knock back. You just stay rooted in your new knock-backed spot

I've been launched while in Taunting Defense by knockbacks. And like the above poster says, you get knockbacked, but you are rooted in your new spot.

..............the old version with root still left you vunerable to knockback.....................what sucked about getting knocked back was after you got knocked back you were still rooted and had to toggle. thank you sony for making this a snare............i love it so far <div></div>

none of the mobs in bof have knockback anyway.  they never did.  maybe he means having himself rooted so he doesn't accidentally tap one of his movement keys while he's standing in the lava.  but yeah the root never prevented you from being knocked back anyway.  it only helped with being feared. <div></div>

<DIV>Couple points:</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Agree, could always get knocked back, you would just stay rooted where ever you landed.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The big difference is fear, you get a nasty named, or epics that cast fear, its nice to be rooted, as THAT would keep you from running away.  BUT, its still slow enough that you usually dont run out and get more adds, or get too far away.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The thing I dont understand, is that as you upgrade, you get slower and slower.  i recently went from adept3 to master 1, and noticed this.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>my only real complaint however is that sometimes i forget its on, and think i'm crouching or something... i'm trying to figure out why i'm so slow, then... Dahhh.... Click.....</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>-Erick</DIV>

If you fail to engage quick enough, the mobs in BoF will summon pets.  The pets have knockback.
