Sony's response is Every tank class has it's strengths for different situations. People tend to choose guardians for raids.

My main character is a 60 defiler, and in my experience I would rather have a guardian than any other class in group situations. Others can be effective as well, but they lose some defensive abilities for increased damage or other utilities. My preference after that would be Berserker or Paladin.

The AA's make solo'ing with a Guardian much easier.

To the OP, it really depends on what you want to do.

Raid MT - You are better off with a guardian. The other classes can be raid tanks, it's just that guardians seem to be the easier tank to support.

Non-Raid MT - Pretty much any fighter class. I've been off-tank to all the other fighter classes and the groups have had no problems.

Solo - You probably want a Monk, Bruiser or Beserker if you plan on solo'ing a lot.

I guess, in the end, play what you like.

Best tank.. ho hum... can open... worms... alll over.Seriously though if you play a healer you just want a GOOD tank... not the best a GOOD one. whichever tank you decide on in the end read all of your skills very carefully when you get them and continaully upgrade.I've seen a paladin fall to peices in the MT slot and have a lower level bruiser step up and have no problems with agro or taking damage. Each tank has a huge sets of skills and abilities but it is the application of these skils that make the tank not the name of the sub class.

All Fighters, Warriors and Brawlers can Tank. Each has skill sets to make them the best tank in the majority of situations. Every tank will have a mob or section of the game where they will stumble and a different class of Tank will cake walk through.

But Saying that there is one thing that makes a Tank Excel and that is the driver behind the toon. Even the shortcomings of a Class can be overcome by a person who knows his class and plays it well. When you find that person you know you have a Good Tank that will get your through even the toughest mobs alive.

As long as it's a Fighter class, (any of the tanks)Then the person behind the keyboard is the biggest factor to the ability of the avatar.

Message Edited by Kuleon on 06-13-2006 06:45 AM

I am a level 61 SK on Nagafen. I have grouped with Guardians and Zerkers before. IMO the best tank in the game was/is the Guardian. I have rolled in groups before and the Guard is 2-3 times better the tank than myself. Just my opinion.

It all comes down to flavor and what you like ...

solo: brawlers rule this department with ease. No discussion about it...

any tank can tank heroics but:

guards/pally's (with amends on the right class) and mainly zerkers have it easier with more then one target. Brawlers can do it but it's way harder for them and it requires a lot of skill...

single target: brawlers rock here. they will not loose aggro easily on a single target. Any tank should be able to keep aggro from a single target though.

epics: guardians and zerkers hands down rule in this departement. They both have good aggro and the best mitigation of all the tanks. A guardian has a small advantage here for being a bit more defensive. A zerker relies more on dealing dps to keep his aggro. On short fights the aggro of a zerker will be better and very long fights the aggro of a guardian will be way bigger...

dps:

aoe: zerker is by far king in this department. nobody can touch them when it comes to aoe dps
single target: brawlers > zerker > sk > guardian and pally

utility:

zerkers and guardians are very straightforward. The only thing a guardian can do is tank, that's it, he's the meathshield. A zerker can tank and if needed he also can take up a dps-spot. For the rest they don't have much utility...

crusaders: sk's and pally's are true hybrids. they are very good in buffing other tanks and they can act as healer or as tank.

brawlers: a brawler has nice utility as well. They have a heal, they can FD, ...

EtherealCorpse wrote:
Is it the guardian? I have no idea what one to pick

Lemme start by stating my primary is a healer... and holy crap are there are alot of lousy tanks out there... guardians, zerks, pally, sk, monks, bruisers... you name it. Tanks live and die by their skills and equipment... healers *loathe* bad tanks... a bad tank is a tank with out of date gear or out of date spells / spells that haven't been upgraded. They suck suck suck. I play a warden, you know what makes me cry? When I examine the group tank and *I* have more mitigation AND avoidance. I'm in leather for gods sakes, what are you wearing? Your fricking class armor from level 20 at 70? I've seen wizzies and scouts who can't manage agro, i've seen healers who basically just af the group while I do all the work, and ot be honest, i'd take a group of non-agro managing morons before I'd take a single tank who has crap [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] gear 20 levels out of date. You have one job in a group, one job only, YOU ARE A METAL COATED MEAT SHIELD. End of story. You need to be able to do two things... 1) Take a beating and keep begging for more. 2) Make the mobs angry enough at you to keep beating you instead of me, the wizard who can't control his overburns, and the [Removed for Content] scout who didn't bother to agro transfer to you... instead they do it to the healer. That being said... no matter what you do -- Just keep yer gear and arts top notch and everyone will be happier. If you're talking raiding, guardian. If you're talking soloing, try a monk or bruiser. If you're talking grouping.... it doesn't matter a lick.

EtherealCorpse, Its been my experience, and I don’t think there will be too much disagreement here, that being the best of anything in this game (whether its perception or fact) ends up getting wacked by sony. Guardians tend to be slightly more defensive and less offensive then the other plate tanks and they have little else to offer outside of being the meatshield. But like all plate tanks good gear and skill (group/mob/zone situation awareness) can make one plate class better then the other. If you like to group and you want to be the main tank you get some defensive advantage with the guardian. But you lose offensive capabilities for the small defensive advantage. Plate tanks are slow to level and boring to play if you like to solo. I hadn’t rolled an avoidance tank to try it out because of the taint left by certain trolling monks and bruisers on these forums. Because of them I never will. But that being said, monks walk on water since they are the favorite of certain developers. If you want a high DPS class that can tank when need be you might want to consider a brawler class. If you don’t care about frills and want to be the best defensive tank class for your group go with a guardian.
