What is protection and what does it do? Is it listed somewhere how much protection i have? It doesnt seem to tie into my mitigation , and im wondering if the more protection a shield has the more % to block you get from it. Anyone know for sure?

Raises block % = more avoidance
I had posted this in the berserker forums a while ago, but I'm sure it has some interest here too.
There does appear to be a problem with the reported Protection values. They're not accurate, or even indicative of which shield provides a higher block rate. The Crimson Rock Targe (Protection: 1114, Block: 12.3%) provides a lesser block rate than the Diaphanous Bulwark of Bylze (Protection: 1058, Block: 13.3%) which in turn provides a lesser block rate than a pristine imbued xegonite kite shield (Protection: 1005, Block: 13.6%). You basically can't tell if a shield is better without first equipping it at the moment, and even then, it might be some kind of display bug.
Scale of Cyenadros (Protection: 1126, Block: 15.3%) /boggle. It seems to be fallout from the base block rate on kite shields being changed.

This is from the update notes for LU21 - Kite shields at all levels now provide the same chance to block as tower shields (12%). - Round shields of all levels now provide a consistent chance to block (8%). Any amount over 12% is probably from other avoidance boosts that the shield has such as agility, defense, or parry If your parry and defense are around 350 it seems that you get between .15% and .20% per point but even then you're right Uux, the avoidance change doesn't seem to make perfect sense.

Message Edited by Kriil on 04-29-2006 11:45 PM

Agility and the defense skill increase Base, while the parry skill increases Parry. Block is only modified by a shield and it's Protection value. Any other stat boost on the shield will only effect the others. To further my example above, the pristine imbued xegonite tower shield has the same block rate as the pristine imbued xegonite kite shield, 13.6%. It also has the same Protection value, 1005. The tower shield has +23 agi though, and also modifies the Base but not the Block rate, it remains the same. In the example I provided above, more Protection meant a lesser displayed Block rate, which just doesn't seem right at all.
