View Full Version : Guard and PVP
<div> Hey guys silly question,</div><div>I was wondering if any of u had a chance to pvp with your guard yet, and if so how are you holding up. I was wondering because my guild has like 12 sks and no guards. so I was thinking of switching over. so maybe some of u can give me some feed back about the differences between the two in pvp and over all tanking. Yes i know this is a super noob question so plz don't flame me out lol. I would really like some good feed back here so i can decide on making a gnome guard lol or sticking with my Barb Sk.</div><div> The reason for the Gnome btw is i think it would be better for pvp so i can see more and get around easier. I messed around a little with a ogre guard and they are just to dam big and cumbersome.</div><div> anyways ty for your posts in advance and good luck out there on the pvp fields.</div>

<div>Guardians are good at Main Tanking Raids, if we can manage to hold aggro. For anything else (soloing, experience groups, PvP) you want another class. Since you asked about PvP specifically - our DPS is awful, we have 0 utility, no invis, no evac, no lifetaps or heals. Our biggest damage skill does around 1k damage, SK's Harm Touch blows that away. So if you want to have the lowest damage output of any fighter class with 0 utility then Guardian is the class for you! <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> But hey, PvP servers need raid tanks too, just don't expect to be useful in a fight. </div><div> </div><div>vs. mages? They root, we die. If we're lucky we might do a few hundred damage from autoattack on our bow.</div><div> </div><div>vs. scouts? Snare/kite us, or just go toe to toe, stun/backstab and whatnot, our DPS is too low to compete here. </div><div> </div><div>vs. other fighters? Lowest damage output and the only fighter class without some sort of heal or in combat health regen. That's an easy one to figure out</div><div> </div><div>vs. priests? They debuff/nuke/heal themselves and win. </div><div> </div><div>You might be able to win a few guardian vs. guardian duels but that's about it. </div><div> </div><div>- Rorrak</div>

<div></div><div>To play devil's advocate in group vs group PvP we could have a role as having a lot of HPs and encounter taunting everyone to attack the guardian - we do get two encounter taunts which I believe is unique (Protect and Goading Assault), plus inflaming defense could keep them focused on us if they decide to actually move in and attack. So if you don't mind just taunting and taking hits in a group PvP setting you could be useful, personally I'd still pick a class that had more utility in the way of fear/stuns/silence/heals/lifetaps.</div><div> </div><div>- Rorrak</div><p>Message Edited by Rorrak on <span class="date_text">02-23-2006</span><span class="time_text">10:07 AM</span></p>

Its not like its a mob that is going to be [Removed for Content] off and look at you, its a person that thinks and says, kill the mage and healer then we all pound the crap out of the guardian later?

<div></div>I would hope that tuants would auto re-target the enemy to you, forcing them to tab or click target the original, which in that time you may be able to soak up a CA/spell or 2..... Hopfully in the long run of balancing PvP they will reduce the cost of tuants by 1/2 or so for PvP, otherwise won't be very usful.
Gaurds rock in group pvp don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Grab a healer or two, and the rest dps and go own other groups.<div></div>

17 Guard on Venekor here. Was in a group last night that had two players ganked by an assassin 8 level higher than them. They were dead before I could hit the taunt, and then he would run away with me and the others chasing. Got him down to red both times before my sprint wore off. Frustrating but an incredible adrenaline rush.Later a yellow to me Bruiser tried to take us out while engaged with some trash in Antonica. Saw him coming in 3rd person view and targeted him immediately and taunted/hold the fort. He didn't move from that spot the rest of the fight, and was on me like flies on stink. I parsed out my damage on him which was maybe 8-10 DPS but didn't land any attacks on my group mates other than AoE the rest of the fight. All the while our monk and swashbuckler ripped him to shreds and the Mystic kept me above 50% health the whole time. Fun, fun, fun.The game was getting stale before I started this toon this last Saturday. Not anymore.

So in PvP its taunt for the win. Do other classes get taunts they can use while stifled?<p>Message Edited by Belce on <span class="date_text">03-01-2006</span><span class="time_text">03:00 PM</span></p>

I know the monk does. Sure all other tanks do as well.

<div></div>In group pvp the tansk dps really doesnt matter as much because thier dps does not equal agro. Taunts own for locking players to you. That keeps players from targeting weaker group memebers such as your healer and killign them. Not to mention guards have alot of protection skills that shine a ton in PvP. Truly in any dou or greater setup guards are by far the best PvP tank, But solo pvp other fighters are better.

<div></div>Playing a 33 Qeynos guardian on Nagafen right now, planning on MTing for a raid guild there but I've done my share of pvp. I am also 2nd place on the serverwide guardian pvp ladder.Solo we are usually not too great. While we can soak up more damage than most we just don't have the dps to drop most classes. If we get more than one person on us its usually over, unless they are all well under your level. Mages actually aren't too difficult if you learn to time your shield stun and kick interrupt skills. You can do the same thing with priests, but I usually don't have enough power and dps to finish them off. I've never been able to take a bruiser in an even fight, SKs are tough, and berserkers seem to be fairly even, give or take. I haven't had any solo pvp experience against scouts as they seem to always jump me with a group if I am alone. It is in group pvp that we can really shine. I run with a guild group most of the time and we are usually able to take other groups that have a couple levels on us overall. Taunts work wonders in group pvp and can really confuse the hell out of others. Also, using 1 MA can allow the guardian to keep everyone else in the opposing group locked down with the AoE ability that roots and lowers dps of everyone. If the guardian is taunting properly he will be getting hit and his root will drop, and if the rest of the group is MAing properly only 1 of the other group will not be rooted. A well coordinated group with a guardian can decimiate another group using this ability and taunts effectively.Another effective method I've found in group pvp is to group with 1-2 other taunting classes and bounce the other team with taunts. Alternating taunts so that the other group is constantly on changing targets usually means they aren't getting off as many CAs and hits on your group as you are on them. If you can alternate taunts with an encounter taunt ability, it can work very well.Overall I am pleased with my guardian in pvp. I didn't play him to solo so I dont have those concerns, and he does very well in group pvp thus far. However, I would definitely not recommend the class in pvp if you tend to solo or want more of a "glory" class that pushes out the dps like crazy.<div></div>
