As many of you know, I was hired to be the community manager for EverQuest II back in August of 2003. It was a great time to come onto the team, as the foundation of a great game was already established. For the next year or so I got to watch as the pieces came together and formed the core of what EverQuest II is today.

<xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" >

The role of community manager is not one that is clearly defined in this industry. At some companies, the community manager is a part of the PR department, charged with helping to market the game. At others, it is seen as a means to insulate the developers from player reaction. Fortunately for me, my first boss, John Blakely, had a very different opinion of what my role should be. From the very beginning, he made sure I was thrown directly into the mix, participating in the development of the game and advocating the players' perspective. Once I had proven to people on the team that I wasn't completely crazy (though I would never deny at least partial insanity), they got used to hearing my opinions and feedback on a regular basis, and came to realize that I wanted the same thing they did: to make the game better. I consider myself very fortunate to have developed this relationship with my fellow team members, and that wouldn't have been possible without the patience and support of every name listed in the credits of EQ2.

My personal opinion is that the most important function of a community manager is to act as an advocate for the players. This doesn't just mean passing along their opinions and suggestions; it means proactively looking out for their interests in relation to what's best for the game. As designers and coders and artists make changes and add new features, it's important for the community manager to be involved and represent the interests of those who will be experiencing those changes in game. It has been my privilege to have that role for nearly two years now, and I consider myself very fortunate to have been given the opportunity.

Another great benefit has been the people I've met as a result of this job. I've gotten to know some terrific fansite people, folks just as dedicated to building a strong community as I am. But maybe the best part has been interacting with the players themselves, both on the message boards and in person at events like FanFaire. In my opinion EQ2 has the greatest players of any game out there, and I'll never be able to thank you all enough for the support you have shown to the game, both before and since launch. I've had the honor of representing EQ2 all around the country and in places like <xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" >France and China. This is simply a great job anyone would be lucky to have.

Over the course of my time here, I've also become more and more involved in the design aspects of the game. In many ways this came about as a natural extension of the fact that I'm constantly interacting with designers and pestering them to explain how the game works and how we can make it better. This interaction gradually made me realize that I wanted to take a more direct hand in the ongoing development of EverQuest II.

So I guess this is my long-winded way of letting you know that I am moving out of the community manager role and becoming a full-time game designer. It was not a decision I made lightly, but I look forward to facing new challenges and contributing to the game from a different perspective.

I wouldn't be making this transition if I wasn't confident that I could leave the community in good hands. Ryan Shwayder, a.k.a. Blackguard, has been a huge asset to the community team since he moved over from our quality assurance department last year. He shares the same dedication to improving the game that I do, and will act as a strong advocate on behalf of all the players. With the aid of Faarwolf and the support of Scott Hartsman and Alan Crosby, he's going to do a fantastic job as the new EverQuest II community manager. Please join me in congratulating Ryan as he takes on this new responsibility.

But I don't want all of you to think you're getting rid of me so easily. Like Hartsman, I'm far too entrenched in the online community to simply fade into the background. I'll continue to post as I always have about game issues, and I'll continue being an advocate for the interests of all our players. Plus I'll still be attending events like E3 and FanFaire, where I'll continue participating in panels and discussions. And I'll still do my occasional "it's not a blog" column to hopefully keep you entertained. In other words, I'm not going anywhere.

Thanks again for all the fun over the last two years. It's been an incredible ride, and I look forward to seeing where the future takes us.

Thanks, Moorgard. You've done a great job representing both the community and development team, and I hope to do well following in your footsteps. I've had the amazing opportunity to be a part of this community since its inception, first while running EQII.com, and now as EverQuest II Community Manager. I fell in love with the game the first time I saw it at E3 in 2002, and decided then and there that I wanted to be part of the team. It wasn't until Las Vegas FanFaire 2004 that I made the fateful decision to move out to San Diego from Colorado to be part of the Quality Assurance team. After beta started, I worked as a moderator on the beta forums, transitioning to the Community Relations team shortly before release. Watching this community and game grow has been like a dream come true for me. I've been playing video games my entire life and massively multiplayer games since The Realm Online in '97. I love the genre and couldn't be happier than I am now as I take on a new role at Sony Online Entertainment on my favorite MMORPG, EverQuest II. This community is an absolute blast to be part of. I look forward to interacting with and meeting more of you at events like FanFaire and E3, and will do my best to represent you as your Community Manager. Thank you all for being such a great community.

A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to both of of you. I enjoy reading your thoughts and comments about EQ2 on a daily basis and look forward to more of it in the future. As a leader in another MMORPG (UO Stratics' Managing Editor), I have to say that the professionalism that both Moorgard and Blackguard have shown to the EQ2 community has been an amazing thing to watch and be a part of over the last year that I've personally been involved in the game, and I'm glad to see both of you remaining so dedicated to the game's success

*CHEERS*

Just a quick line to say good luck in your new post Moorgard! I am relatively new to EQ2 having only come over from WoW a little over a month or so ago.And the main reason I did make the move to begin with was reading the many posts of Moorgard over the last few months. Having put up with what I consider poor PR work and a lack of communication from Blizzards people,I was blown away with all the feedback that I would read from the devs here, especially Moorgard.I really felt he loved the game and had as much interest in making it the best it could be as any of the most die hard fans had. I am really enjoying EQ2 and plan to be playing it for a long time,so thanks again Moorgard/Steve. And welcome Blackguard! You have some big shoes to fill, but I'm sure you will do a great job.

Reading the title I thought that you were leaving EQ2. Having you promoted to game designer can only mean great things to come. Like many people I have always enjoyed reading your insights since the days of mobhunter. Moorgard has a great command on the use of language. I think this will be great to see in the future quests.

Moorgard first off on behalf of the casts of thousands that wait for your input daily thank you for an excellent job. Blackie, look forward to your A game in the weeks to come.

There are questions that folks are dying to know....

1. How far in the forums does a CM go? Do you actually read the specific server boards? Case in point there are 3 or 4 posts about bots on the BB server with screen captures that have gone for the most part unnoticed.

2. What is the best way to get your attention? Do you have a keyword that you look for? We that play and troll these forums have many suggestions and not that we expect you to act on all of them nor even respond to many of them it would be nice to have a method of catching your eye if we have a problem. Case in point, broken quests such as Lord Gydak in SH for the Stormfire bow it went almost a month uncompletable causing the price of the bow to skyrocket.

3. What is the best method of getting suggestions to developers. I see Dev Tracker but it does not allow for new messages, perhaps a dedicated forum for Feedback or something along those lines that the Dev's could get into and see if there are ideas that might be cool to implement.

Okay lots of other stuff, but welcome to the new cubicle, if you need any help just ask us :smileyhappy:

Moor, enjoy the endless nights associated with game design..

First, grats to both on the promotions! If you are still reading this thread I would like to tell you a little tidbit. I started playing EQ2 in beta but had interacted with you in a particular web site's forums regarding the "crafted is better than loot" conversation. I appreciated your candor and attitude then and still do. I left EQ2 in Jan of this year to play WOW. I have since left WOW to come back to EQ2. The Number 1 reason I came back was not changes to the game or a fix I wanted, It was the job the community team does here. The frequency of post and the constant effort to keep the players informed gave me reason to beleive you all *really* cared and the game was only going to get better! I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy this new assignment.... BTW could you design some new pets for SK's? (sorry had to ask) ~

First off, I used to post under a different station account so my post count and registration date doesn't reflect how long I have followed this community. Still, I am not one who posted that regularly even before. I do read quite a bit though. As one that has followed EQ2 since slightly after you came in as community manager, through beta, release, and now a bit after release, I can honestly say that I think you have done a better job as a community manager than any other I have observed in the many other MMORPG's I have played. You have communicated well, interacted with the community, and stayed away from many of the mistakes that other community managers in other games have made. Good luck to you and to Blackguard in your new roles.
Message Edited by theraven on 07-06-2005 08:00 PM

Grats to you Moorgard. I'm sad to see you go as community manager, but I'm happy its because you'll be working directly to make the game better. Your insight and brutal honestly on many issues was refreshing and always made me think we're in good hands.

And grats to you Blackguard. You seem to be truly responsive and to care about the game and that's all we could ask in a Community Manager.

First off, Big Congrats to you both and the whole team.

I don't know about anyone else but I love the forums in general. There is allways something to look at if you can't play for some reason to brush up on the upcoming changes etc. I would play test to be more involved if my guild was there.. Everyone that tests gets a thumbs up from my point of view. I hope your new role as full time game designer suits you Moorgard, which I'm sure it will since you must have thought about it an awful lot.

Blackguard, good luck in your filling of MG's shoes!! He had really big ones didn't he? And now..even more so,since no one who has been so involved cannot quite relequinish all previous duties ^_^ You might have to convice him to let you do some things, I reccomend being slighty evil in that respect. haha. Teasing is fun after all..

Message Edited by Azureblaze on 07-06-2005 11:07 PM

Obviously you couldn't talk too much about upcoming content but as overview of how it all works would be good.

Mirdo.

Moorgard wrote:

As many of you know, I was hired to be the community manager for EverQuest II back in August of 2003. It was a great time to come onto the team, as the foundation of a great game was already established. For the next year or so I got to watch as the pieces came together and formed the core of what EverQuest II is today.

I've had the honor of representing EQ2 all around the country and in places like France and China.

Congratulations! From writer to web designer / developer to PR at Sony to EQ2 game developer. You're still a VAK. I love your writing as well and am glad to see that it is not going anywhere. Specifically, the Urinal and the Stall. I got a few giggles out of that. The only place I can find those articles now though are through http://www.webarchive.org.

Message Edited by Pipple on 07-07-2005 09:47 AM

Gratz to both. I'm sorry to see you stop doing what you were doing though, Moorgard. Your posts were one of my favorite things about this particular board and EQ2. Your voice was one of intelligence, measure, understanding, and even real life experience I could relate to (I liked the posts about Buffy, science fiction, and my cat went through something similar to Max recently, but lived). And I can't think of a post you wrote that wasn't right on, off the top of my head. It made me think that if EQ2 put smart, *real* people in charge of the customer service side of things, they might have others elsewhere as well. Like someone else said, I experienced quite the contrary when I played World of Warcraft, and it has to be at least one of the reasons I'm not playing it much and am playing eq2 a lot now, having picked eq2 up in march. Anyway, not to take anything away from Blackguard. I'm sure he'll make the job his own and do it well.

Message Edited by ranma503 on 07-07-2005 07:53 AM

Good luck Moorgard. You did well as community relations manager. It seems strange what qualifies one to be a community relations manager for a large MMORPG. Perhaps. Dare I....... Okay... I will.. There was or is a community relations manager of another large MMORPG who used to volunteer for SOE as a guide in EQ1. Let me tell you that this person is a truly gifted writer and knows how to communicate well. I suppose that is one of the requirements for being a great community relations manager. Well, she made one teensy weensy little mistake during her guiding career. She was a GREAT guide by the way.. One of the best EverQuest ever had, but due to one little indiscression she was booted. I am going to post a link to her page that will make my point here about what it takes to be a great community relations manager for a large MMORPG. She will probably hate me for this, but heck, the link is still up so she can't be too mad. By the way.... On the one hand, congrats. Its always good to see a member of the comunity make it big. On the other hand I am dissapointed. Your 'vision' of quit your small guild- join a uber guild to get the best loot is anethma to me. I guess that the eq2 community will have DoN type exp packs that only the uber-raid guilds will be able to enjoy. Content that large protions of the player base will never be able to see, will the rest content is continually made harder becuase of the uber-elites, driving the ner players away.... just like in eq1. *shrug* to bad.

Again to all who have said kind things, thanks a lot (and to those who have said unkind things, ). While my post count may suffer for a little bit as I settle in to my new position (and take on the many responsibilities that Moorgard held), I'll work hard to live up to the expectations created by Moorgard. This will probably be my last post in this thread, but I still appreciate the kind words I've received here, in PMs, and email. Thanks.
