View Full Version : freeport jewel box (work in progress image intense)

i've been working on my jeweler's house for forever, and it's still a long way from finished. i was almost finished two years ago, or whenever it was, when we got the new rooms and outdoor patio things (which i am not complaining about, i like them) and the new geometry broke all my layouts. =/ i've got about half the rooms back up (the entry foyer, drawing room, dining room, breakfast room, and music room) but many are still disassembled (the kitchen, library, gardens, and my quarters and shop.) and some bits, like the seance room are at some intermediate stage. i have a million seams and edges yet to fine tune, and there are all sorts of things missing from quotidian type details, like dishes, to structural elements, like the base decoration on the second foyer pillar. also, the floors and painting placements aren't final yet. so, it's gonna be a while before i will publish this.

and i don't post screens too often, especially of unfinished work. because it makesd me very uncomfortable. but today i really wanted to some, because of the kerfluffle over the building blocks. which i also plan to boycott with the others. because, really? PFFFFTTTT who needs them? my house does have a good number of player crafted rares, and some rares from events in which i've participated. but mostly it's made from the most common things, and not even from very high tiers. amusingly, the very rarest items in the house, like the 'once sold by NPC' 'antique' royal antonican chairs in the dining room, appear to be the most common craftables. probably, only a dedicated collector would wander around IDing them all. but do not be decieved by appearances!!! there are currently exactly four SC items in the house (five if you count the freebie cheesse cart,) all in the dining room. and i'm seriously considering swapping them out if i can find suitable substitutes, or construct them without incuring the wrath of the item count gods.

so, forthwith, here are a few screens of Tsumaranai's freeport home. she's probably the oldest jeweler on AB, maybe the wealthiest too, so her home is meant to be like a little jewel box. even tho it won't be published for ages people are welcome to come visit. tho i experiment a lot, so i can't guarantee you won't get stuck in the geometry if i don't expect vistiors and don't tidy up. the home is located at:1 compassion road, NFP, AB

edited for typo fail, and again for html image fail.

<a this is very elegant... took me while to work out where it was... its beautiful well done xx

Beautiful as these images are, they don't do justice to the actual house as they don't convey quite the same sense of space and elegance as the house itself does. I urge people to go and have a look for themselves! So many clever little touches and ideas and resulting in a very ornate and extravagant abode.

WOW! The is opulent and well named. I am in awe of your details and use of space. Well done!

Kudos,

Cloudrat

As I said many times before I just love your house. I think it might be the only house in-game that goes for a baroque style. Though I wouldn't mind being wrong about it as it is a very interesting style.

Dunno if I said it before but what I love the most is there is so much details on your house that every time I visit there is some new detail I didn't notice before. Heck, even the ones I did notice before are always a feast to the eyes.

A jewel box is indeed a fitting name for your house.

I have to agree with everyone here. This is a truly stunning house! It really reminds me of the old Victorian houses with all the old antiques in it. A treasure around every corner. All cluttered with little gems everywhere.. Beautiful!

Breathtaking, terrific work!

Ooooh I must come for a visit to take in all of the details! It all looks amazing. Love the trim work, openings done with the chair backings, the railings from the bench backs, the doorways... everything!

Beautiful pairing of colors and I agree with everyone on elegance. My favorite is your sitting/dining room area Coming for a visit

I am speechless. This totally feels like a Mansion for the uber elite in Norrath! The use of materials is astounding. I have to see this in person! By the way thank you Tsumaranai for all the backbacks last night, I have enough for like 5 more toons! Can I get into Freeport without being clubbed by the guards since I'm Qeynos alinged? I haven't tried yet.

WOW! you all have made me feel awesome. it makes all the screaming and crying and grinding and shaking my little blue fist at the broker, and at the layout editor, and at the drunken gnomes who built the old freeport homes, feel worhwhile.

i guess i should say maybe a little more about the genesis and theme of this house, since people seem to have picked up on it. which is also awesome.

when i started decorating this stronghold, maybe five years ago? i don't even know. D= the only idea i had in mind was that it should be expensive, even to the point of being a bit overdecorated and tacky. my reasoning was that if people were going to come to the house to beat the broker fee and then still dropping 20p on some bracelet or whatever, they deserved to see where their money went. they should get a whole show!

the mirrored atrium/breakfast room and the music room are not very different from how they were in the very earliest versions. tho i have cleaned them up and embellished them since the introduction of layouts. which ZOMG i luff layouts so much!!! which, you could probably tell.

kalef - baroque is a good word for it. and one of my first ideas was that it should be like an old manor house inhabited by endless generations of decadent, indolent tier'dal gentry. is decaying gentility a style? if it isn't it should be. and btw, you know i steal some of my best ideas from you. like that blue marble in the dining room. which i did not care for at all when it was introduced, thought it was ugly and garish and plastic looking. until i saw it used, and lit, properly in your home and fell in love with it. actually i steal good ideas from everyone. everyone. >_>

so, back to the house... so i started studying pictures of the grand old homes of europe, everything from german castles to italian villas. and i stole some good ideas there too, but ultimately they didn't really have the right feeling. so i started studying pictures of the homes of wealthy american industrialists and robber barons of the gilded age. one thing that's interesting about a lot of their homes is, they weren't built from scratch. but rather, were built from bits and pieces of older structures they bought, some would say pillaged, from europe. so here's a 500 year old ceiling from a spanish monastary, and a here's a 700 year old floor from a greek villa and here's a chandelier from a french chateau and whatever other treasures one could grab all mashed together in one new overblown place like san simeon. so that's the sort of thing i'm attempting. a house which is itself baroque, even tho the style isn't consistently so throughout.

also, once i refined and narrowed the idea from generalized gilded age residence to jewel box for a jeweler, i tried to make sure each room or distinct space had both a color theme and a design motif. so, for example the mirrors in the dining room echo the shape of the arched doorways, and everything in the breakfast room has a golden circle in a square (chair backs, rug design, sun god painting tiles.)

and some aspects of the house are norrath specific and/or RP related. like, i made Tsu's personal quarters and shop in the basement in memory of neriak. *sob* before it was reopened. xD and there are a lot of smaller details of this sort too, like the bootstrutter maps of freeport and qeynos harbors in the drawing room are correctly placed geographically, and the bookcases directly below them correspond to the cities depicted in the maps. and now that you know for sure what a huge ginormous dork i really am...

thank you all again, everyone who commented. and such nice comments too. i like it when people enjoy things i make.

I really love the FP house, I think it has such an interesting layout and I really love that you've completely transformed it! I agree with you about the drunken gnomes though, ugh, they were not fans of perfect angles! I'm also a HUGE fan of this being so minimally SC. As a 90 carp I just can't buy SC furniture, just doesn't sit well with me, and I'd rather explore, quest, and craft my decorating items. I hope people will see what you've done here and be inspired to do the same!

thank you. thank everyone. like, if i forgot to in my overexcitement.

roslyn: for all that i complain about them, i really love the freeport homes a lot. they are full of interesting spaces. but they are a genuine challenge, at times quite frustrating, to skin the way i'm trying to do. but i really want to do it. am compelled to. cover every surface, till it is nearly unrecognizable. but yet, is also recognizably the same space.

i only have one rule for decorating: don't fight with the architecture. study it, make friends with it, take it out for coffee, or cocktails... but don't fight with it. and i follow that rule whether i am decorating a house or creating a place in one, like i did for wayward's garden contest thing. and i love that old freeport architecture, love those spaces. they have personality, and are at a livable scale.

and about items and carpenters and sc oh my... i actually have an 80+ carpenter, the one every decorator makes eventually for those 3 AM emergencies where you are right in the middle of the most perfect creative flow building that staircase and how dare there not be enough shelves on the broker. >.< but i still buy, and often commission, the bulk of my crafted rares from actual full-time carpenter characters who i've bought from and worked with for years now. i've got my jewelry business, i don't need to ninja theirs.

personally i have a lot of mixed feelings about the whole sc/building blocks fail. i've been a carfter, not only on norrath, for nearly 15 years now. so things which negatively impact the crafter community (or positively impact it, when that happens. oh lawdy i crack myself up sometimes. xD) really resonate with me. and i've been gravely disappointed by changes in MMOs more times than i can count, so i'm hoping not to reexperience that here. and i don't want to diss all the lovely new items we have been given the last few years. cuz i truly love them, and have incorporated many of them into my designs. but part of the fun for me, in building things ingame, is the challenge of having a very limited item vocabulary. which doesn't mean i don't want shiny new things. i can *ooooooooo! shiny!!!* with the best of them. but we really don't need a lot more shiny new things (tho i would still love to see carps get new recipes, but not for jewelry *glares*) er, anyway, we don't need a lot of shiny new things to construct and/or decorate some really amazing places. i see it on these forums, and touring around the leaderboards, and visiting friends homes, every single day.
