The new expansion has been out for weeks and in all my reading of elite mercs so far I have read of only one person finding a supposed elite merc. With thousands of players and more then 10 servers out there to play on only 1 has been reported found? This tells me to waste time camping them is just that a waste of time, if thousands of players that play across more then one server, and play 24 hours a day can not find one. The handfull of you out there trying to camp them are wasting your time.I am not an elite merc camper but I read the frustration of those that like to acquire rare items in MMO's. So my message is more to them, it seems based on what the dev's have said that they designed Elite Mercs to be like a rare coin someone just stumbles across in a field. Very few people will ever find one and even less will ever own one. Camping them is going to lead you to frustration and a hatred of the game. We know that

They can not be camped the dev's have told you this. This could mean that they will not spawn if someone is near their spawn location or in zone for that fact.

They do not spawn like normal mobs: This could mean they spawn across different zones at different times they do not spawn in the same location 2 times in a row

A dark forest: I see folks banging their heads that they have spent days even hours in Nek looking for a merc. They do this because they read a clue that said "a dark forest" the clue did not say The dark forest it said A dark forest, for all you know it could mean any forest in game at night, that would pretty much cover every zone in game and it is a useless clue. I would not spend all my game time running around Nek it will make you bitter and cause you to hate the game and get frustrated.

All of that being said, I find Merc's pretty useless once you get to level 90 and are raid geared, their DPS is crap with higher level mobs and I suspect the elite mercs are no better. Their heals can not keep up with those that have better gear and tank harder mobs. To me mercs are more for filling an empty group spot with "Something" that is better than nothing, If I was going into ToF's for example and could not find a healer there is no way I would take a healer merc instead I and my group would die on most x2 encounters or even the harder mobs like Tserrina's Rage or Tserrina Syl'Tor I am not even sure a merc could handle a group in just Heroic ToF's (If I am wrong forgive me)About the only use I have found for a merc is

A. PLing a toon from 1 - 85 and getting new players hooked on the game instead of standing around frustrated they cant find a group. After level 85 a generic toon with generic found gear would have a tough time using a merc in DoV or some SoF zones depending on the zones and mob encounters.

B. Crafters with crappy gear out harvesting can use the spare heal when they aggro a mob while harvesting.

Rather than obsessing on elite mercs my feeling is we should suggest to the dev's they should up the heal ability of standard mercs so that they could better handle folks with better gear and tougher mobs.

I know a friend who has an elite merc. It's a brigand, so if there are only 2 in game for now as the GM has said, that means there is no healer merc in game. From what I can tell, they don't spawn in the same zone every time, and wonder then depop to a different spawnpoint in a different zone, if not just depoping all together. As for the rareness of the spawns, I feel that they have way overdid it. Being so rare, it's worse than the spawncamping stormfeather days of EQ1 for the EPoP. At least then if you sat around long enough (sometimes days due to skipping) you would at least have a fruit of your labor. This type of extremely rare spawn plus spawning across all zones.I would much rather have the mobs be slightly more common than the extreme rarity that they have now. They are so rare most people either don't know they exist, or don't even believe they do. For a game based more on the casual side than hardcore raiding, I see the elite merc thing as being more Elistest than Casual for the gameplay. My 2 solutions are...

Make them spawn more. I could care less about people using them for duoing harder mobs. No amount of AI will replace any good player at a raid. Most DoV heroic zones I can solo through, or are just used as "Rare check" zones anyway, killing 1 boss and seeing if the rare spawned then leaving.

The other option is create a few not so elite but stronger than normal mercs that are not so rare spawns or quest line rewards so people can do some work and get a stronger merc. Or add questlines to upgrade the already existing mercs, maybe Merc Only equipment that increases the merc's stats?

As it is, it's way beyond broken.

I like something that is ultra-rare and very difficult to obtain. I hope they don't make it easier to obtain.

The problem isn't it isn't difficult. Having things be "right place right time" based entirely on luck is not something that seems balancing or anywhere near difficult. Being rare for the sake of being rare only makes something worthless.

I posted the DPS from Matri in the other thread. She can hold her own against most players but I find she needs quite a bit of skill to use properly. Paying 3 plat each time she dies means you tend to be quite careful about how she is used as a tool.

As an example in Pools I will put her on passive and not have her fight anything in the Gerg Teae (Worm) fight. Instead she gets to be on vine duty. Anyone who gets webbed to the wall has her rush in and break free.

In Spires (First Boss - the ice comet lady) I put her away. She will be guaranteed to die if she is left out for that one fight.

Trust me... they are expensive to run. Very expensive. Once you own one your hands are tied. You can't get a cheaper model without abondoning her, if you keep her then she will cost you 3p every death/time you take her out.

Evanair wrote:

I could care less

Which means you actually do care.

Please do not entertain this silliness devs. The regular mercs are already more than powerful enough.

They are called elite mercs for a reason and with time as knowledge of where one was found spreads the locations/areas where they pop they will be found increasingly faster. 1 month they have been in-game even if they have not been discoed on every server that would not be a bad thing. Far too often you cave to the entitlement mentality don't do it here let something that the people that have it now actually mean something for a reasonable period of time.

No I do not have an elite merc, nor do i know anyone that does.

In EverQuest 1, they did Merc Progression when they released them. You had to go through progression to go from Tier 1 of your merc to Tier 5 (which is the best merc you can find in-game at the moment). I can't understand why they didn't go this route instead. At least there's a chance of something better if you work hard enough to get it.

Couple things, The dev's didnt say there was a limit of 2 in game.. they said there were only 2 Elite Merc types..at present..One thing I loved about my Merc in SWTOR you can send them to harvest for you and to sell off your junk in your backpacks.. I LOVE those features.... they come back after 45 seconds and sell all your crap stuff and then u automatically get the plat... and the harvests take anywhere from 2 to 5 mins depending on the item to harvest but then they come back and you have a reward / harvest.

From what it says on EQ2i the billy doll is a healer, and the naga is a caster. One of my guildmates spotted the rare naga in SF but instead of grabbing it right away with the toon he was leveling he tried logging in one of his 90s and getting there.

It despawned before he got to it.

At low levels the mercs are great. If you stick to SF content merc are still great. About the time crit mit becomes an issue it becomes apparent that mercs don't have crit mit and die really easily because of it. Mercs arn't useless at 90, just unreliable. A few of us were able to 3 man some DoV zones by pulling out mercs when we felt the extra damage and curing boost was needed. We perty much figured it was going to be 25g gone every time we summoned them, but it was worth the cost for the extra umph.

The Brig merc I am refering to is NOT the one located in freeport. I really don't think the freeport one has 70k+ hp and does 40-60k dps. Becides, I know he did not get it in freeport.

I picked her up at the Nexus in Stonebrunt Highlands.

For the price of elite mercs, they should just keep them a static spawn. It's a nice plat sink, let more people sink more plat into them. How would that be a bad thing?

Regular Mercs are already OP from 1-89, might as well let people have easy access to even more OP ones... as long as they're paying more for it.

uh hardly op. Don't even expect the brigand merc to tank for you in places such as The Trembling Lagoon, where a simple green 38x2 he will cower at, leaving you to do all the work, and die, whereas if he had been doing his part, you wouldn't have died.

I think it's cool to have some uber rare items in the game.
