I'll use guild wars as my example. I know in guild wars I can hire as many as I want and they take coin and xp away from you. OK fine not much of an issue.

Here how do they work? I saw that to hire one I would of needed 300 gold just to hire him and then I would need to give him 30 gold while out. So what happens? your out 300 initialy, then to maintain it you have to "feed" it gold? Don't think it would work out too great if you are a casual type guy that maybe just needed a tank or healer to come with for a bit or you wanted to do a quick run and you knew you only needed a meat shield for a bit.

Do they just up and leave if they don't get the gold requirements?

if you have them out, they auto get the gold. If you have him in your backpack unsummoned, they take no gold until you use them. And you can only have 1 merc out.

The price also scales - lvl 90's can readily afford 30 gold... My lvl 22 only costs a few silver.
