View Full Version : LP4 and Linux

For the most part, I tend to log into EQ2 quite a lot from my Linux workstation. In order to do this I've had to run with the old Station Launcher in order to run properly due to incompatibilities with new features in the Steaming or Full launchers (LP3?). Given the look (maybe flash or html5) and features mentioned so far (fast downloads via either background services or differential files), I'm really concerned that this will no longer allow me to play EQ2 under Linux.

I know the probable answer, but was this even tested in Linux? Yes, SOE does not offically support Linux, but has not locked Linux users out of the game. There is a moderator-stickied thread of users supporting other users getting EQ2 to run under Linux, which implies that while SOE does not support Linux it does however condone it. This forced move to LP4 will likely lock out those of use playing under Linux and force us to look for a new game to play.

Please consider other operating systems with this new mandatory launcher.

Thanks,Dedith <Ardent Regression> - Crushbone

It's definitely not flash, that's the whole point of the new launchpad, I would be surprised if it's HTML5 as it's an incomplete standard.

Not sure what that leaves... Javascript/Java I guess.

I've seen a few random comments which suggest the new launcher doesn't actually close when the game starts, so perhaps the launcher is also the background patcher.

In which case as long as you can run that to patch, you can then run the EverQuest2.exe file to start the game proper.

Would be interested to hear what the outcome is as I sometimes dabble with Linux systems myself but never really got EQ2 working as well as on my Win7 desktop.

As far as that type of functionality is concerned you would be best served asking the LP developers directly. They have their own forum here, http://forums.station.sony.com/stat...?category_id=56

Using WebKit rather than IE/Flash/Windows files... so might actually be more compatible with Linux

I get get it to run and all, it's just the 'maintaining it' without any support at all that's an issue.

But I'd at least like to thank the devs for not working against Linux either.

Has sony ever considered the potential gaming market with a retail game like EQ2 actually being supported for Linux though? You'd instantly be the 'news' all across the Linux/Wine forums for doing that.

When it does run until Linux it runs very well. I had it running with Wine just fine, then I updated Wine - big mistake.. I tried for a day to get it going good again, but couldn't. I mean, I know eventually I'll get it going, but... meh... time's limited.

The issue right now is that the Technical Support department has no part in that decision making process. You would be best served presenting these concerns on a general discussion forum where an actual developer, or producer, would be able to see it.

It just might be a good 'out of the box' type of move for Sony. I suspect that worldwide, they are many Linux users who would be quite interested.

Mostly to 'management' those questions tend to get ignored because they are not quantifable, but I suppose that might be because no one's tried it, hehe.

Being a linux user and part of the community myself, just purely out of curiosity, you do believe theres a market there? I wouldn't personally think so. Just for discussion sake

What version of Wine would you suggest?

And I have tried Winetricks, of course. I think it was 1.2.3 that worked out 'out of the box' almost for me. Then I updated...
I'm working out bugs with it now.. but the launcher is actually attempting to go into eq2, just that is now crashing. Once I get a good setup running I'll post a how-to.

I know there is a linux gaming community but I couldn't tell you how large it is. You could check some of the linux game sites to see how many users they have? I've tried both Regnum Online and Ryzom MMO's for linux and neither are as good as EQII. You can be assured that you'd get more users than they do.

I personally am going to give it a bit to see if someone can make the new launcher work. If they can't I'm going to have to cancel my subscription as I'm not going to redo my entire system for 1 game. Keeping fingers crossed.

Icoer/Alex
