View Full Version : Housing Scavenger Hunt: What I learned, Feedback, and Results

Adventurers,

It is unfortunate that the remedy for Jazamin did not work. Well, I suppose it did work in a sense. The effect of the cure is not permanent. We have begun looking for another cure, and hope that this next one will work better.

In a few months, when we have done further in-depth research, I will call upon you again to see if we can make the cure stick.

Jazamin thanks you all kindly for your time and effort. She is still quite shy, since she does burst into rhyme quite randomly.

Jazabelle Wra'Eth, Head Librarian of the Norrathian Research Library, Kelethin Branch

OOC:

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Housing Scavenger Hunt. If you are one of those interested in touring the houses, but who did not want to participate in the Scavenger Hunt, the list of homes is at the end of this post.

This seems to have stirred up interest in player quests via housing. People have been asking me for what I've learned while creating and running this hunt, and for the behind-the-scenes of what went into this, and so here it is!

First of all, thank you for all of the kind compliments directed at me for the clues, but I did not write them. The only verse I wrote is repeated six times. If you've done the hunt, you know the verse I'm speaking of! I believe my clue writer wished to remain anonymous (I may have misunderstood – I do that a lot, sorry) but if they wish to step forward, they are welcome to.

Our planned schedule for the Scavenger Hunt:

Week 1: Collect submissions for homes to include in the HSH. Write clues for homes as they come in and clue locations are picked.

Week 2: Write clues for HSH items and locations, and make sure clues are placed.

What actually happened:

Week 1 and 2: Collect submissions for homes to include, write clues, pick clue locations, write clues for HSH items and locations. Have real life intervene. Panic. Two days before the HSH starts, scramble like crazy to get clues placed.

On to what I learned!

Make sure your event does not heavily overlap anything else. Many people wanted to participate in the Housing Scavenger Hunt, but chose not to because of the events (including an expansion release!) going on at the same time.

In the case of a scavenger hunt, you're going to have clue locations and items. You can choose to do what I did, which was to have two sets of clues, one set that guided people through the tour, and a second set that sent people off to gather items/find locations. Or you can have them be entwined. One thing I do suggest – mix it up a little. And make it abundantly clear which are locations and which are items. In my case, I left the items for the final clue. This was A Very Bad Idea. Many people missed the final clue since it was in my house, and they assumed that the second-to-last clue was just telling them to come find me.

Beta test your hunt! The hunt was not finished until the day I opened it up to be run. This was another Very Bad Idea. I should have found volunteers to run through it. Things that seemed perfectly clear to my clue writer and myself were not necessarily clear to the people running the hunt, since they did not have inside knowledge on what the items they were looking for were. I also had one instance where I meant one place when I told my clue writer where to send people, and I wasn't clear. So my clue writer found a second place that matched my description, and sent people with detailed instructions there. Unfortunately, I gave the homeowner much more detailed instructions on where to place the clue, and they placed it in my original location. We had to shuffle the clue around to get it to the correct spot. This could have been avoided had I actually ran through the hunt myself before it started.

Cap the number of homes you're going to include. The final tally for homes I wound up with was 79. I had expected maybe 10 homes. Two homes wound up being excluded due to an inability to contact the homeowners. Aside from that, everyone else managed to place their clues. Next time I am definitely capping the hunt at 20 homes. 40 if I decide to do a good and evil track again. Depends on if any Neriak houses are included, I suppose!

If you have a separate set of clues for houses and items, make sure you decide on the items first. I gave my clue writer and myself two weeks to prepare for this. One week of collecting houses and writing clues, and one week of distributing clues. Due to real life complications, and the sheer number of houses, we wound up spending two weeks writing clues. The final clues were written mere days before the hunt started, and I wound up pasting clues into notebooks – which I had to scramble to obtain, thank you so much to those who donated books! – two days before the hunt began. I had wanted to have all of the clues placed by that day, and it did not work out. If I had taken the time to figure out locations for the scavenger hunt items before I began my two week timer, and we'd had the clues written for those, it would have been that much less stressful. My clue writer was forced to write 13 clues for items in a very short amount of time.

Make it clear to those who submit homes that they cannot change the home during the duration of the hunt. To make things easier, finished homes are best. I originally chose to allow partially completed homes, since I did not expect to have many submissions. Boy was I wrong! Minor changes are acceptable, but we had at least one instance where a homeowner completely ripped apart an area that the clue described in order to find the next clue. Problem!

Create a channel for your event. While Homeshow channel has been more than kind listening to the HSH babble, I'm sure those not participating, or on other servers became tired of it after a while. In addition, if I had set up a channel, people might have been able to help each other instead of asking me. I know a lot of people were uncomfortable asking for help, and wound up stuck on a step for hours as they tried to figure it out themselves. I was perfectly happy to give gentle hints directing people, but my poor Hunters didn't know that! It would also have been a good idea for getting an idea of who might be participating in the Hunt.

Delegate! I know I didn't do much delegation (I had a clue writer, and someone who helped me find item locations for the scavenger hunt) and so it was quite stressful for me. If I had had even one other person touring houses with me, I could have split that in half and only had to tour about 40 houses instead of 79. Which I toured three times each, because I forgot to check for rent the first time, and had to check the placement of clues the third time.

Lists, lists, and more lists! Spreadsheets are a life saver. Especially the ability to sort spreadsheets by the different columns. I'll post an example of what a row in one of my spreadsheets looked like further down. It made organizing and figuring things out so much easier, and I would have saved myself hours of work if I'd just begun using spreadsheets in the beginning.

More lists, and even more lists! Keep a spreadsheet of those who begin your race, and those who complete it. I did not do this, and at this moment, I am sure I have forgotten to reward several individuals. (If you are one of them, please let me know. I know who completed the event, I just cannot remember if I rewarded you or not!)

And even more lists! Keep track of who donated what for rewards. Even if they say they don't need to be thanked publicly, it's a good idea to know who gave what if only because if they participate in the scavenger hunt, you don't want to give them something they donated as a reward!

Make sure that homeowners pay their rent before the hunt starts. Preferably as soon as you accept their house submission.

Figure out how you're planning on distributing rewards before you open your event to the public. I was arrogant and assumed I'd have at least a week before someone finished, and so would have time to figure out how I was going to hand out rewards. This was not the case. Remember how I said I had 79 house submissions? And 77 houses made it into the Hunt? It went like this: 26 houses each on the Good and Evil tracks (one house – the Library – is repeated in both tracks), then they merge into a neutral track. I wanted both tracks to be the same length and this was the easiest way I could think of. That meant there were approximately (I say approximately, because one of the guild halls withdrew after the hunt started since the guild leader decided to switch halls) 52 houses on each side. Someone managed to finish all 52 houses and find 8/12 clue locations on the first day.

I know this is getting redundant. But lists are important! Make lists. Make a folder on your computer, or keep a folder beside your computer (I did both) with your lists! Label your lists clearly. In my HSH folder, I have HSH_HouseLocs, HSH_Clues, HSH_HouseLocsPrintable (formatted for printing), HSH_Rewards, HSH_HouseOrganized. Most of those are pretty good. To be honest though, I have no idea what separates HouseOrganized from HouseLocs. I should have titled them more clearly, or put a description in the file itself. And if I were smart, I would have had HSH_Participants for the people running the HSH.

Absolutely anything that can be completed before you open the event up to submissions should be completed.

Ideally, my schedule would have looked like this:

Week 1: Decide on scavenger hunt clue locations. Have clue writer write clues for these scavenger hunt items.

Week 2: Open up house submissions for one week. Advertise heavily. Make sure houses are completed, rent is paid the minute submissions are accepted. Write clues as the houses are submitted. Cap the number of houses. If the submissions do not reach cap, oh well. If they do, put other submissions into a list for the next HSH. These houses will have priority inclusion in the next one.

Week 3: Have people place clues. Send beta runners through to make sure there are no snags. Organize rewards, keep track of who donates what, and how rewards will be distributed.

A sample of a row from ONE of my list files:

Sent?

Visited?

Clue

Station Name

House Owner

Rent?

City

Zone

Address

Clue location

Yes

Yes

Alauria now calls your name,She beckons you to wealth and fame. The third door on the walk of dead,Outside, through portal, you are led.To find a cave must be thy aim,

By dragon's lair ye must now tread.

eq2housing

Alauria

Needs 2 weeks

Neriak

3 Walk of the Dead

grayish book somewhere in the cave under the yard.
Oh yes, feedback on the HSH would be greatly appreciated! I'm planning another one for a couple of months from now, and I'd like to make sure it's as fun as possible for everyone involved.

I heartily agree on the capping of the number of homes. I loved seeing all the different homes, but I just could not get through all of it. So much zoning and zoning and more zoning! I had to restart my computer every hour or so from the workout the RAM was getting. I got a decent ways into it, but was not expecting *that* many homes.

I wish I'd more carefully thought through the way I went going about this. If I could start again, I'd screenshot clues instead of trying to write them down. So many! I'd also post a character in each city to switch to as needed instead of running Tock everywhere.

This has given me ideas for something I've been pondering since touring Wisty's Greely Manor in the summer of '09. Fun experiment so far. I'm looking forward to participating!

Should we send all the clue books back to you now, Jaz? So that you can recycle them for future events?

I am going to make a copy in matching books for the Library as an archive. I won't be using these clues again.

That is another thing I should have thought about at the beginning: Proper cleanup after the event is done! When a party is over, you bag the trash, clean up the spills, and wash the dishes.
I thoroughly enjoyed the "good side" hunt. Kudos to you for organizing this, kudos to the rhyming writer, and kudos to all the creative home designers. I found wonders to see in every home, as will become apparent soon. So many creative people here!

As requested, here's some feedback:

I think the clues were all solvable. Some clues were easier than others. Definitely knowing the geography of Norrath and a bit of lore helped. Some of the harder ones were the most fun for me to figure out, but that kind of thing is my cup of tea.

In a couple of instances, the books were definitely further away from the rhyming hint than I expected, but in the same general area, so it was no issue.

I liked the auxiliary searches. I thought it added diversity to have the side hunts for locations. I thought the rhyme in 6 pieces was quite fun. I won't soon forget the puzzlement it caused me pretty much until the second such rhyme came along and I realized what was going on.

The hunt did go on a bit longer than I expected. I like the idea of shorter hunts more frequently. Still, I was able to make time for the good side hunt. I definitely didn't have time to try the other side.

Oh, definitely, plan it so it doesn't coincide with world events. I imagine the people interested in this kind of event are the same people interested in the world events.

With the hunt as long as it was, I sometimes wondered why Jazamin almost always traveled halfway around the world between each clue. I would have thought she might search a city more thoroughly before moving on, but I'm sure under the circumstances she wasn't thinking entirely straight.

All in all though, it was one of the most fun experiences I've had in EQ2. I'm the explorer type on that Bartle's quiz, so this was up my alley. Even though, I travel and explore a lot, I'll admit I'd never before snuck into Freeport with a good character or been to the few higher level locations like Loping Plains or the market in Stonebrunt.

Once again, kudos, kudos, kudos!

Aluriel Goldenleaf, world traveller

Although I didn't complete the scavenger part of the hunt, this was very fun. Thank you very much, Jazabelle, your clue writer and everybody else who donated prizes and put their houses to be toured.

I will just agree with what everybody said. My only one confusion, about the items that had to be gathered, is you one that you already know and will make it better next time.

Also, a suggestion, maybe restrict the next hunt to not include guild halls. I know it may sound mean and probably a lot of guild hall owners will want to lynch me for this.... But see, guild halls are used by a lot of people. During a month a guild can reach the level to purchase a new guild hall. The guild leader (or leaders) then might pressured to move the hall to the new tier. And there is only so much they can deal with it because of some "stupid player event" as his guildies will probably think of it.

Again, that is only my suggestion. Whatever you decide for the next hunt I will be more than glad to participate on it again in one form or another. Next time I hopefully won't have as many things in my end too and will have more energy to do the scavenger part.

Again, thank you very much for everything you did!

as the "crazy house touring lady" i loved the hunt, and did both the full good path, and the evil path up until they merged. took me ~ 3 days total for the touring, but that's b/c my brain fizzled out after 20 houses, plus i was trying to write comments for everyone (i just realized i forgot to send the evil side ) i will say that the scavenger hunt was very daunting at first. i didnt realize that the location/item clues were just for locations, and i was one of those people that missed the last clue in jaz's house (i even ran through it, discovered the mushroom shelf, and still managed to miss the blatantly placed last clue). /embarassed jaz kicked me in the butt to get my eyes open and it all clicked into place and was well worth it (i lurv my reward beyond words <3 ) after doing it all, i am flummoxed & in awe by the major undertaking by jaz & her clue writer (awesome clues btw) all for the enjoyment of our community with no reward to them. so thank you. i think most in house clues were spot on, or close enough, i might have had trouble with a couple, but not enough to really slow me down. i was a little taken aback by 1 person's house that was completely packed up except for 1 room and another that seemed like they abandoned the project. i know in a couple of houses, the scavenger hunt took me back for a 2nd visit and i ended up finding areas/seeing things i never saw before all in all though, it was well done, i couldnt tell it was rushed, and i really appreciate all the work you did. happy to volunteer myself to help out for future stuffs, goodness knows i like to see houses

Thank you so much everyone for your kind comments!

I will be asking the homeowners in the coming week if I can take a few screenshots to highlight bits of their homes for those who couldn't participate.

To those who have still not yet received your prize, I am so sorry. I am working my way through my list, but it would probably be a good idea to PM/mail/send me a tell reminding me that you are on it. I have (if you did not know) the worst memory ever, and since I did not set up a spreadsheet for the participants, I am scrambling to get things done.

In addition, everyone who participated -- whether you completed the hunt or not -- will be getting a thank you letter from Jazamin! This may take a few days, as it involves dusting off my sage. Anyone who's spent time in Homeshow knows how much I hate grinding out notebooks...
