I use the editor sparingly prefering to work with the layout files in notepad++ but I would be happy to pop onto testcopy to learn how others use the editor and share some of the things I do with the layout files.

Thank you sooo much for having this class. I enjoyed seeing everyone, and learning. I had tried a couple of maneuvers on my own, but look forward to learning more. You are a very good instructor Gracey, and I hope I can make it there tonight.

Just wanted to say thanks.

ended up my download was over an hour long to test server. I should be ready tonight. Is the class tonight a continuation? Or will it be the same class for those who missed last night. (hoping to hear about inlays again)

Respectfully

Bibbony, Flibbity Jibbit extraordinaire

The class will repeat last night - maybe moving just a little further ahead tonight, depending on circumstances. No, we are not using voice chat - we are doing it the old fashioned way (typing). Cloudrat graciously let us use her guild so we could all chat in guild chat. I'm not sure if Pizazz will be there tonight for another demo, but we can hope! We all had a lot of fun and I look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

I'm going to try to make it tonight as well. I've never done anything with the test server before, but I'll try to muddle through it. I was sorry to hear that I missed out on the inlays and things. Expect one more for tonight

I only just saw this post and am sorry that I missed last night : / I'd LOVE to attend tonight! I'm not sure how to get a character to test server though. I don't need an empty character slot do I? Will try to figure that out when the server comes back up :p

Senya

No free slot necessary. =) If you've got 10 slots on live then you can have 10 more toons on the test servers.

If you go to character select and create a new character, you'll be given the option to choose from Test or Test Copy. Just pick Test Copy and preferably a toon based in Gorowyn, since that's where the lesson is being held .

Dumb question, but in order to learn something, I need to know the *why*. Do these classes go into the nitty-gritty of *why* things must be done a certain way? I understand that exact angles of 0° and 90° are problematic, so we must use 0.001° and 89.999°. But why the 180° roll?

By rolling 180 it means the top of the item will stay the same even if the scale is changed (which changes the thickness of the tile). This is handy when you are lining up tiles of different scale. It also makes things a little easier for doing patterns.

Ok .. I just finished up a new little feature for the editor to overcome the problem of manually replacing the UIDs when using the tile tool among other things.

This will be under "Tools" called "Replace tmp UIDs"

This will replace any UID that is set to "999999" (I changed everything to output this) with a UID that is the the selected layout. It will only use UIDs for items that are in the moving crate of the house and will not duplicate a UID that is already in the loaded layout (unless it in the crate).

I should have this up later tonight.

Eventually I will make it =( I really REALLY want to come an learn all the cool stuff you have to show about this layout editor that I can't figure out. Everytime I try getting over to Test I crash. I havent gotten much help from SOE on why so im gonna try a test copy again on a different toon from a different server and see if thats going to make a difference. (don't know why it would) but I have been trying since my original post =(

I hope to make it soon =/

Hi , I was wondering if anyone has some insight on a problem I'm having with a layout file from 2009.

My char was originally on Splitpaw (EU server) where I decorated a home at 4Bayle SQ. I have since moved my char to the Butcherblock server. I tried to load the layout I saved from Splitpaw but it doesn't seem to work.

I made a test layout file and compared them both in notepad. They appear to be very different even tho the house is in the same location on on both servers. I'm guessing because of housing updates since I last saved the file but I'm not sure. Any suggestions on how to make my old layout work?

I've never used the layout editor but someone said maybe it's possible to open the file in the editor and save it in the proper format to be used on Butcherblock.

just for visual reference , here are a few lines of my saved layout from Splitpaw:

3,Version Number1769688133,qey_ph_5r01 2561183564,10.39,11.25,-7.50,-180.00,0.00,0.00,0.50, false,"azure tapestry of the forsaken"1625803639,29.04,10.18,9.80,-90.11,-0.06,0.80,0.62, false,"Tapestry of Flame"

I hope I'm not sol with this , I really loved my house lol

The biggest difference I see between your file and one of mine, is that your coords only have 2 decimal places while mine take it to 8 each time. So, I think to get your file to work you would have to paste 000001 to the end of each of your coordinates... or, I'm assuming this, open it in the editor and save it. When I input coordinates in the editor, I rarely go beyond three decimal places and the editor tacks on the last five.

I hope this helps.

Kahlef

I am going through this by memory so take it with a big grain of salt.... Hopefully someone more knowledgeble with the technical issues will pop over here and explain it better.

The problem isn't the server transfer is the version numbers on the file. See, your file is version 3 which as Mazra pointed out has only 2 decimal places. Right now we are using version 5 of the layout files that uses 8 decimals. The EQ2 developers made it so any layout with a version number below 5 would not be compatible with the game anymore.

The reason for this is that with only 2 decimals things would bug out. When you saved the layout it would round up the coordinates of the items, occasionaly making items end up in invalid places and disappearing.... even items that you placed manually. Version 4, with 8 decimals, does not have that issue.

IF you are not afraid of risks, I think you might be able to fool the system to load that layout file by changing the line:

3,Version Number

to :

5, Version Number

Make a backup of the original layout file first! Then if it loads and there isn't any issue save a new layout in-game. But like I said, with two decimals there are chances things will bug out....

Also, keep in mind this not something supported by the EQ2 developers so you are on your own if something goes wrong.

My advice would be to start again from scratch. If it makes you feel better try to see it as an opportunity to incorporate all the new house items released since then into your new decoration!

Mazra

At the very least, you could open the layout file in the editor, select everything, and increase everything by .00000022 North and save it.

I did not however do this for version 3. You can however Open a new layout for that zone delete everything and them use the "merge in" feature to import the version 3 file. You can then save and it will be a version 5. Version 3 was buggy. Version 4 was less so bug still buggy.

It's great to see that there is a class tomorrow. Some nice posters have been encouraging me to give it a try. I have read the notes on getting to the test server and have a question. I read that if I log into one of my toons on live and type /testcopy add will create a copy on the test server. Is that true? It seems to easy and I am afraid to risk one of my toons by doing something stupid.

Still happening? I just found out about this topic (the Norrathian Home Show) and never heard of the layout editor utility. Sadly, I currently work at nights (9:30 PM - 6 AM EST), but if there are some step by steps or screenshots? And perhaps I could take a night off, if I know this is still going on.

Thanks for all the hard work, whether it's still going or not

Another great class last night. I am so happy to be getting the basics and beyond. I would recommend this class to all. Even more exciting it seems that the new roll out of building your own dungeon with the next GU will eventually lead to an ingame housing editor that sounds pretty sweet. I can't imagine the awesome homes that will come from that with the high level decorators in this game.

I am working on a bunch of new tutorial videos. The first one is for beginners and will cover the very basics. So if you cant make the class, there will be help soon. I actually have 2 version already recorded but I dont like them and will be redoing it again... Talking points for the 1st video are -

Running the editor for the 1st time

Saving/Loading layouts in-game

Overview of the Editor Interface and basic terms

Overview of EQ2's coordinate system.

How to Roll/Pitch an item

How to tile an area

How to Use Diff

Other video ideas -

Tile an Area (manually and with the tool)

Working with UIDs, Groups and Notes (review Diff)

Using the circle/spiral tool

creating a basic house type structure (on an island).

Is there anything else people would like to see? I might just record myself decorating an island or something explaining what I am doing and stuff like that.... just not sure how well that would work.

So... my last scheduled class has come and gone. I will no longer automatically be on test copy server on Thursday nights.

If you wish to have a class - please post here and I will make arrangements with you to teach. Or, you can also PM me or holler at me in game and I'll make arrangements with you.

There are so many people that have learned, and are now passing on the information, that I find the need for these classes minimal. I have enjoyed having each and EVERY one of you in my classes and hope you got something from them that made it worth the effort of coming to test copy server for them. I will leave the guild hall open to any who still need to refer back to the tiling displays.

There isn't a class that was held that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. This is why I love our community here - we are so willing to share ideas. Thanks to all that came!!! And.... PLEASE POST IF YOU WISH INSTRUCTION!!!
