View Full Version : A night at the Opera! (Image heavy)

As the air turns chilly, it becomes the perfect time of year to enjoy inside events like the theater, or the opera! It just so happens that there is an opera performance this weekend. How lucky for us! I welcome you to The Opera Populaire!

Just inside the entrance we can see posters of two of the divas:

Looking back down towards the entrance, we can see the ticket counter, as well as the poster of the lead tenor:

An odd feeling has come over me. The show should be starting at any time, and yet... there's no one to be seen:

Perhaps we should explore a bit? Upstairs we find the ballet dormatories:

Down the hallway, we can see a small nook where the girls have been lighting candles for their loved ones, but before we can check it out, we hear the creaking of old chains behind us. On the way to find the source of the noise, we pause at one of the private opera boxes. A note catches our attention. "This box is to be left open for my use. -O.G.":

As we hurry away, we notice that the maintenance door where workers can access the support chains of the massive chandelier is ajar. Also spied is a keg left by a stagehand that hasn't been taking his duties above the show seriously:

Suddenly I sense that we are being watched. We hurry down from the catwalks and into the auditorium. The set and props are in place for the performance of "Hannibal", but no actors or patrons are in sight:

Making sure that no one is looking, I convince you to sneak up onto the stage with me. We take a brief minute to admire the architecture:

But wait! What's that? We've spied a hidden passage to the stage! We've discovered how the actors find make their entrance:

Down the longest hallway, we find a dressing room:

And down a short hallway from the first, we find a second dressing room - the head diva's! Recalling the posters at the front of the opera house, we note that the flowers are all addressed with the name of the younger diva, but the painting within the room is clearly the more seasoned diva, suggesting that perhaps some usurping has gone on:

As we step into the room a chill goes up our spines! As we turn to face a wall length mirror, a haunting voice suddenly calls out to us!:

True to spectral speaker's word, when we turn to study our reflections, we spy a form flickering back at us! Is he real or a ghost?:

We step forward and notice a breeze coming through the frame of the mirror. The entire thing shifts, and we find ourselves in a hidden passage! Once we step through, the figure vanishes. Was he an illusion after all?:

As we decend into the depths of the secret passageway, we are stunned to find ourselves in the midst of a watery underworld:

I begin to ask where we are, but you quickly shush me - and then I hear it too... voices up ahead! In the water, a small boat lists, loosley tied. Someone has been here recently, and they might be in the next passage:

Ahead, through a waterfall, we make an unbelievable discovery - a plush secret chamber filled with mirrors, candles, and parchment scripts:

In the far corner we see a mannequin, and find it odd. When I approach it I am shocked to see my face reflected in the bridal effigy... I nearly faint! Obsessions aren't healthy after all:

Turning to make a quick escape, we hear a sinister laugh from nearby, and decide to make a closer inspection of the large throne in the corner - only to find that behind it is a secret door!:

Going through the hidden door, we find a hitching post where a horse was recently hobbled... but the horse is no longer present, and we get the feeling that our "Phantom" isn't either, since the door (we discover) is a secret exit from the opera house:

Approaching the secret exit, we confirm our suspicions. The opera ghost has left a single rose to taunt us with the fact that we are too late:

We agree that it's time to make our exit as well. This is far more than we bargained for in a night at the opera!

__________________________________________________ __

Important information:

The Opera House is located in Airbornee's South Qeynos Hall (First house on the right when you enter from Qeynos Harbor) on the Crushbone server.

I have been wanting to do this for so long, and working on it for over a month so I couldn't resist posting pictures in spite of the following: This is very much in construction, since I'm waiting for some of the new items to come out. All of it will get some tweaking, half of it is only (rather obviously) half finished, and some of the corners (especially in the new room) have random junk from the owner just piled in until I can figure out what to do with it.

Heed the Phantom's warning and stay out of box 5. It's slightly buggy yet and you may get stuck like I did. Eventually I plan to have it turned into something you can actually use, but for now... ugh.

There are placeholder things in there - bookshelves for walls - Sooooo 2004 (lol), and I plan on replacing all of those when we someday get dividers that don't look so tacky. The Phantom's mask... blech... I planned to at least use the Nights of the Dead skull mask, but mine has gone missing. Forgive how crappy it looks for now. The entire basement will get a rehaul if we do get water squares since I HATED working around the fountain walls when I wanted a seamless look. The chandelier, which I had envisioned to be my masterpiece, is just abysmal. I am still playing with ideas and hoping that the powers that be will put a huge non-antlered stunning hanging light source in the game.

If you do get stuck on anything (since I haven't tested it on larger toons), please let me know so I can fix it! As much as I'm sure the Phantom would like to see you stuck forever in his labyrinth, I'm not that cruel! I intended to make this in a guild hall. I still think it would be perfect, but right now I don't have the means without dismantling the work of other guildmates to get item count.

There are a couple little Easter eggs (some pictured but not explained) that you might recognise if you have seen The Phantom of the Opera movie version or stage version. Some are tiny details and I have plans for more, so keep your eyes open if you come to explore!

There is a rat wandering the halls, and I keep meaning to catch him but he's a sneaky bugger. If you find him in the basement, then... hoorah, he's a part of the decorating! If you find him elsewhere... apologize to the patrons for me and do your best to ignore him.

Finally, I hope you enjoyed the tour as much as I enjoyed making this massive project!

Thanks so much! It's been a long time since I've worked on a project I was this excited about. I would think about it when I was work and get excited every time I realized that the perfect items for what I wanted were in game. When that magic mouth was announced, I think I nearly passed out!
