View Full Version : Fatal Error (DX9 Out of Memory)

I've seen a few similar posts on here, but the steps suggested there haven't solved it, and the Station Support page is being wonky again (any time I try to check the log or update a trouble ticket, it sends me back a page instead - as if it had to re-authorize me and dump me back to the root page maybe?) so if anyone here can help I'd be grateful.

I'm running EQ2 on a WinXP (SP3) machine, and it had been running pretty well, even during extended play sessions, but lately this error keeps popping up:

Fatal ErrorEverquest II has detected an unrecoverable error and must shutdown.<verify> E:liveeq2frameworkcoredevicessrcDirectX9RenderDevi ce.cpp (2765):DirectX Error. (E_OUTOFMEMORY)0098b5fb 0098ec58

I checked this forum for similar events, and the response generally seemed to be that new video drivers or reinstalling DX9.0c would be the best solution. When I ran DXDiag, sure enough, some tests failed.

So, I uninstalled my video drivers, reinstalled DX9.0c, and installed the latest drivers for my ATI Radeon 3850 (yes, I know, I should probably buy a newer, better card if I -really- want it to run great, but that's not in the budget.)

I've run through DXDiag and it says there's no longer anything wrong with my DX9 install, all the tests and modes go fine, the new display drivers haven't (at least not that I've seen) caused any problems and seem to be working fine..

But EQ2 continues to drop that error and close after a paltry few minutes of play time, even if I turn off all the flashy effects and just have my character stand still in a small, visually undemanding zone. It never seems to happen while loading or zoning, which I would have thought would be the most graphics-memory instensive times.

I'm at a loss as to why this would be happening, or how to prevent it, so I'll leave everyone with a broad question:

Any suggestions?

Update:

I was running EQ2 again just now to see if lowering the display settings would help (answer: no) and noticed something curious.

DXDiag reports no problems running the DirectDraw and D3D tests.

Then I run EQ2 and it gives me this error.

After that, DXDiag fails some of the DirectDraw and D3D tests, which according to the troubleshooter included, means I have to reinstall DX9 again, BUT...

Rebooting causes the tests to run correctly again, just the same as it did when I reinstalled DX9, right up until I run EQ2, at which point all diagnostics report that directx is corrupted or damaged somehow.

I don't know why that is, or why rebooting matters. Or -if- this matters at all in terms of finding a solution.

a corruption in the DX data?

Greetings,

It almost sounds like there's a problem with some of the RAM on the graphics card. Are you getting a similar error in any other games? You might want to try running a graphics stress test like 3dmark to see if it crashes out with the same error. If it does, let us know what test it was on when it did so. Here is a link to their website:

http://www.futuremark.com/download/

(just download one of the free versions)

Hi I am getting the same error. The error I am getting after I get into game it lags then threres a ding then i get a critical error and i get the message application ran out of memory requestiong 1398256 bytes limit 767MB current 767MB. Then I get the error that this programme has closed in an unsual way and I have to close it out completely. I had got my computer back last week and told my computer guy. He took the computer back and reloaded everything and ran tests. He says there is nothing physically wrong with the computer it must be eq. He reloaded windows and new video drivers and well cleared entire computer and started again. If more than one of us is getting this error surely there must be a problem with eq.

Please dont let this be like when SOL came out in eq1 I was told it was my computer for 5 months why my screen kept going black whenever I traded or opened a bag. Then finally there was a patch that said oh ya we fixed the error with such and such video cards that was causeing screen to go black. 5 months man of being told that I needed to upgrade my already upgraded computer.

Please give me a suggestion to fix this error. Thanks

I've got dual Nvidia 9800gtx+ running sli, an intel dual core processor, and 4gb of ram, running Vista 32bit. I see no reason for an out of memory error to occur on a system that has more than enough memory to run eq2 and I don't even run any applications in the background except sometimes my music player or ACT. But I've tried running eq2 with nothing at all running in the background and it still happens. I've tried multiple drivers and am currently running the Nvidia 186.18 drivers (released today) and am still having this issue. I have both dx9.0c and dx10 installed so I don't think it's a compatibility issue.

Please, if someone knows of a possible fix let me know!

The game wasn't designed to take advantage of SLI so the performance change shouldn't be noticable. Some people who had this same issue while running SLI have resolved it by disabling SLI while the game is running. I would advise turning that feature off temporarily, at least for testing.

I have an older PC, WinXP, ATI 9700 vid card, 1.5G RAM, but it ONLY happens when I zone into the guild hall.

All drivers are up to date, and I run nothing in the background.

I have an Intel Duo Core with 4GB RAM, 8800 GT with 1GB VRAM, 10K RPM disk drive running Vista 32 Pro (with everything up to date on patches) and any attempt to enter the Guild Hall causes this error. I've had this problem ever since the GHs were introduced. There are also 88 pages of people with similar problems on the other Tech boards. This is a very known issue. All types of hardware and operating systems. Nothing seems to help.

You guys need to be aware that you are NOT talking about the same issue. A DX9 out of memory issue, and a generic out of memory issue are a completely different piece of hardware that is effected. The guild hall has been known for and discussed about atleast 40 times on these forums, and have concluded that you should turn down your graphics before entering the guild hall.

OP - Like the TSR said, download 3dmark05 (my fave version). It should be very easy to find from google. It's completely free unless you upgrade to the Pro version.

Others who are experiencing your APPLICATION running out of memory, rather than your dx9, need to keep in mind that it doesn't matter how much RAM you have with this error. If it's using up the memory with your current amount in certain zones, when entering those zones, you need to turn down your graphics a bit. In places like the guild hall, there are an extreme amount of items to load, and it eats up memory -quick-.

One last thing to remember for people that claim 8 gigs of ram; EQ2 is a x86 application. It will not utilize more than 4 gigs of ram at one time. If you have 8 gigs of RAM, it will use 4. The other 4 will be of use for running windows and other things in the background, but will NOT help EQ2 itself.

Before posting you have the same problem as the OP, please make sure you actually do have the same problem as the OP. It's hard to cure a cold when you actually have the flu.
