Well I've only been playing for a few weeks now and I have had this happen to me twice, once in Antonica and once in Thundering Steppes. I killed a group of Highwaymen in Antonica and after they were all dead a glowing gold statue popped up. I had the ability to 'use' it and the hand popped up when I hovered the pointer over it, as far as I can tell nothing happened when I used it other than some particle effects around my toon and the statue disappeared. The second time I killed some undead farmers and another statue appeared again, I used it again, and the same thing happened.

Have any of you experienced this or know what this is? Nobody I've asked has any idea.

These are what we used to call static camps, they occur in most (if not all) of the original EQ2 zones.

There is usuually an item the camp is based around, like a tent, a campfire, or something like that. As said above, these give your group (provided they are standing close enough) a buff of some sort when you click on them. I still see them quite a bit; most recently in Sinking Sands after killing an area of the lizardmen. I've gotten things like an increase to elemental resistances, the "Lion" buff mentioned above (the first one I encountered when I started playing, it was a cauldron in that case), increases to stats, etc. They last 10-15 minutes. I've had them recently appear off the giants by the crater in TS, sirens in TS on the underwater temple among others. It seems like there are certain groups of mobs that trigger this when you kill all the ones in an area (similar to the annoying merchants who beg you to help them escape from the middle of a bunch of gnolls or whatever). Once we had the siren one pop twice in a row after clearing the temple a few times doing lore and legend.Check your icons in your maintained stats window and look for an unfamiliar icon to see what the buff is/does (or mouse over them each in turn if you don't pay attention to what the icons are normally). You can also target yourself and do the same with the icons that show up in the target window although they are MUCH smaller. I've had it happen where some people in the group didn't get the buff because they were too far away when the item was clicked.

I've gotten these buff rewards from defeating group encounters (usually ate camps) fairly often.

Mostly from killing Sabertooth Gnolls in Thundering Steppes, but also from killing Sirens (as well as Gnoills and Highwaymen in Antonica) and, most recently, I even discovered a place in Sunken City where this can happen (near the ruined shrine of Prexus is).

I had once a long time ago had a similar item appear after killing a group of mobs in Zek, it was a box - more

like an ark .. as in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was glowing and no one knew what it did.

I found an old screen shot, anyone know what it is??

Although I have to admit, some of the execution of these things (especially the static camps) is not exactly well done.

Edit: in order to do this and make it worthwhile, adjustments to the type of buffs offered and their duration would need to be done. Making some mid level zones have a 1 hour buff that increases achievement experiance gain by 50% would be cool, or a haste/casting speed buff, maybe even a small damage proc.
