I've played a swash up to 17 and a pally up to 19, I really like both classes but am leaning more towards the paladin atm. From reading these boards however it seems that the paladins are a very slow soloing class (I have a family, 2 jobs and plenty of other time restraints so I end up soloing quite a bit.)

My question is at what point does the solo viability of the paladin start the downhill turn?

I was trying to solo Overseer Thix up near the top of bb a couple of days ago with the paladin and was almost able to do it, I'd get him down to about 5-10% before I'd run out of power and be relegated to a shiny doorstop. This was when the pally was 18, I think the Overseer was a 13 ^^^ heroic. Last night I tried again as a 19 paladin and was able to finish him off finally (my first ornate chest ).

I wanted to see how the swash would compare in the same setting so logged him in to bb. He was able to solo the 13^ mobs very easily and very quickly but when I hit a 13^^^ heroic (un-named, just an excavator) it just completely slaughtered me. I don't think I was able to get him much below 75% before I was on the ground.

Do I suck at playing a swash or do they get exponentially better when the get older?

As a side note I would play the paladin hands down if I didn't have so many time constraints. I don't really have a ton of time to do the research that seems almost neccesary to play a good tank at this stage of the game, or commit to an active guild that I can grow with.

Heroics are very hard to solo at any level. They have 9 gazillion hit points

Pallies can solo fine. Get a good two hander and with your heals, you can take down some mean stuff. Though with a plate class, it's move expensive to get good armor. If you want a quick and dirty class that can solo without much investment, a pet class like necro or conj might be better.

But....we're talking about fast soloing. Regular leveling can be done at a good rate in any class. I've soloed a Defiler almost to 50 with a few months of casually playing her.

You just need more experience with a swashbuckler. They actually solo pretty well. However, I would stick with the paladin since that is obviously the one you prefer. Don't worry about your time constraints. Just log in and have fun. =)

Thanks for all the quick feedback.

I think I'll stick with the paladin as I do tend to enjoy it more.

I solo most of the time but have found that Overseer Thrix has been a particularly hard take down for my characters. I do not have problems later on with stormhold or fallen gate nameds, but he is tough - possibly because at that stage you have less abilities to use on him, but I also notice you can get him to about 30% health then he seems to up his damage output.

The swashie ends up with a stack of short term stuns allowing you to get behind and backstab away without much risk - so that is part of why they move ahead in solo ability. Stealth allows you to move around easier, and evac for those imminent death moments.
