OK Simple Question: Is there an option that you can set which will allow you to autotarget what is in front of you in combat? It seems to work for my Paladin (activate attack mode with nothing targetted and I will start swinging at the closest mob), but with my Mystic, I can't seem to fight anything until I specifically target a mob. If I set some sort of option to do this for my Paladin, I can't recall where I found the option. Is there such an option or am I just confused? Thanks
You'd have to have something targeted before you can auto attack, that or the mob has hit you.

Melee AEs (blue background) will allow you to 'start autoattack' without specifically targetting anything first because most of them turn on autoattack. For casters, there aren't any spells, that I know of, that turn on melee.

>>>You'd have to have something targeted before you can auto attack, that or the mob has hit you.<<< OK I guess I will have to go back to my Paladin and check just how I managed to do that before (or maybe I was just imagining it). >>>Melee AEs (blue background) will allow you to 'start autoattack' without specifically targetting anything first because most of them turn on autoattack. For casters, there aren't any spells, that I know of, that turn on melee.<<< I converted all my spells to CAs, so getting autoattack going isn't a problem. It is just the targetting issue -- I'll try using by blue AE to see if that does it. It's usually an issue where I am fighting several mobs at once. Once I have killed one, I have trouble sometimes getting the attack going on the next one until after it hits me (and thus gets targetted).

Just simply hit your Keyboard Key you have assigned to "Auto Attack" for melee. this will automatically target the nearest combatant. The only time this doesnt work is if you're attacked while harvesting. In that case the node is your target.

I have my Q key mapped to autotarget. As soon as one mob falls, I simply hit the Q key again and will automatically begin meleeing the next closest mob. Works best if you are using autoface in combat though.

Good luck!

Press F8 to target the nearest mob and cast/swipe away. Oh and more completeness... I believe F7 is the nearest player (can't remember if it's the nearest player IN GROUP or just any old player).

>>>Just simply hit your Keyboard Key you have assigned to "Auto Attack" for melee. this will automatically target the nearest combatant.<<< That's what I am trying to achieve. It works on my Paladin, but doesn't work on my Mystic. With my mystic, if I have nothing targetted, I will just sit there and do nothing. I do have auto-face turned on. EDIT: I usually use TAB to choose a target, but half the time I end up targetting a harvesting node or some mob across the zone. >>>Press F8 to target the nearest mob and cast/swipe away.<<< Don't think I have ever used F8. I'll try that. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I just tested it on my Paladin and in fact it does not auto-target. I thought it did. I have to select a mob before I can attack it. So no mystery. It would be really nice if you could autotarget though.

Normally you get a mob as target as soon as it hits you, however this may take some seconds if the mobs miss you.

I find the fact that fighters (and scouts?) will physically defend themselves - ie start autoattacking anything that attacks them while casters stand there and don't to be frustrating. Playing a healer and having to click the autoattack button gets old really fast. A fighter will often win an encounter if the PC crashes/ EQ2 goes LD etc - a caster is dead meat.

>>>Normally you get a mob as target as soon as it hits you, however this may take some seconds if the mobs miss you.<<< OK after a little more experimentation, I think I understand why I am finding targetting much more annoying on my mystic than on my paladin. On my paladin, when soloing a group of mobs, when one dies, the rest of them are still attacking so there is very little delay before something else is targetted. On my mystic, there is usually a big delay before a new target shows up automatically. There appear to be several reasons for this. - when fighting multiple mobs, I debuff their attack speed so which increases the time to my next hit. - my mystic's AGI is way higher than my paladin's. So mobs miss me a lot more. On my paladin, I get hit a lot but it is absorbed by my armor, health regen, wards, etc. (think I need to work on my Paladin's AGI One thing I am not sure of -- does parry/block activate autotarget? I think I just need to practice F8 a bit (or move it somewhere more useful) -- maybe macro it with autoattack?

Go to Options > Controls There is an option which will be something like "Target nearest mob when Auto-Attack is enabled" ... that's what you want. Then, map your auto-attack to any key - and just use that key. Nearest mob is automatically targetted for melee and you enter attack mode at the same time. It's a huge timesaver and convenience.

>>>There is an option which will be something like "Target nearest mob when Auto-Attack is enabled" ... that's what you want.<<< Yes, thank you. I wasn't imagining it. This was indeed the option I was looking for. It was under controls-view options "Enable Target-nearest with autoattack" I would suppose you might want to disable this if you are in an area where there are friendlies or neutrals around...
