WOW!!!!

Please, allow me to elaborate!

I've been playing this mmo crud since Kunark release day, EQ1. I ran the DAoC gamut with the first druid to 40 on the lancelot server; one of the first to hit the 30's and quit when City of Heroes did it's whole "Boom-we're-so-awsome-oops-guess-we're-not," debut; had a few kicks in SWG, wasn't really my cup 'o noodles; picked EQ2 over WoW and hit lvl 49 carpenter before anyone else, and realized how ridiculously stupid THAT was and quit a day before I would have made lvl 50; decided to give WoW the go around and went PvP-insane for a good solid hardcore year with the #1 PvP guild on Emerald Dream (was the first "Standing:1" on the server when honor system started.) I gave Vanguard a faithful whirl until the honest half of me finally realized that Brad ain't Oprah after all. I even gave EoF a week's play, and though I was impressed with the direction the game seemed to be headed in with that expansion, the xpac alone wasn't *quite* enough to make me want to keep playing.

I've been a lurker and sometimes poster on every major forum site dedicated to MMO's, and some minor ones. I witnessed Furor's legendary rants in real time at FoH, and I still check up over there daily. Though I left this game long ago, there's not a week gone by that I didn't spend at least an hour catching up with how things were progressing here.

Basically what I'm trying to get across here is that I've been around this block many 'a times. I'm 36, got a gamer wife (she stuck with EQ2 all the way up to VG while I played WoW) and a gamer kid. No it's not all we do (we're off on a week-long camping trip come the 5th), but yes we DO game ALOT as a FAMILY.

Sorry for the long preface, but this post is aimed mainly at the crowd who checks out these boards to see what the word on the street is, and not aimed so much at current players who may be set in some bad ways when it comes to EQ2, and I want these players to know I'm no noob. There's not alot in life I cant point to and say, "I know about that! You should listen to me!" But when it comes to MMO's, I really do believe I can do that. I have confidence in my criticisms of what's good and bad in an MMO, and I'm here right now to share some very good news for fellow MMO gold-seekers about this new free update to EQ2...

With the introduction of the city of Neriak to EQ2, the latest incarnation of Norrath just gained... a soul. Never in any MMO I have ever been a part of has there been such a overwhelming sense of LIFE, and CHARACTER, and... wow... FEELING!

Does this update change the dynamics of gameplay for EQ2? Probably not much. EoF did that quite a bit though, along with other updates -- It's a far cry from the game that first launched.

EoF promised soul, though, and Neriak delivers - BIG TIME. Simply put, the NPC's of Neriak are just godly good. The voice overs are 100% NOT to be missed. The voice actors for this must have really believed in what they were involved in because... they shine, baby. I'm talking near-"Baldur's Gate" quality voice acting. Granted we'll never get to know any of them the way we did with Minsc and Boo, but the same intensity, in smaller chunks, is there nevertheless.

You guys know how it's fashionable to have little "NPC plays" going on in towns to lend a sense that the town holds some life of it's own? Like the "stolen dolly" bit in Stormwind, or Fippy Darkpaw's incessant tirades outside of Qeynos? The always kind of run on a loop and you always know the drama will soon and repeat itself for your amusement (or lack thereof) once again.

Well move over EVERYBODY - there's some new loops in town, and if you have the comp and the sound, and you're zoomed in on the scene like you should be if you're gamer who likes to be awed, you WILL stay and watch the play, again and again and again. Neriak has got quite a few of these loops and a few of them are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The most jaded A-hole out there may look at them and say, "Nothing new, big whoop - just another loop." Well I just have to argue back to you beforehand that, although you're right it's nothing conceptually new, technichly and graphicly and DRAMATICALLY it's knocks the holy snot out of every kid on the block who's trying to sport a similar toy.

Neriak is breathing as much as any virtual world could possibly breath given our current state of the art.

I challenge anyone with a really solid comp and nice sound, etc, to head back to the Queens castle. Check out the Queen's throne room. Go outside the castle and watch as a certain instructor gives summoning lessons to her students. Look at and listen to the students as she instructs them. Behold her results. Place yourself along side them and hear the instructor's words as she delivers her lessons. Pump up the graphics, pump up the sound - prepare for your MMOGASM.

There an odd little purple Arasai with a most interesting accent lurking in the shadows of Neriak with a "Super Secret, Dark, Evil Plan." He's willing to take you on as help, but not if you need to know what his plan is. Go and talk to him. Listen to him. When all's said and done, I'm wagering you'll ask yourself, as I did, "Where has the 'RPG' in 'MMORPG' been, and will it please stay this time??"

Bottom line: with EoF, Neriak, and now Kunark to come, I can't help but think that if the game stretches itself backwards and forwards in the spirit it's showing now, Everquest 2 could honestly be a comeback phenomenon for the ages, and I do believe it's only up to the MMO players out there to open their eyes to the pro-evolution that is CLEARLY taking place.

Keep up the fantastic work, guys.

--Peace

I'm s'posing it's because I was on the test server when I did it. Neriak still has some kinks in it but I'm hoping that they will start stomping on the bugs Real Soon Now© !
