The last I heard they were going to be shutting the chat servers down. Don't take that as gospel, for sure.

I also heard that the chat server will be going away, forever, and soon.

The problem was deemed beyond repair as the problem was not with the chat servers but with the primates using it. Every time things happened that caused people to massively load into Chat, the primates who could not control their own behavior and speech took over the zoo. It then became a game between them to see who could sling the most fecal material at the bystanders trying to actually chat and find out what was going on. Then came the boot-fest to see who could get booted the most times until the moderators were forced to lock down the zoo. Personally I think a better solution would have been:

Only allow you to use a actual character name from your actual account to log in and chat.

If your booted from chat because you could not control yourself, your booted from the game for "X" amount of days (suspension).

Imagine the worst names you have seen slip by the naming filters and multiply that x10. Imagine the worst spam in game chat and multiply that x100.

UlteriorModem wrote:

Can I ask a question...

What the heck are you guys talking about ?

To add to what Looker said, the most significant use of them was to find out in real-time what is going on during a problem. For instance, if all the servers went down, you could go to the out of game chat channels to find out what was going on. As others indicated, it often ends up being a place where people vent their frustrations rather than seek information. It would not surprise me if they eliminated them.
