View Full Version : Disruptive Bug: Changing any in-game options = resetting keyboard settings!!

Pretty much anytime I change any settings what so ever, my movement keys and chat keys reset to what must be the default. It may also still happen when my quest journal updates...which i believe is a bug that was supposed to have been fixed. It is very annoying and hugely disruptive to game play...especially since it resets my "/" key to toggle walk/run....not begin a command... Please help!

The resetting of the keymaps and the Quest Journal bug are two different beasts as the later would crash the game and reset your entire UI setup.

Try the following and see if it helps your keymap issue:

1. Log on and set your custom keybinds as desired.

2. Save your keybinds by typing /save_keymaps eq2_keymap_custom.ini

3. From within the Options menu select Other from the Keyboard Layout drop-down list.

4. Log off EQ2

5. Inside the Layout directory make a copy of the EQ2-OtherMode.cfg file and rename it to EQ2-CustomMode.cfg

6. Edit this new CFG file so that it reads as:

name=Custom

options=

uisettings=

colors=

keymaps=eq2_keymap_custom.ini

7. Edit the eq2_recent.ini file so that the following line is changed from:

cl_configuration_file EQ2-OtherMode.cfg

to

cl_configuration_file EQ2-CustomMode.cfg

8. Log on and from within the Options menu select Custom from the Keyboard Layout drop-down list.

9. Confirm that the keybinds are working as desired.

10. Log off and reboot your computer.

11. Log back on and confirm that the keybinds are still working as desired.

Essentially you are telling EQ2 to load up the CustomMode.cfg file upon log-in and that file is telling EQ2 to load up the eq2_keymap_custom.ini file and that particular file is telling EQ2 how you want your keybinds set. Apparently, you need to instruct the game on how to recognize your custom keybinds upon log-in so that you won't need to continually re-load them between sessions or everytime you change an something in the Options menu.

Ok, thank you for showing me how to save the keymaps. beyond that, i have no idea what you mean by "3. From within the Options menu select Other from the Keyboard Layout drop-down list." I couldnt find a keyboard drop down list anywhere in the options. the problem is that even if i change the eq2recent.ini file to go to the custom file, that only fixes the problem upon loading the game. normally, i dont even have the problem when i load the game. it only occurs when i change ANY option in the options menu, and click accept. now, of course, all i am doing is pasting "/load_keymaps eq2_keymap_custom.ini" whenever the bug occurs, which is MUCH less of a pain in the [Removed for Content], but it doesnt fix the problem.

When you open the Options menu there is a Drop Down menu in the bottom left corner called Keyboard Layout. From there you will follow the instructions that will eventually lead you to have your custom layout selected from this drop down menu. Every time you load the game or change any options your custom layout will remain selected. Therefore, when you close the Options menu it won't reset back to default as it will use your custom layout options instead.

Remember, the game calls upon the eq2_recent.ini file when it's loaded and when the Options menu is Opened and Closed. If you have a custom layout created and selected from that drop down menu then it will always call on your custom eq2_recent.ini file, therefore avoiding the default resets.

I honestly believe that this will resolve your problem so if you have any further problems with the instructions please post here or send me a PM. I would really like to get this resolved for you so that you don't struggle with this any longer. I know first hand what a PITA this can be. Once I set up my custom layout I haven't had these issues for nearly 10 months now. Just don't give up, we can get it fixed for you.

Follow the steps in order without skipping any and all should work out well. Again, any trouble with any step please say so and I'll do my best to help.

I had this bug for a few weeks (very frustrating) and it suddenly cleared itself up in the middle of a Labs raid. I got feared and next thing I knew I was back to normal. Very strange.

ok...I did everything up until step 8. when i logged back in there was no "custom" option. however, the bug seems to have been fixed just by changing the cfg and ini files. if it comes back, i will repeat the steps. thank you VERY much for helping.

If you didn't have a Custom option via the Drop Down menu you might want to check step 6 again. The file listed on the Drop Down menu will be whatever you name it according to that step (name=Custom). Essentially you are telling the Options menu / eq2_recent.ini file to load the custom CFG file that you have created, which in turn points to your custom keymap.ini file. The option selected on that Drop Down menu is how the game knows to do this. It is conceivable that the drop down menu option could be skipped so if it ends up working then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If there's anything else about this issue that you might need assistance with please feel free to continue posting here or PM me if you like.

Best of luck and have fun.
