Hello to all.

I guess I am posting this to vent a bit after a frustrating night.

I have stopped playing EQ2 back in Feb. due to other interests.

So now I came back to play again and I am amazed at the major difference in soloing capability of a Necromancer vs Assassin. My necro is 20 and so is my assassin. They were both parked in the Nektulos forest. First I jump on my necro. Wowser. She is taking yellows 2 lvl higher and killing them with zero risk, killing fast and going pretty much non stop for about 4 fights. Keep in mind that she has very crappy gear.

Problem is that she gets bugged all the time and refuses to get out of combat after getting DOTd (hers or pet’s DOT would cause her to be stuck in combat mode). After 4 logouts I got sick of the bug and figured I will slice and dice with my assassin. Figured 6 months have gone by, no way the assassin falls behind the necro.

Booooyyy was I wrong. The poor assassin was getting spanked so bad that I had a hard time watching it unravel before my stunned eyes. I mean sure I killed enemies that were 2 lvls higher but at what cost? 50%-20% or less life left after a fight. And what grieves me the most is that I remember buys my assassin gear that cost probably 5 times more than what I spent on the necro. Yes you will say what is wrong with you killing yellows that are 2 lvls higher…well some that were only 1 level higher would still take me down to 50% life.

In conclusion I must say that as much as I love to play the assassin, seems that for soloing the buggy necro sure can shine.

Oh well, flame me if you must…perhaps when they change the combat system things will get better…until then….I will have to start a new toon.

Be well

GS

See i find the exact opposite, and i have necro and assassin at about the same lvl.

Are u kiting with ur assasin? are u using combat arts(melee) while kiting?

I Took down [burnspear] a lvl 34 ++ named with my lvl 30 assassin tonight. Ive killed paddlefoot in nektulos with a lvl 20 assassin. (without being hit once)

Get urself a shadow imbued hex doll, 6-8 gold, which isnt bad, conisdering what it allows u to do...

Get a decent bow, and are u using poisons?

Do this for me.. try taking down paddlefoot at behemoth pond in nektulos. Tell me if even with a 24 necro if u can take him down. Now try with a lvl 20 assasin, shadow hex, and a decent bow. He yields about 8% xp at lvl 20.

Now a necro could take him down at lvl 20 as well, ive done it, hoever it takes about 4x as long. Using a shadow hex doll, and imbued wand.

I have a wiz, necro, conj, and assassin, u can kite with all of them using shadow hex, and imbued wandsbows. However the assassin can kite 10x faster.

Also using caltrops or ensare w shadow hex, slows target to a walking speed.

GL

Oh, and shadow hex isnt really a must for assassin, like it is for mages to be able to kite. But it allows u to kite the double heroic named's mobs 4 lvl's above u.

Also...not trying to flame, but..

Making a new toon will not solve your problem. Having excellent equipment with any character, and using them to their full ability is what allows them to take down superior mobs.

All classe's complain they are nerfed, etc, etc. But in alot of cases people just dont know how to use their character to their ability.

The bad effect of this , is "balancing" ... They "balance" the game, and make "changes" due to people not knowing how to play.

I hope u try the assassin again, trust me, u would be amazed how good that class is.

Kiting (just incase u dont know)

- hit your auto attack for ranged, now if u have option set to autoface, as long as u dont turn your view, u can use movement keys, (backwards, left, right) and circle npc very easily.

- Use a shadow hex doll if u have one, then use any combat abilities that can be used on the move. Ranged abilities, and u can use combat arts ( though alot of times, it will say not close enough, just keep trying till next bow CA is rdy.) And u can even complete heroics while on the move.

- For a mage, get an imbued wand, u can cast it while running.

Message Edited by Malyk on 08-16-2005 08:25 PM

i'm having an easy time leveling through the 20's on my new assassin. This key to success at that stage is getting a 7.0 delay imbued bow (even a maple T2 bow will suffice) + the highest up-front damage poison you can use (insufferable anguish for T3) + ranged attack CA's (back shot, open shot or vladaminn's volley, the 20 training option).

At level 20 using an imbued maple longbow + insufferable anguish poison I was able to instant-kill yellows and oranges in Nektulos with back shot + vladaminn's volley, because with a 7.0 speed bow the poison procs almost every shot. If money is an issue stock up with as many tin arrows as you can carry (2c each), rather than using carbonites (29c per shot). If you cycle your high-damage special attacks (i.e. kill one with assassinate, then the next with back shot + vladaminn, then the next with shadowblade + vladaminn, etc.) you can continually kill them with little to no downtime, but you will burn through a lot of arrows and poison so be prepared to replace them.

It helps to upgrade all the useful skills to at least App IV, or adept I if you can find it on the broker, and buy the best player crafted or treasured armor you can afford from the broker. However, ironically as the highest melee damage class in the game, your melee weapons aren't even that important (at least not early on) cause until the revamp, dual wield auto-attack damage is pretty pitiful. a good 90% of your damage comes from CA's so i'm still using imbued blackened iron leafblades throughout the 20's and doing fine, rather than paying 1+ plat for 2 steel weapons that do maybe 5 more damage per auto-attack hit

To start with I do wish to thank you for your constructive suggestions and feedback, not just an empty flame.

1.As I read your posts I saw a pattern emerge. One word rang true. GEAR. I only have about 2 gold to my name so needless to say I have no chance to get those nice items you were talking about. Perhaps in time. Keep in mind that I am wearing things that were considered “OK” six months ago…lol I currently use 2X 9.1DPS daggers (which were the best available back in the day) and I saw a 13.something or even 16.something weapons available on the market (that I could use, they were very orange) at a price that made my eyes bleed. I do understand that a melee class generally is more gear dependent than your spell hurler, but I feel a bit gimped right now. Please understand that at launch I thought I had top of a line gear, or pretty darn close, and now I find that I am 3 lints away from wearing rags.

2.Now to the second issue. For some crazy!!! Reason when using backshot I missed every TIME. I mean I shoot and arrows fly yet…nothing. Bad guy is coming for me and I have not done any damage. Strange.

3.Would you guys be kind enough to list a poor-man’s decent gear that I need to be survivable? This way I can look for it to see how much cash I need. Also what is the best poison for lvl 20? I am at work right now so I can’t see what my assassin uses right now (I am firewalled).

Again I thank you for your input.

GS

Message Edited by GoatSlave on 08-17-2005 04:37 AM

1) Great gear is the factor, poisen is a huge factor. So knowing that, one should focus on a method to secure a cash cow. a) For me it was trade skills, all my toons do them. You get a knack for watching the market and catching deals. b) Another is harvest. Example: those glowing question marks, yeild a nice bounty that can be sold to other players. A properly funded toon is a awesome sight and fun to play. 2) What is your range skill? Is it maxed? 3) The Gear I like is usally the player made kind. again depending on what is on the market. (I made trade skillers, cause I wanted to be out side of the market woes.) On poisens, You can stack a debuff poisen and a damage poisen. Just look at what is on the market.

Also, if you're low on cash, being in your 20's is a good place to be. You can get free armor by doing your armor quests that will last you until lvl 30. This armor is a little better than the standard player made stuff too. You should have at least one good weapon that you got when you became lvl 20, and you should be able to buy a good weapon on the broker for your other hand for 50s or less. I know I found a good duel wield slasher for 20s on the broker when I hit 20 with my assassin alt just the other day.

But, like previous posters said, make sure your ranged skill is maxed and use your ranged combat arts. They really do make a huge difference when soloing (and grouping for that matter). To make money, loot everything and sell it. Harvest everthing you see. If you do these two things alone, you'll make some decent cash. I think you could make decent cash tradeskilling too. A lot of people are making alts now and there are not that many people selling low level stuff anymore. I know on my server it's hard finding T1 and T2 spells and combat arts, and when you do find them, they are WAY overpriced. You could probably make good coin just selling T1 spells for 20sp each. Those are just a few ideas on making money.
