<DIV>Anyone know the history on Varsoon?</DIV>

<DIV>I know there is a barmaid in Qeynos harbour who talks about it (sends you on a quest to visit the tomb), and there is information in the Bootstrutter's Guide to Antonica (which I would be really grateful if someone was able to post the exact text from that book), but thats all I can remember specifically. I know there is a lot more out there in the Qeynos/Antonica area (more to do with his tomb than the ruins in TS), just can't remember where</DIV>

<DIV>If I remember.. Varsoon was a guy who ran about Qeynos Hills in the time of EQL. When you killed him, he turned into a zombie named Varsoon the Undying. I guess he had some ties to the bloodsabers, a cult of Bertoxxulous worshippers in the Qeynos sewers. There was also a gnome necro named Pyzjn who droped something called a glowing black stone, which I hear if you cast identify on it it comes up as 'Varsoon's Black Heart'. Never was able to confirm it for myself though. Thats about all I remember on him.</DIV> <P><SPAN class=time_text></SPAN> </P><p>Message Edited by Kamimura on <span class=date_text>01-14-2005</span> <span class=time_text>05:20 PM</span>

<DIV>If you examine the GBS you get from the heritage quest; it says it was once believed to be the heart of Varsoon.</DIV>

Varsoon the Undying is still in the game, he's in the Keep of Imortality, a keyed zone in RoV, unless im mistaken. I remember a quest to kill him, one of the heritage quests i think, but i'v not seen him.

<DIV>In the art book that you get with the collectors edition it said that Varsoon was trying to uncover the secret to becoming immortal, he had gotten real close, but then something happened and all was lost except for the "Ruins of Varsoon" :smileywink:</DIV>

<P>The gnome and Varsoon mentioned in an earlier post were linked.  The gnome was delivering the stone to Varsoon and you had a chance to stop them.  The item itself was a +9 int stone (secondary or ranged slot) and sold for a lot of plat.</P> <P>When you killed Varsoon he would summon a skeleton army.  Qeynos hills was no longer a safe zone when he did.  At one point the skeletons ranged to lvl 35 (giant skeletons).  The sky turned red.  I forgot how the zone event would end.  It was funny watching the lvl 7 to 14 people bee line it for BB for cover.</P>

This is all paraphrased from what I remember from in-game books and quest info. Varsoon was a mage of moderate power during the days of EQ1.    He lusted for power, but his studies were enough to clue him in that those who reached the greatest heights were unable to do so during a "normal" lifespan, so while he strove to prove himself to the council of mages, he also sought the secrets to immortality.  In his search for power he discovered a heretofore unknown rune of magic, btw.  So he would normally be famous for that (at least within the schools of magic) except his further exploits over shadow such a mighty accomplishment. His search led him through the planes.   He visited the libraries in the Plane of Knowledge.  He roamed the Elemental planes.  He touch the planes of Divinity and crossed paths with many legendary figures. He eventually discovered, much to his apprentice's dismay, that he had the secret to immortality in his laboratory all along and returned after what turned out to be a many decades long journey (Its at this point that his apprentice throws his hands up in dismay at all the time he's lost and ends his service to Varsoon). Varsoon's researches into the information that he discovered were time consuming and required many workers to accomplish.  He established his workship near his old one - in the plains near Qeynos.   As he studied and grasped toward immortality, the value he placed on life in THIS plane began to wane and became known as a cruel task master.  Many of the Qeynosian peasants he hired as workers never returned to their families and, as happens with all mad and powerful men who secret themselves away from the world, rumors began to circulate. Several run-ins with the populace of the plains and those in Qeynos occured.  These are undocumented and details no longer exist, but they were bad enough to cause an uprising against him and his fortress was placed under seige. A great battle ensued with awesome magics unleashed.   Mages on either side (Varsoon's apprentices vs.  The Mages guild of Qeynos) released magics against each other that tore the fortress down to its very foundation and slaughtered hundreds, if not thousands, of soldiers.    It was during this battle that a lone figure emerged from the fortress and was consumed in fire.   Varsoon it was, or so it was believed, and his body was transported to a crypt on an island outside of Qeynos and there placed under guard so that none could desecrate, or disturb... or awaken him. Kaen, in the Vermin's Snye under Qeynos, has more information and his story will lead you to learn the rest of Varsoon's story, should you desire to know it. <div></div>

<DIV>Who was the mage who was seeking immortality but wound up hosing the spell up and being trapped in a crystal while his body wandered around his lab soulless?  I'm pretty sure the lab's in Velious in but can't remember the wizard's name.</DIV>

She went to Odus around when the battle that created the Hole occured and captured many of the Erudite Spirits of those killed in that battle. She then used those spirits to turn them into literal building blocks and built her Tower of Frozen Shadows from those spirits.

<P>Like they said, it sounds like you're talking about Miragul.</P> <P>From the end of his story:</P> <P>"Miragul then left Paineel, using a small portion of his dwindling life energies to make a portal back to his cache hundreds of leagues to the north. Upon arrival, he withdrew silently to his most secret laboratory and prepared his final spell. Dreaming all the while of endless exploration and discovery, he slowly made ready his ultimate experiment. The enchantment laced with necromancy was finally made, and Miragul hid  his remaining and fragile life within the phylactery, a small device he had pilfered from the other necromancers. Clouds of mystical energy gathered and then dispersed, revealing a shell of the man Miragul once was, an undead mage, what ancient scripts and legends called a lich. </P> <P>In his haste, however, Miragul had made a miscalculation. The lich, while retaining all the mystical power of his formal self, lacked a spirit. Only the mage’s soul, now locked within the phylactery hidden deep in the cache, retained the ambition and desire to amass knowledge and power. The spiritless lich possessed none of these human traits, and Miragul’s soul screamed in silence as the undead creature began to aimlessly wander his menagerie of wisdom and enlightenment, his rooms filled with artifacts of power."</P>

<DIV>No she was a gnome necromancer. The NPC's in EQlive correspond to the classes that that race can play as. Since  Halflings can't be evil, they can't be necromancers.</DIV>
