There's actually an npc in freeport that speaks about when the ratonga first arrived... How the guard was initially alerted as emissaries approached the town, but how they were eventually granted an audience with Lucan, and how hordes of ratonga arrived immediately after they were granted citizenship. States that no one knows where they came from.

<DIV>When the Ratonga were first announced, way back before beta - the designers wrote up a little background on them.  Evidently, the Ratonga were present in the Elddar Forest (which thanks to Solusek, became the deserts of Ro) and continued to live in the region after the trees turned to sand.  They lived underground for centuries and rarely a merchant would catch a glimpse of one - the Ratonga had a great loathing for the other races, though its not explained why.  What also isnt explained is why the Ratonga showed up on Lucan's doorstep all of the sudden.  There were rumors that he had a secret alliance with them for some time.  Perhaps when the continents began the shift and pull apart, they simply sought refuge.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I think there will end up being a lot of lore surrounding the Ratonga and Lucan someday - it all has a big "wait and see" feeling to it.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>EQOA has some lore on them. They are desedants of the wererats that where once a tribe of unkept druids. Had a big story arc in the game several months back when the 5 were tribes had some kind of civil war. <DIV>I am reading the history of the ratonga book from north freeport. It has me running to a bunch of different places before I can read the whole thing. So far there has just been a strange little story about some ratonga of long ago who got the fur ripped from her tail and thats why all ratonga have no fur on their tails, and a bit about if you comb your hair with (something..? forget) it will stay nice. Lol, not exactly history, but interesting, and for roleplayers helps you get to know the mind of a ratonga (which is a little disturbing). I'll try and finnish up the running around today, and post a log of the story.</DIV>

"Hail, Rilius Shadowsiege"Rilius Shadowsiege: "Watch yourself, kid. You never know what unsavory creatures might lurk in the shadows of this city."You: "What are you talking about?"Rilius Shadowsiege: "Come here, kid, and listen close. I speak about the vermin ratonga. They're an uncomfortably mysterious lot and they aren't to be trusted. Do yourself a favor and don't get involved with them. You don't want to play any part in their plots, trust me."You: "What are you talking about?!"Rilius Shadowsiege: "Everything, kid, everything. They've been here a mere twenty years and we still don't know anything about them! I mean, no one even knows where they come from!"You: "If they really are so mysterious, why are they allowed to be part of the city?"Rilius Shadowsiege: "Because the Overlord allows it, and don't think for a minute that I would dare presume to know the Overlord's state of mind again. Oh yes, I questioned his wisdom once but never again."You: "What happened to you?"Rilius Shadowsiege: "Oh, not much; just a decade's long incarceration with a troll for a cell mate and the stripping of my family's citizenship and welfare. But hey, at least I've still got my health."You: "So, you questioned the Overlord himself?!"Rilius Shadowsiege: "Of course not! I would be dead if I had been so foolish! No, I've never had the pleasure of a personal audience with the Overlord. My commanding officer overheard me harping about the ratonga infestation while I was off duty."You: "So, you were there when the ratonga first came?"Rilius Shadowsiege: "Yes, I was there. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was on the night patrol when they first came. It was shortly after dusk when the first of them slithered out of the sewers. It was just a few of them at first..."You: "Well, go on, spit it out! Tell me what happened!"Rilius Shadowsiege: "The city patrol was doubled and put on alert, but it was too late. In a matter of minutes the ratonga "ambassadors" had already made their way to the doorstep of the Foci. We were ordered to remain on patrol and guard the sewer entrances, but there were no more sightings. It was quiet for a few days after that. The patrol remained on alert and we all worked triple shifts, but the damage was done."You: "So the Foci killed them?"Rilius Shadowsiege: "What a logical conclusion that would be, eh? But no, she did not kill them. Apparently, she conceded to the vermin ambassadors' requests and an audience was arranged with the Overlord. Official orders welcoming the ratonga race into the city's populace were posted and before the ink could dry, the streets were flooded with the vermin, as if they had been there, invisible, all along."You: "Well, they obviously have some potential that's useful to the Overlord."Rilius Shadowsiege: "As a matter of fact, I think they have too much potential, if you know what I mean. No, I don't like them being here, not one bit and if you know what's good for you, you'll grow an extra pair of eyes in the back of your head, because they're everywhere."You: "I'll be sure to keep all of this in mind, thank you."<p>Message Edited by Hirebrand on <span class=date_text>11-26-2004</span> <span class=time_text>03:12 AM</span>

<DIV>just bought the new EQ novell that recently came out. havent gotten far, but already encountered somethin that in book is referd to as ratmen, the description of them fit ratongas, even tho they speak a bit as froglocks. the rats in questions was undead tho, might have affected them? it takes place in EQ1 time, with norrath still standing firm and luclin is flyin happily on the sky, so i was a bit surprised when they start talk of rat ppl. anyone else read it?</DIV>

<DIV> The undead ratmen in the eq1 novel were Chetari, which were mobs in Dragon's Necropolis in EQ Live. They are similar, but not quite the same as Ratonga.</DIV>

<DIV>The Ratonga (their true name is the Roekillik) were created by the Duke of Below, Brell Serilis. He gave the ratonga "enlightenment" and put them into the deep dank darkness of Underfoot, where they became ruler supreme.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Once settled in the Underfoot, they became a very cohesive society and their numbers flourished. Becoming more and more evil and intelligent they were out of control and Brell stepped in.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Basically he destroyed most of the Ratonga and had them start over.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>This second "breed" (imbued with some "mirth" via Bristlebane) is what now populates our fair world of Norrath. They were never intended to leave the Underfoot, but since the Ratonga were "touched" by Bristlebane, he may have given them more than mere mirth (stealth and cunning for example), and hence they found a way out of the Underfoot and made their way to "our" new world (the Shattering had alot to do with this). </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>And here begins their story on "top" of the land...  </DIV>

He destroyed most of them and locked a small number of them away in a great vault made of a stone they wouldn't be able to tunnel through deep in underfoot. They had really sharp teeth claws and really powerful mental powers. During the age of Cataclysm the vault they were imprisioned in cracked and they were able to escape. Right now they're busy exterminating whats left of the younger race of Ratogna that stayed behind under the earth. Apparently they dislike you little buggers almost as much as the rest of us.

Aside from the Chetari and Paebala there were rat-like NPC's pre Velious.. there are several to be found as slaves in Chardok. I'm not sure what the significance is, if any, but it's another sighting <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

However, Ratonga look nothing like hampsters and I would only expect an uneducated troll to make that mistake. You're not a Roekillik, though. You're a Ratonga. The RoeKillik, as has been mentioned, were the forebarers of the Ratonga, a larger, more intelligent and more powerful race. Guaranteed to be nasty mobs once someone finds a cave that goes deep enough. :pWOrked that into my Rat alt's backstory. When he learned about the Roekillik he was so disturbed that Brell would do that to his own creations that he ceased to pay any heed to the Earth god and learned the SHamanistic arts so he could call on the spirits of the Reokillik to aid him in battle.

And maybe there should also be a moderator going around making sure people dont blame it on 16yr olds. And anyway, here is a post by a 15 year old.If I were being cynical, I would just say that the Ratonga were put in to balance out the necessary good and evil races: the evil halfling if you will. However they do suit freeport very well. Their petty, innate corruption is not malicious, its just the way it is. Its like the ogre's violence and the cazicite's condescention. Living in freeport I do get a 'vibe' of petty crime and small-minded selfishness. The thing about the two breeds is interesting. That seems like quite a typical thing for a norathian god to do, just make something for the fun of it. Especially Brell "Hmm-I-think-today-ill-make-a-race-of-walking-beards" Serilis. It also shows the generally fallability of the Norrathian gods: they dont really have that much control over their creations.PS If you are really so hung up on these meaningless star things, turn them off on your profile.<p>Message Edited by JayemJale on <span class=date_text>03-07-2005</span> <span class=time_text>10:53 PM</span>
