Hi all,

at the moment I am considering to change class with the intend to either become a Templar, a Monk or a Paladin (as I have been for about 5 years in EQ1, but with which I lost faith due to unbalance).

My main questions in this context to you more experienced EQ2 Paladins would be:
  • I am not a person with a lucky hand concerning getting money, usually I am pretty broke. How expensive is the life of a Paladin, i.e. how much do you averagegly pay for armor repairs per evening at your tier?
  • Are there any signifant drawbacks about the ability to take hits (raw tanking) or to taunt?

Thanks in advance SMILEY

I'm only in tier 3, but I don't usually die unless grouped with twits (ok, so sometimes I die a lot :smileyvery-happy:). So not that expensive for me. I personally love my tanking, think I'm doing pretty well with the self-buffs and heals and ward. Need to spam quite a bit at start of fight to get aggro, but it's ok after that. Buying skill-ups is not that necessary; I personally find that a lot of the skills really don't add much at higher levels of quality. Exceptions to this are the ward and the heals. And I make decent money from selling the trash loot /shrug. I like my class SMILEY

It's just as expensive as you want it to be really. Having the best gear just faciliates the gameplay a bit, but it's by all means not necessary to be good Paladin. Even with the best possible gear you can wear, if your group sucks or some badass unexpected mobs get pulled you can die just as easy. Not having a lot of money is no reason for not starting a Paladin, just have fun and enjoy SMILEY

Personaly  I find the Pladain very effective as a solo class and also as a main tank. I've heard so many slanders and tales aout how we can't tank or hold agro. Yet I don't loose agro even with warlocks and assasins blazing away. Its all about using the character correctly and keeping your skills upgraded. On more than one occasion I've been told to be an off tank because the pick up group i was in had a bezerker or guardian incoming and as i was "only" a paladin they would be better. I don't know if it was down to their incompetence or not upgrading their taunt skills but they seemed to be unable to hold agro anywhere near as well as i do.  Oh and on parsers when off tanking I would be coming in near the top on dammage inflicted. The other great thing about Paladins is when you have a bellow par healer or oom healer if you've played clever you can keep going and survive where other tanks would have dropped. Our heals certainly do make a big difference. Note. I'm only 27th level atm, so maybe I'll find that the tales of how useless we are as tanks are true at higher levels. Personaly  I think if you work hard and do your job well you can certainly shine. As a note for any tank class the most important skills to upgrade are your taunt  class skills and keep laying them on throughout combat, not just once at the begining or after you've already lost agro. If all you want to do is solo and never group then obviously these aren't important. Personaly i buy every skill i can reguardless of type at app4 or adept 1 if i can find it.  I have no adept 3's.

I am tier 3 - 5 with all my equipment, some heritage items. Death costs me about 25 silver per death. My guild has enough crafters that I really haven't had to pay high prices to get good gear. I usually harvested like mad and paid em that way.The only aggro problems I have are in multi group aggro. If adds run up and nail the healer who then spazzes and heals themselves, I have a heck of a time pulling aggro off of em.

the question is kind hard to answer. you don't really start making gold till lvl 20, even after that you will make a couple of gold but nothing qualifies as "big fortune". you will have chances to see plat rolling in around lvl 30, and by lvl 40 you should have at least a couple plat sitting comfortably in the bank, and all this you can do without crafting or harvesting (like mee). at lvl 47 every death will cost me approximately 1 gold depends on which gear i have on.  drinks cost me about 10 gold every week that's with my "personal chef". but by lvl 40 gold will come so easy you won't even think about money. like in every game, if you are generous and hate the whole selling thing you will be poor and broke, but if you have a comp that you can leave on through out the day to sell on the broker you should do just fine with coins.

Your first purchase should be to get your inventory full of bags... if you have an outfitter alt you can make 6 slot bags with EASE.As long as you have no "space" issuses the mountains of skeletal hands and vats of Canine saliva you drag home easily pags for any armour repairs you may encounter. All chest drops and quest rewards  pool together  and allow you to upgrade your armour/spells.Wihout even trying you can support yourself all the way to level 50.The fact remains it is extrmely EASY to continally upgrade and I have had little money worries. If you want to be RICH however it will certinaly take a bit of work but for the bog standard equipment and progression you can coast through the levels withoutlittle effort on your part except to sell your loot once in a whlie. The cost of a paladinish life...? Buy what you need, upgrade when you can - sure its annoying that you can't buy all the fancy weapons all at once, but in combat even with all the average stuff you are not going to be weighed and found wanting.

First off money becomes easier and easier to aquire as you lvl through the tiers.  Once you hit zek and el you'll notice a jump and once you get to ferrott you'll notice an even bigger jump in cash.  Personally I'm just about broke right now.  Not because I can't make cash, but because the minute i see some gear better than mine i have to buy it or go get it.  Plus i like to experiment with different stats.

As far as fighting mobs.  Paladins are very good solo'ers.  Holding aggro and things like that in a group? Its really not a problem.  Lately when a zerker or guardian is in the group I prefer them to tank.   One reason is I can heal easier if i have too.  Second reason is thats their only roll really is to tank so let them.  Third, is if someone else is tanking I don't have to worry about holding aggro. =P You'll find some people that say there is a big difference.  But i've yet to see it when i tank compared to another class.   I am going to roll a gaurdian or zerker toon eventually to figure it all out.  Really though, aggro control is more than the tank in a good group.

In the end though, play the class you enjoy.  For me though, after 41 lvl's as a paladin, it just keeps getting better and better.
