After I kill 2-3 things my mage pet is out of power.  Is that normal?

What level are you, and what kinds of things are you killing?

There is an AA skill that helps replenish your pet's power. It's used for a self-heal, but it seems to help with power use overall.  Another thing you can do is use Sacrifice once in a while. Your mage pet should hold aggro while it's unable to auto-attack for a short while, and the Sacrifice will replenish its power as well as your own.
