I would like to take this opportunity to officially asking SoE to PLEASE compile a Linux version of the EQ2 client and station launch pad.  Yes, I have hear of other method of running the game, for those that are about reply in a post this, I feel it is about time that we have that option to run Everquest 2 on what ever OS we choose to run.  This by the way could quite possibly open up mac's as well if they are not already, nvidia is already fully support in Linux and depending on distro, it could offer untold performance with our clients.  It really could be done and it could even be offered unofficially, if choose, but please make Linux verison of the client!  pretty please!

thank you from a faithful fan!

The EQ2 client is too heavily reliant on Direct3D and third party libraries for that to be feasible.  They'ld basically have to rewrite the whole thing over from scratch - which people have spend years begging for, as the current model hasn't scaled well with hardware advances.  They already wasted enough man hours moving to HLSL, I don't think they want to double the cost and do it all over again for GLSL for 2% of the population.

It will never happen.

One would expect those running Linux would have some sort of understanding of all this.

Less whine, more Wine.

EQ2 will run great on most Intel Macs and computers that run Linux. How? Dual boot.

Also it runs fantastic on Wine (neither this or your option is what they want though lol)

Personally I find it runs better on Linux under Wine than it does natively on Windows /shrug

It runs pretty well under Wine, I wouldn't say fantastic though. I mainly play in Wine, but I occasionally boot into windows for some reason or other and run EQ2 there, the performance gain is pretty major, at least on my hardware. I average 20-30 FPS in balanced while on Linux, I average 30-60 FPS on high while on windows.

Specs:

Core i5 760 - 2.8GHZ

4GB DDR3

GeForce GTX460 1GB

I agree it will probably never happen, but I'd absolutely LOVE to see EQ2 natively on Linux. Ryzom just released an official Linux client.

You make a lot of claims for someone without a red name. There has been numerous occasions where random players "reject" another players idea, based on their assumed knowledge of what it would take SOE to implement the idea - only for it to actually get done. So unless you work for SOE, I would suggest keeping your foot well clear of your mouth.

It will never happen. Not until Linux has X% market share.

Not until porting EQ2 to Linux doesn't require completely rewriting the game from scratch in OpenGL.

They're still trying to rewrite just a few parts of the EQ2 graphic engine to work well on Windows, let alone other platforms.

And I'll put my foot and mouth where I please.
