5 alts, 4 of them new, and it is impossible to actually get enough items to skillup transmuting before you move into T2 items and are unable to skillup anymore.  Transmuting tapers off around 13-15 and T2 items start at 25, a full 10-12 point gap that is insurmountable without praying for a chest drop off of mobs who rarely do so, or chronomentoring yourself back to 5 and running ANOTHER starting zone.

On that note, I did this last night, and guess what...  ANOTHER GAP!  Yes, it seems that to get the requisite items to transmute in order to skill up to your T3s, you must complete 3 full starting zones.

Broker prices have gotten grossly inflated, demanding 50g for a single levle 4 item.  [Removed for Content]?  Really?  So new players are being encouraged to sell items they already desperately need in order to make money to buy... the items... they desperately need... to skillup a tradeskill... that used to... skillup on crafting items...

Yeah.  Can I get a soda, cause this is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth.

I don't see how what you describe is all that different than the way it was before and since you can skill up on grey transmutes just like you could before, I guess I'm just not seeing a problem. Are you asking for transmuting to have a higher chance to skill up?

If you have Far Seas faction and have one of the mounts that add to harvesting skill, you may find that using the mount helps get past those "gaps".  I had found myself at a similar spot in the mid-20's, then noticed after I bought the mount that my transmuting skill was suddenly higher from the mount bonus, and I was able to move into the next tier of items where I had plenty to continue skilling up on.  And it did seem that having the higher skill from the mount buff seemed to help with skillups.  I don't recall if the harvesting cloak had the same effect as the mount, but I was using both anyways.

You can skill up off level 1 items all the way to 450 can't you? Just mentor down and  mass slaughter a newbie garden.

The prices on the broker are driven by supply and demand. People demand lots of items to transmute, and there's only a finite supply.

You can also transmute MC items, so instead of chronoing and farming mobs for treasure, you could just farm T1 nodes for rares.  This, in fact, might even be an easier approach than farming a zone for drops.  There are plenty of options out there to get the items you need to transmute.  You just have to weigh all your options and not pigeonhole yourself into one mindset.

Of all the replies, this one actually might be the most helpful.  Thank you.  I had forgotten you could melt MC items, since I rarely make them for any reason other than to use immediately.  *eyes his small stockpile of lower tier rares...*  Come to papa.

Yep, you can.  Transmuting is actually a lot easier to skill up now than it used to be because it used to be you'd stop getting skill from items at 100 and you'd have to start making mass amounts of adornments.

As others will mention you can also just harvest a lot of rares, make items out of them, and transmute them.  There's actually many ways you can go about transmuting so it certainly isn't 'unskillable'.

I personally chronomage myself to level 10 and head out to Oakmyst and other zones and start slaughtering everything in sight for an hour or so. Don't bother with Antonica or Commonlands, way tooo many small chests with only requisition quests. While greys skill up more slowly then at level items, it does skill up.  Then I harvest rares and have my baby sage make the highest books she can, getting two goals served in the process. This of course works cause I have a 80+ toon, which I realize the OP may not.  Then when I get really frustrated I prepare to waste a plat buying at level books/equip at no more then 10 gold a piece. Generally 5/6 buys will gain 5 transmute level which equates to one item level at which point, if I'm lucky and still have some of the plat left, I go for the next level. Rinse and repeat. Oh and somewhere in there I xmute all the crap (oops lovely old but no longer used stuff) that cluttering my bank space.

I'm getting exhausted just reading this and realizing that now that everyone can xmute, I'm going to have to do this six more times /sigh

Hm ... I have a new character and her Transmuting is level 100 now.

I can see it being harder for those who already finished alot of the lower areas for the quest rewards.
