Not sure what happened. I used to play EQ2 just fine on my laptop four months back, but then I renewed my subscrip. and downloaded the patch, but now when I walk around my screen begins to turn black. This only happens when I'm in cities or in my guildhall. Tends to happen when I'm in smaller or more graphic heavy places. I think it's my videocard, that may need an update but I don't understand why places I used to go to and be fine, but now I can't walk around my guildhall without being in totally darkness. Any advice would be helpful.

Many updates have occurred in the game the last few months including a graphics one I believe.  Try to update your card and see if that helps...

If not, then I would suggest posting more info about your system as suggested in the *** Read before posting *** post...

Good luck!

If you've updated your graphics card at some point during your time off then that seems like the likely culprit.  Especially with Nvidia cards we have seen some sub-standard driver releases around the time Windows 7 was released.  They're getting better at this point, though, so I would now advise updating to the most recent version available.

Also, does the issue persist if you lower your graphics settings?  Specifically, I'd like to see if completely disabling complex shaders(move the slider all the way to the left until it reads -1) has an effect.  Posting your DXDiag up through the sound devices section would be helpful as well.  Let me know if you have any questions.
