Sometimes when I'm at work my mind wanders and tackles oddball issues, such as how something like Velium (which seems to share a lot of caracteristics of Ice or more likely Heavy-Water Ice probably mana-charged to boot) could be cold-forged.  The answer came to me, in that there are two methods to making a liquid into a solid, for illustrative example, lets for use water. Water can be turned into ice either by lowering the temprature or by massive pressure.

If I remember my Lore correctly (and I could be wrong) the first natural Velium was found in the coldest reaches of Velious (possibly by Al'Akbar [sp]), I wonder if the one who discovered it found it at say a bottom of a fissure where the ice had compressed the velium into a solid and maybe consentrated the ambient mana it might have held.

The discoverer might have then been able to replicate the process, by using a cold AND Pressure forge on velium to form it into solids and shape it.

Please note, this is conjecture on my part.

Al'Kabor has pretty much nothing to do with Velious in any of it's various aspects. The Coldain Dwarves discovered it, and it's a metal that has ice-like metaphysical properties. It's metal through and through. It just looks like ice and feels like ice.

From a pre-release interview for Scars of Velious by IGN sometime in 2000:

IGN PC: Velious will add new Velium weapons and armor sets for each class/race combination. Tell us a little more about these items.

Jeff Butler: Velium is the eternal ice created when Veeshan breathed upon Velious. In the expansion, the mundane Velium weapons will largely replace the Fine Steel- found elsewhere, and can be recognized by their transparent textures. Weapons of Enchanted Velium will be found rarely as treasure. Enchanted Velium is unusual in that it does not demonstrate its enchanted qualities outside the frozen environs of Velious. This will allow the team to make some interesting weapons, but please don't expect to see them commonly in the expansion, due to their limited utility outside Velious.

The emphasis is mine, but it's rather clearly stated that Velium is, in fact, good ol' fashioned god-touched frozen H2O, (read: magical ice). Not some exotic mineral or metal.

Might be useful to one of you

The Fusibility Study By Al’Kabor Part 2:

“The Fusible Ores Fusible Coral Ore: Back while unraveling the secrets behind the demise of the Kedge, I confronted Phinigel Autropos, the last survivor of his kind. While speaking with him and enduring his ill-tempered threats and warnings toward me, I noticed coral-like ore on the reef of his domain. I managed to collect a few samples of this fascinating mineral. This ore is composed of coral reef shells, another substance, not yet defined, and is tightly compressed by the water of the Kedge Keep. Fusible Earthen Ore: When those bumbling gnomes destroyed the Hatch releasing Yael and Dartain, minerals from the Plane of the Underfoot dispersed outward onto the surrounding area. This form of earthen ore is one of the hardest substances currently existing on Norrath and is the source of the earthen golems and elementals who lurk in the Hole. Fusible Igneous Ore: I spent many months researching upon the continent of Kunark. I came across a unique form of lava in the Skyfire Mountains. These mountains have several dormant volcanoes filled with lava waiting to erupt. It was around one of these volcanoes where I found fusible igneous ore. When volcanic lava cools it forms into a hard-form mineral. This mineral is by far one of the hottest minerals on Norrath and requires extreme heat to melt. Fusible Velium Ore: Although he is usually a bothersome individual, the dwarven warrior Thubr Axebringer has assisted me with obtaining samples of velium ore. He managed to find a few rare pieces of it in the Western Wastes of Velious. Velium ore is the most unique ore I have found so far. Its composition relies heavily on the coldness of the area it is found. The cooler the area, the more tightly compressed it is likely to be. In addition, the more compressed the ore is, the greater the likelihood of it being useful in spell research. My research continues . . .”

So Magically charged and compressed ice is indeed a possiblity, probabaly the original stuff might be a strange matter type ice compressed within the body of Veeshan herself. (Of course that means Veeshan's material body would have to be composed of Neutron star material....Ohhh interesting....)

Cusa>>> I had ole' Al's name in parenthasis because I was not sure, so I did not commit it other then as a possibility. I did know that he had indeed researched it.

I stand corrected.

Makes you wonder though, Velium, once found only in Velious, is now found in deposits around Norrath. Then again  Ancient Velium Weapons had the Proc called Velium Shards, perhaps they are the seedling deposits for the veins since they mostly are found near the surface.

•Zekk: I can imagine it getting cold and wet at night, water coming in contact with velium might transmute?

•Enchanted Lands: WHile I don't see it getting as cold there at night, other then seasonally, (The game needs seasons Spammit) I would say that the increased ambient magic (Fey and Void) might supercharge the seed deposits to pull moisture out of the air.

•Steamfront: Doesn't get cold per say, infact I would say this is a pretty warm enviroment with the hotsprings all over the place, perhaps it feeds off mecho-magic and the high-availibity of water to transmute? (Although the wetlands part is another tier of materials)

•Isolated Pockets: Cove of Decay and Bloodskull Valley.

•Velious: the original discovery of velium and probably the place to get the best (T10r?) quallity of the stuff. Might have a name like True-Velium or Ancient Velium....

I wonder what the differences in conditions in the areas would have as an effect on the velium. Would the enchanted lands have a high luster and slight glow, would the Zekk stuff be kind of rusty looking, the steamfront stuff have a off crystaline structure? The Velious stuff might have a slight coldness and bumping it to anything causes a shards effect?

I'm assuming these are refrences to the common T4 gemstone harvestable material. I'm not sure where I read/heard this but I think Domino (our lovely, patient, frantic Tradeskill Dev) has stated that the "velium" found outside of its native home is of extremely degraded quality. Seeded around Norrath as a result of Velious' glacial melt coupled with the Sundering. So it's not exactly the same stuff, but close enough for government work.

Ironically, if velium is as truely "eternal" as it's claimed to be, then exposed islands of the material may be all that's left of certain parts of Velious.
