The only way I can play is in this little bitty window in windowed mode which is really unbearable. Normally I game at 2560x1600 resolution and it will play this resolution and any other if its not in full screen.

I try to alt+ enter to switch to full screen when the game begins, but that causes a crash...every..single...time.

I have SLI disabled(pair of 8800 gtx's 4 gigs of ram) and vista 64 bit. No forced AA or anything..tried all sorts of drivers so I do not believe it's a driver issue. I also disabled a ton of programs running in the background.

I just started my sub and am already thinking of canceling...is this normal for eq2? I'll say this, I haven't seen a game this purty at 2560x1600 resolution in quite some time in full screen mode..too bad it lasts 4 seconds..lol

Right now I have it set at 1920x1200...and it won't let me alt enter to full screen at that resolution either. I also make sure to match my desktop resolution with the games..

I'm at my wits end here. The game is just no fun to play in a little bitty window. Help would be greatly appreciated!

This might be just lucky, but considering I've been trying to play all day in full screen mode and am able to play at 2560x1600 resolution in full screen with no crashes after this change..well, maybe this was it.

I turned off V sync in nvidia control panel

I turned off the gpu accelerator thing

hope this isn't just a fluke.

I'm still having the problem and have more information.

I can only play in a little tiny screen in windowed mode, if I expand the screen in window mode at all, I will crash..I also certainly cannot maximize it or even make it slightly bigger...of course, full screen crashes me right away.

screen goes to black and I can hear music and see a mouse cursor...I crash to desktop while screen now blinks and I can read in the bottom right corner "display driver has stopped responing nvvvvdd(forget the exact word)

Really would appreciate some help. I most likely could solve this problem pretty fast if someone from tech would read this entire thread.

completely uninstall the video driver, boot into safe mode and run a driver cleaner (some are available at www.guru3d.com) once you have done this restart your system, let it finish cleaning up the drivers files then install the latest recommended version for your card.

Might want to temporarily exit your AV realtime scanner also, have seen some of the curent releases interfere with installing drviers.

Yeah, I've done the complete uninstall thing and even downloaded the recommended nvidia from these forums(I've tried quite a few). I've even opened up my pc and put a huge fan on it thinking it was perhaps heat(even though my pu is top notch with a nice fan inside it with a top notch case that breathes well)

I've turned off Aeoro

defragged 4 times

got rid of a lot of programs running in the background and stopped a lot of programs from booting up.

Now I haven't run drive cleaner but I'm not sure what difference this would make at all considering I don't have this problem with other games.

I've never had a AV realtime scanner on this pc and my firewall is turned off.

It's pretty interesting how I can play the game in the little bitty window(in window mode) but if I stretch it bigger, then it crashes to blackscreen(sometimes not right away)

I've also tried cranking down the settings to fastest framerate...it just doesn't matter.

I've never run a drive cleaner before but I would hate for it to hurt my system in some kind of way and delete something it shouldn't.

I personally just think this is a problem between vista 64, 8800 gtx's combined with eq2.

Patch coming soon? Are they aware of this problem?

The driver clean will just clean out old files or files that were missed when you uninstall.

I recommend downloading and installing Drive Sweeper 1.5.5 -- http://www.phyxion.net/

While you are doing that as well, download and install CCleaner; this will also take care of your registry files -- http://www.ccleaner.com/

Next download the latest or EQ2 recommended Nvidia drivers, don't install yet.

Finally get the DirectX 9.0c (August 2007) redistributable version. EQ2 requires this and it is not included in dirext10, installing it won't harm your system, don't install yet -- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en

Once you've got all of those. Uninstall ALL Nvidia products, nvidia drivers, nvidia performance, nvidia physx, nvidia system monitor and update (you may or may not have some of these products).

Restart your pc and enter Safe Mode, holding or pressing F8 when your pc first starts to boot up should bring up the option to enter safe mode. While in safe mode run Driver Sweep, check the boxes for nvidia (there may be one or two) as well as the option for physx (if it's there). Once you've done that, run CCleaner, there should be a tab for registry clean.

After you've done all that, restart your pc again and then install DirectX and your nvidia drivers.

Also make sure to delete the following files / folders in your EQ2 directory.

Cache Folder

eq2_recent.ini

eq2_default.ini

Everquest2.exe

eq2.ini

server.character.ini

The patcher will download new ones for you.

I just recently came back to the game after a long break and was experiecning crashing (with no error report) using a nvidia 9800gt card, after trying many many MANY fixes, this seems to have worked for me. no crashing or anything for the last couple of weeks.

hope it works, keep us posted

Ouch, I tried to follow what you typed but I think I messed something up pretty bad and hopefully didn't screw up everything on my pc.

I can't even connect to the internet now...ouch..I'm on my lap top..god knows what else I deleted that I shouldn't have..

I think I got myself into quite a situation now..

It shouldn't have done anything to your internet connection. check your device manager to see if anything is flagged, like your network card; might have to reinstall that. how do you connect to the net?

If, before you ran everything, you backed up, restoring that should put you back where you were before.

If you tried to connect to the internet while in safe mode, you won't be able to, safe mode only loads essential drivers for trouble shooting purposes.

I called my isp provider on the phone and it was deleted...so I won't be using drivesweeper or anything like it ever again. It's highly debatable whether doing something like that would help much anyway really...now especially if it's going to delete my Nic software causing me headache?

Uh, no..lol

I just rolled my pc back to yesterday so everything is ok now, it's like it never happen.

The fact that no dev has responded to this thread tells me they know about the problem but have no clue as to why it is happening. Either that or they are lazy..

Either way anyone with a 8800 gtx or vista shouldn't be playing this game at all..It's dissapointing that nobody on the tech team responded to this thread and really, says a lot about the direction of this game...and this game has a monthly charge?

Lame..very lame..there are some free mmo's with better customer service than this.

Either way if this problem doesn't go away in a week or so I'll be canceling my sub that I just started.

Except for the minor hiccup of your system not working, did you manage to install directx 9.0C?

When it comes to pc fixes, especially with online games, there is a certain amount of patience that is needed. the amount of people who play the game on very different systems and settings, takes some time to offer support. try not to get frustrated or lash out, it's one way to not get effective help.

Very true.

It's just very frustating and I lose my patience sometimes especially when I went through everything I did to fix this problem and I haven't heard from a tech person yet.

I do notice also that I, and many, many others are having problems with warhammer as well. I don't crash in Warhammer often but when I play at 2560x1600 resolution I do...and it's a blackscreen, same type of of thing. So I game at 1920x1200 and the game problem is pretty much solved. However, this problem is much worse in eq2 for some reason I'm not sure.

My other games don't get my problems. I'm not really sure what to think at this point. Right now I'm downloading eq2 on my notebook(which is a monster gaming notebook that I connect to a large screen lcd)..that system never crashes in warhammer, but its a completely different set-up being vista 32 bit with 8800M SLI.

I take very good care of this gaming machine and I'm not sure what to do now. The latest version of direct 9.0 I have, but I'll download it again just for the heck of it.

right now I am trying to figure out how to uderclock my 8800 gtx as I believe that could be the problem. Someone built this gaming rig for me and I am pretty sure they overclocked it for me. I am hearing that could cause a problem in Warhammer and eq 2.

But right now I am trying desperate things really as the obvious ones just aren't working.

And everyone that responded in this thread to help, thank you so much..hopefully the situation, somehow, will be resolved soon.

Ok, I think I may have solved my problem.

I got the information from someone in warhammer that was having problems(many, many are) and I think(knock on wood) this has solved mine.

I went ahead and downloaded nvidia system tools which I can't believe I didn't do before. I had the nvidia control panel, but this gives you a lot more control as to what is going on with your gaphics card.

This is what I did...I went to the adjust image settings with preview and saw my performance was set on quality(the highest possible) I went ahead and cranked that down to the middle which was balanced after clicking on"use my preference emphasizing"..

 then I fired up eq2.

I went in the game ran as administrator, and ran in compatibility for windows service pack 2, like I always do. I set the resolution to 1920x1200 and window mode.

Game fired up fine in small window mode, then I expanded the screen to full, this normall causes a crash..well, it didn't this time..played for like 15 minutes.

Next I'm going to try to play n full screen mode at 2560x1600 and see how that goes. But I'm happy right now as gaming at 1920x1200 with things cranked up a little, things look great and the game plays great.

again I have 4 gigs of ram(2 on each stick), 8800 gtx SLI(turned off) vista 64 bit and 2 cores.

Thanks everyone, and I hope this helps someone else that has this problem.

Well, I still crash in full screen mode playing eq2. However, the problem is solved playing in an EXPANDED window mode so all is good as I prefer playing in this mode anyway as the game looks just as good and enables you easy access to the web.

Full screen mode is still a complete crash. Co-incidentally, warhammer is the same way. I can play in warhammer a lot longer in full screen mode before a crash than eq2. But warhammer never crashes in window mode.

So all is good and I found a way to work around the crashes just by playing in window mode...that expands fully.

Well, I thought the problem was solved but I had another blackscreen after playing a a few hours here and there...so there is just some kinda issue with 64 bit vista and 8800's.

I'm loving this game though so I'm gonna endure it and just play on my lap top which has no problems at all with eq2.(vista 32 8800M, 4 gigs)

Hopefully this issue with 8800's and 64 bit vista will be worked out soon.

Sorry for the delay in response.  I was training new tech support reps most of last week and I only had a few minutes here and there to check the forums.

First off, I know that you're using an 8800, but what company manufactured it?  Did they overclock it in any way?  We'll probably want to check to make sure that it isn't an unstable overclock or burnt out hardware.  If you haven't already then you'll want to run a graphics stress test such as 3dmark.  You can download that for free at the following location:

http://www.futuremark.com/download/

Besides that, there are 2 options I want you to activate in the game preferences.  Both are located in option menu under Display > Performance.  Make sure both of these options are enabled:

'Reuse Vertex Buffers'

'Use Multi-Core Support'

Let us know if the problem persists after trying all of the above.

I think I found a way to get this game to work(maybe) but doing the above didn't get it going.

My crashing the last few days has become worse and worse recently to the point where on my desktop(8800 gtx SLI, e6600 dual core, vista 64 bit) but I disable SLI for eq 2 and warhammer) the game has become totally unplayable so I'm only playing on my notebook now. I crashed every 2 minutes no matter what the settings just about.

Nevertheless, I would rather play this game on my desktop and I did exactly what you wrote. I aleady had multicore checked but not the other one. No change, still crashing. I ran the 3d test, everything seemed fine.

Now here's the good news. I went inside my nvidia control panel and underclocked my graphics card.(it was on factory settings, which may have been overclocked, not sure) under device settings.

I cranked down my core clock to 495 Mz down from I think the factory settings were at 700 or so?

Then I cranked down my memory clock a little and

And my shaders down a little..

Then I noticed my Cooling Geforce GPU was factory set at 60%. I figured that was odd, wouldn't cooler be better? So I cranked that up to about 91%.

then saved.

Odd enough I fired the game up almost daring it to crash at 2560x1600 resolution with everything cranked up to max, in window mode.(I might try full screen) I still ran as administrator and xp 2 compatible.

Game not only didn't crash but seemed to actually run better. I'm assuming this could also be my problem with warhammer as well? I'm not sure

Played for 20 minutes and the game ran flawlessly with very little hitching. I turned down the shadows a bit but kept everything else maxed at 2560x1600 resolution. Man, then that baby really flew.

This game, for being as old as it is, is a real beauty at high settings and scales unbelievably well. I'm not sure how being such an old game. Looks better than WOW, and even warhammer(warhammer has some odd character models, and some dulled out colors, and poor lighting(that being said, warhammers graphics> WOW.

So I'm keeping my fingers crossed here. I'm just wondering at this point if my 8800 gtx factory settings were overclocked and that was giving me problems? Or they were just regular, and eq 2 being an older game, just didn't like those regular 8800 gtx settings and tweaking them down a bit made the game love them.

I'm not sure. I'm just hoping the problem is now resolved and this just isn't a total coincidence. I did notice turning down my cards ability(either underclocking or getting rid of overlock, not sure if factory settings were overclocked or not) made it actually run eq 2 better. And maybe my eyes are decieving me but it seems my monitor(that supports 60 and has updated drivers) flickers a lot less now.

Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping this solves my warhammer and eq2 problem.

Great, I'm glad to hear that it's running now without the crash.  Some manufacturers will overclock the card when selling, and that may have been the case here.  There's also a certain amount of variance in those chips that can make even stock speed unstable under certain conditions.  Let us know if the problem comes back.

After further experimenting, it's clear now by turning down my 8800 gtx settings in the nvidia control panel under device settings the crashing has stopped. I even tested this out and turned the settings back on factory settings and the game almost immediately crashed.

So cranking down core clock(between 400-500), shaders a bit, and memory clock a little and then saving..has fixed the problem. I also upped my cooling to 90%.

So if anyone else is crashing to blackscreen and has a 8800 gtx, this will solve their problem. I'm not even sure vista has anything to do with this.
