How can you identify what items should just be sold to vendors? I have been having a difficult time determining if something should be held onto for a later quest, can be used in crafting, or is valuable in some way or another.

I hate to compare systems but item DBs for FFXI and WoW were quite good at identifying items used in crafting or served some other purpose. WoW would label vendor fodder with a grey name (there was even a wonderful addon that would sell all grey items at a vendor with a single button).

Am I missing something or do I need to continue being a pack rat and keep everything that I pick up?

Normally, if an item is used in a later quest, say the lore and legend series, it says on the tooltip "used in the quest Lore and Legend : X"  "Can be studied to learn more about X"Also, if you examine an item (by right clicking on it), it gives more detail on it than just mousing over it.As far as I know, the items that are ".....treasure" are all vendor trash. You cant sell tradeskill items, they all have "no value" on them.Drops from mob corpses, unless they are status items, which is stated on them "may be handed in to X", or lore and legend items, which again, is stated on them, are mostly vendor trash.Loot that is of some use is generally in a chest of some kind when you kill the mob.I use profitUI addon, and if in doubt, I click the link for either EQ2Wikia, or Allakhazam to check the itemOoooh..and, most of the time it has "Treasured" on it if it is of some use.

Items that are "treasured" may be worth brokering.  Depending what it is, it might get you more than the npc price.Items that are called "Looted" treasure (such as looted curiosity treasure) is only good for selling to the broker (but usually is worth a good amount).Items that are "uncommon" may be brokered, but it is unlikely anyone would want them.  These are usually things like armor with really low stats.  You can usually safely sell these.Items that are "legendary" or "fabled" are keepers.  You can almost always get more from the broker for these than from an npc."treasured" body parts from monsters are usually quest items for Legend and Lore quests.  Collect a set for yourself and put the rest on the broker.  Some have value, some not so much.

OMG!!

Treasured items that are tradeable put on the broker, the stuff that is below level 20 sells like hotcakes!! you can put them up for a few gold each and they sell fast!

Basic rules treasured or better put on the broker

If it's a LnL item check the broker and see if it's worth putting up there, some cases it's exceptionally good to put up there.

Collections again check the broker some cases it's really good other cases not worth your time.

If the item you got says something like "looted antique treasure: blahblahblah" then that is a vender item.

Also check the stickies one of them talks about making money, definatly worth your time to read it. The economies on these servers are more mature so that means you make money a lot easier In my opinion.

This could be restating the obvious but I'll add in a few more just in case.

If it can be used in tradeskilling, it will say so when you examine the item. If it's your trade, keep it, otherwise it goes on the broker. You may not get much for it, but you'll get nothing at all from the npc vendors.

If its a spell or combat art book of any kind, it either gets used by you, put on the broker, or if you are in a guild, placed in the guild bank. It's general practice to place at least some of the adepts you collect in the guild bank for others to use, and of course you are meant to make use of any some one else has placed in there.

If the item says 'offers quest xxx', either 'read' it to pick up the quest or trash it. It will be no trade.  It will say 'can be examined to learn more about xxx' if its an L&L item, and will the word 'Collection' somewhere in the text if its a collection items. As the person mentioned above, sell those if you don't use them.

Everything else I can think of has already been mentioned above.

If the item description says "curiosity treasure" or similar, then you know it's pure vendor fodder. If the item is for a quest, then the description will say so.If the item is a material for crafting, then the description will say so.If the item is for earning status in the city, then the description will say so.If the item has a rarity of "Treasured" or higher, then it may be of interest to other players (if priced right).  However, you may end up selling it to vendors anyway.Generally, items that are "Legendary" or "Fabled" are always worth selling to other players.
