xp stalls on loading zone server goes to char select

I am running Windows XP and there have been no system updates since I last successfully played last weeked. However there have been eq2 updates.

When I press play on either the character select screen or the origional start page is goes through its usual steps but then nothing happens on Loading zone server. after a long pause I get dumped back in the character select screen. Any suggestions help?

I did do a complete rescan as suggested in another forum and I am running xp not vista as was also suggested in another thread.
