Is it just me or does Neriak have more than a passing resemblance to the underground gnome home city in Vanguard. First time I zoned in and began exploring I experienced this tremendous feeling of deja vú and realised that it arose from those Vanguard zones. I wonder if the SOGA developers have been doing a little moonlighting for Sigil? SMILEY

SOGA are the team that did the Fallen dynasty adventure pack the alternate models and had the first pass on the design for Neriak hence the more asian (and personally wonderful) look to these things.

No. I think Sigil (BMQ) "stole" the idea and style from Everquest 1. Not EQ2 from Sigil. Do you know EQ1 ?

So SOGA designed Neriak? That explains a lot. I was wondering why a fallen dynasty model was used in the newbie area. Seems extremely out of place, and lazy. But what's new?

Actually it reminded me of EQ1's Neriak, which is good since it's supposed to. Was neat to go into buildings I recognized and even see the glowing eye had survived. SMILEY

No. SOGA did "first pass" work on concept art created by SOE.

Yeah it is almost identical to the Fallen Dynasty, even in Nerial there are human children and they look like they are visiting from the Fallen Dynasty. I felt compelled to ask them if they would like a Hershey Bar.

Doesn't look anything like the gnome city in vanguard at all.... but it resembles the Neriak in EQ1 quite a bit SMILEY (even the glowing neon floaty designs in the waterfalls) Reusing appropriate models and items is not lazy, it's good use of development time to release new content imho.

Umm no

I think its copied from EQ1, you know the original place NERIAK existed. That gives too much credit to Vanguard.

Have you played EQ1?

Vanwhat? You have to be kidding me - does Brad have to hold up a big sign of 'I surrender, I clearly do not have an idea what MMO consumers these days want' from losses on his 'Vanguard' pet project that so dramatically failed before people realise that there really is nothing in that huge dungheap of a game that anyone would want to copy 'anywhere' if they wish to be a success? Neriak is based on 'Neriak' which happened to be in the game that preceded EQ2. Was called Everquest 1 actually. It looks quite a lot like 'that' SMILEY

Although for the kids they should have made them Youngling Dark elves even if they are in the New Foreign Quarter.

only thing that reminds me of vanguard is my dogs crap outside whenever I walk him

But, seriously...no it actually looks like the original Neriak style from EQ. If anything, Brad took the idea from EQ...after all ...he desperately tried to make another EQ clone.

That look actually predates Fallen Dynasty by ...oh....seven years.  Neriak always had an oriental twist to it. It's nothing new. You guys should play EQ....then you'll see what Im talking about

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a...936/3rdGate.jpg ^^Link to where all the sexy DE Necromancers & Shadowknights started in Neriak Third Gate.  If that isn't an Asian influence...  Was fun going back to take that shot.  *Whimsical*

that's what Neriak is suppose to look like! It's from the EQ1 Neriak. Has nothing to do with SOGA

Resembles the city from the original Everquest. Good JoB SOE & thank you!  As a note I just got a friend to play from the original EQ. She was playing WOW.  The timing was perfect.

Neriak was lifted from EQ1. Not entirely successfully. I was hoping for something more. These are darkelves you know. They have art, culture, power. Frankly it should rival Felwithe in beauty and size but edgier and more dangerous. To me it looks like a handful of buildings in a cave. Obviously having to rely on so many non Teir'Dal and Arasai has taken a toll on the city.

I think the zone is brilliant. It's certainly one of the more beautiful cities in Norrath.

Neriak and Mekalia are nothing alike architectually, though Neriak and Mekalia are probably the most spectacular starting cities in their respective games.  Both are visually stunning and make heavy use of lighting effects, especially bloom.  Mekalia more resembles a gnome version of Chinese New Year gone horribly horribly wrong...
