Are they powerful enough to let you solo in any reasonable fashion?  I'm talking about the initial summon spirit companion in the talent tree.

Thanks, W

They will help you,  but you must not think that the pet is a tank.   You must take agro, and then let the pet provide a little extra DPS by hitting on the backside of the mob.   If the pet takes agro it will die.   I don't think there is any circumstance where leaving either of the "protect"  buttons pressed on the pet control panel will do anything but get the pet killed.   Engage the mob,  send pet, take 2 steps back so pet is behind mob.   Continue the still rather slow battle.

Your pet will never be like a conjurer or necro pet.

The buffs/wards in the various aa lines he provides are what he is best for, not his uber (lol) melee dps. He won't 'always' die when he gets agro, at least mine doesn't. But it is better to treat him as if he would and try to prevent him getting agro in the first place. He'll hit more often, and do more good if he is behind the mob anyhow.

AA in general will greatly increase your soloing power as a mystic, including the benifits from the pooch.

Think of the mystic pet as a DoT of a long length, as opposed to a primary tanking pet like a conj or necro gets.  I always set the pet not to attack, and send it in manually after I definitely have agro on the mob.

I still play the "oldfashioned" STR line and the dog heals us both while soloing. With 25% every 4th bite procs a ward. The dog is also an excellent puller when soloing or in small groups. Just ward him and send him in. He cant build much hate when you call him back as early as possible and it is easy to taunt of with a single hit (i am melee spec'ed tho)

This I suppose is a different question for me but very similar to this thread so posting it here.

Although I love my alt Mystic (22) and DogDog, I am struggling to level at any reasonable speed, and am kind of stuck between back end of Antonica and front end of Thundering Steppes, struggling to kill 21 and 22's in a long drawn out battle usually.

Assuming that I want DogDog to be as useful as he can be, cos I mostly solo so group stuff is not uber important, but I have the wards obviously, whats the best way I can go with AA's to most help DogDog to help me?

And I want him to look like the defiler one, I can't even stroke mine, my hand disappears, and I sneezed on him the other day and he died!

For the early levels i suggest to leave dogdog alone and just care that he is behind the mob. I d put my first AA into the AGI Line to get those crit hits and i would put points into the mystic tree to turn the casts into melee attacks. That way you will kill equal con mobs quite fast. Once you got  100% crits and yor melee damage is good enough, you might want to go the str line of the shaman all the way down. Thats where the dog gives you haste and warding and he doesnt die that much after you are prophet.
