Just started playing when KOS came out.I noticed this has been asked several times before. However every post seemed to be a lil dated.I switched back and forth between the forums, and it seems alot of rangers are complaining about a significant dps nerf.Has this shifted the tide any?Is the only difference that ranger is primarily ranged, and assassin is primarily melee?Any input/suggestions are appriciated.Pardon the name too, i think i just mashed the keyboard when checking out the trial. you have 2 different types of gameplay. just have a look at the classes, do you like someone with a bow, a hunter, or an assassin with 2 murderous blades?it's only a kind of personal preference, I never would play a ranger, cause I live my assassin.

If you want DPS I would have said a ranger before KoS.  They took a major DPS hit because of the proc adjustments and now I can fairly easily out DPS a ranger. I use my bow quite a bit, for kiting, pulling and extra DPS.  I would say assassin simply because I am one and I honestly can't play any other classes after playing an assassin.

It honestly depends on your play style.  If you enjoy soloing more, I would say Assassin right now.  After KoS, my Assassin can solo things my Ranger can't.  If you enjoy grouping more, I'd say it really doesn't matter.  Either can group, and they both have an easier time with it than they do with soloing right now.  If you want to have the knowledge that you're near the top of the DPS ladder, I'd say go with Assassin for now.  If you don't care about that and think you'd just have more fun with a character who runs around and shoots things with a bow on top of having to melee, then definitely go with Ranger.  If you're more about being up close and personal with the enemy, then go with an Assassin.

Or... You could make one of each and play them both until one wins your interest more. (This from an alt-o-holic.  No matter who gets nerfed, I'm bound to still have at least one class I enjoy playing. SMILEY )

Disclaimer: The either/or argument between any two classes is subject to change at any time. SMILEY

my input would be don't decide based on playstyle, who solos better, who does more dps, who is more useful on raids or any of the myriad of other common reasons brought up for chossing one class or another. there's this warning that pops up everytime you log into the game that says"game play may change"or something similar. All I can say is 'ain't it the truth'. what sounds cooler to you ranger or assassin?  what would you sense would be more fun? make the decision that way and you won't be disappointed. nothing is forever in this game when it comes to balance or who's on top, it's enjoying yourself that makes this a fun hobby.

Here's my unbiased viewpoint,  Since kos an average assassin can out-dps a great ranger by about 15-25%.  Ranger is a far more expensive class due to arrows and 3/4 of your spells (all the ranged ones) are useless, power-draining, for little dps gain over your melee auto-attack.  So GO assassin unless you like playing a broken class.

I wouldn't make the decision based on who is doing more DPS right now, because that kind of thing can change at any time. I would choose based upon which style you like more. Do you like being up close and in on the action, or standing on the sidelines plucking away at your bow? Also assassins are total badassesSMILEY

If you aren't passionate about assassins, don't go there, you'll get more overall utility by taking a brig/swashbuckler. Assassin are extremely streamlined and single-purposed characters
