It's just for fluff and fun.  So you really aren't missing anything since it really has no useful purpose.

Actually, Mine's saved my [Removed for Content] any number of times :smileyhappy:

it seems that they can occasionally gain aggro of a mob, similar to Wizard lvl 20 Familiars.  this is especially useful if you're running from a group of mobs and he gains aggro, easily enough time to leg it.

I summon him up every time i solo now, tho in a group he has no function other than to reduce your FPS :smileywink:

And he follows you, squeaks, and calls you master!  What more do you want?  That in itself rules.  Also its taken aggro
maybe a dozen or so times, of which at least twice it would've been the end.  Good 'ol rat.

Yeh, You can evade a mob to your rat. Very handy if you get agro'd by something you don't want to fight. Also, it's good if you like to pull with arrows because you can then evade and you can still get off one of your back hits.

It's a rat, it squeaks and follows you round, and it's cute.  One time I summoned a rat and it was called Loser.  What more could you ask for?

Actually that's just a bug with pets holding agro longer than they ought to, at least that's what some dev said long ago. At the point when the encounter would normally break and the mob's give up pursuit, pets won't give up their agro and thus reengaged the fight. It looks like they're saving you, but in fact you had already reached a safe point. One thing I'd found it useful for is on raids, parking the pet where you believe the extent of the mob's AE is then stand behind it. If the pet is killed, you know it was too close. If it lives, you know you can stand behind it to be out of range.

it is not meant to do anything except follow you around  nothing more.  period.  if it is getting aggro, that is a bug.  if you BELIEVE this is a benefit of the rat, you are wrong.  period.  It does one thing:  nothing.  period.  end of story.  end of thread.

Well, actualy.. you are wrong, because bug or not.. that's what it does. So if this is a bug, then untill it gets fixed that's what it's going to do. You are able to evade to your pet, just like rangers can evade to their bird.
