![]() Well guys just dinged 55 last night and got Thorny Trap and Stream of Arrows right after. Took me awhile to get the rares but back to the point I hear people in game talk about Thorny Trap all the time but here on the boards when I do a search I just get alot of people writing about the nerf to it. So my question is what is the best way to utlilize this spell? Is it a group or solo CA? From what I can tell it looks very usefull would just like some ideas on putting it to good use. ![]() can be used in a group so a bunch of adds get snared and then the tank can pull one mob at a time. When you solo its the same thing, snare the mobs and then blast a mob until its either dead of snare breaks and comes to you. Kill, rinse repeat The only nerf for thorny trap is it no longer roots true epic mobs. A slight pain with trap is the mobs need to be close together in order to snare them all otherwise the first mob gets snared and the ones trailing behind can come to you and then proceed to beat the living wotsit out of you :smileytongue:

Kasman, First off, its sad to see that you missed 3 levels of thorny trap asit is a lvl 52 ca..not 55.Other Rangers probably have found unique things to do with this ca...Im only lvl 54so still experimenting with it and pretty basic but my main use is for multi encounters. Find a grp of 3-5 (have done up to 4 lvls above me solo con or down arrows). Sneakup as close as you can get assumming at least one sees thru invis and place itin a semi straight line from where you intend to attack from. After its down..just backup to max bow range and Fire away.I like to start with Natural selection as its a good grp attention hitter anddoes good damage. Also since not all are within the damage area its nota waste. Now after natural selection, they fly/run over the trap and are trapped(rooted) for up to i believe 2 mins with a break on damage. However they are nowall closely packed together and this is where a good storm of arrows shot just ripsthem all apart....Pick off survivors one by one if any.You also may get one that will break immediately after trap goes off but they areslowed somewhat so just target them for a single triple shot and short melle ifneeded. Then back to the trapped grp. Remember, the trap lasts for a long timeso dont need to rush..deal with immediate threats and youll be fine.I would also like to see some ingenious Ranger uses with this ca.

Set trap at max ranged art distance, that way you can hit them a few times on the way in before they get trapped, giving you time to back off and let your big hitters refresh, also have noticed that it generates a lot of hate, so if you have a situation where say your tank is a conj pet, if the pet looks about to die, set the trap between the mob and the conj, mob gets trapped and switches attention to you, giving conj time to summon a new pet

I guess I did not post correctly... I just got this last nite I did however know it was 52 not 55 I meant I did not have the rare to make it till now. It is not a big deal considering I went from 50 to 55 in like 5 or 6 days. I took a very long break from EQ2 long before DoF came out. So have been playing catch up and doing lots of xp grinding. Would be faster to 60 but cant play that much the wife would kill me. And this way I get sorta a chance to stop and smell the roses. But when it comes to 50 plus levels I am a noob again and not too proud to admit I need some advice concerning these levels and CA's. Thanks again for the advice

![]() Be careful about using it a group with other pets. In my experience, it gets canceled any time a necro or conj pet walks thru it. The same is true with other "limited pets" such as the Warden's protecting grove, and the Furys ring of fire. I'm not sure if Swarm pets cancel it or not. I've used it while soloing to great effect against groups of Raptors in Sinking sands. It's basically crowd control.

I am so GLAD I read this! I thought I was losing my mind the other night when we were taking down Moonchild. I always plant a trap to catch the ghosties and the other night my trap kept disappearing and I though maybe it's because several guys were standing in front of me while we were setting up...so I had them clear out but the Conj's pet was doing the ballistic dance and wouldn't get outta my way. Finally got it planted and I caught my ghosties...but grrr. lol Bah. Well, that explains why sometimes my trap disappears for no reason. Thanks!

![]() in my experience, any pet (conj, necro, charmed) will destroy the trap, so you gotta watch those. That being said, I personally love the skill. I use it all the time, especially when soloing. It let me solo the entire Peacock Club quest up to the Dark One (joined with a warlock in my guild on same part from there on). Honestly, it lets me solo in places I'd otherwise not have a prayer of soloing. It's a great skill to add to your arsenal.

![]() This is how I do it and I beleive this will max your damage the best. Also, I ahve master Storm, Ad3 Natural Selection. Place the trap at max bow distance and go invis. Sneak up to the group of nasties you want to kill and use natural selection. Then as you run backwards use Storm. It is importnat to use storm before they hit the trap or you will break the snare on all of them. After storm is used, continue backpedalling to run them over the trap. Once they are snared back pedal to max distance. Take a breath. I usually then choose the hardest mob of the group ^ or ^ if there is one in there and use Stream on it until it is dead. Then pick off the other members with Triple Fire (on mob with most health) then Precise Shot (58 CA) on second most. Then whatever is left - debilitating, miracle, confusion, snaring..etc. The best thing is thorny trap is only a 1 min 45 sec reset and by the time the fight is done, it is almost refreshed!

![]() Simply put, as it has been stated already, the mobs have to be close together. What you do is find a group of mobs 3-5, I've even done 7. Target the MOB FURTHEST AWAY FROM THE TRAP FIRST. Get at Max bow range for the furthest mob, and plant your trap. You can start however you wish, some nice shots would be Storm of Arrows, Snaring Shot (My preference, as now they'll all be snared or rooted), and just pick them apart one at a time. The Trap is also a DoT, so even when the root breaks and they're snared, the trap still does some damage to them. WORD OF WARNING: Using Thorny trap somewhere where roaming NPC's who are non-aggro are, is a REALLY BAD IDEA (mind travels back to all those stupid monks roaming around the harpies on the Giant Bansai Island in PoF..../swear) Also good to use when you're pulling named mobs that aren't epic, like a lot of quest finishing mobs, and named monkey in Maj'Dul springs to mind... I've never used it to gain hate in a group, what on earth would I want hate for? I have spells to alleviate hate, I don't want a mob on me, never have, never will, let the WEEZARD tank it! I used mine just the other day to take down Ghost of Dukar for the Ring of Fate quest. Also use it to go through Ancient's Table, among other places I'm not suppose to be. lol

We use it a lot on raids to catch the non-epic adds that come with an encounter, as we only have a mezzer about 20% of the time. As noted above, the Moonchild encounter is an excellent example. We usually have 2 or 3 rangers drop traps to catch the mobs, depending on the encounter and pull formation.Again, make sure the pet players know to keep their pets away.Also, other thorny traps will break both traps and make them disappear, so don't place your trap too close to another ranger's.

![]() Most fun I ever had with Thorny Trap was down in the Silent City raid area. Had our Monk a couple of healers and two rangers vs the x4 Captians. Took some deaths to work out our tactic's but once we did it was fun time. Definitely not for the feignt (sp ?) of heart but if you like a challange you should give it a try. Nothing puts a smile on your face more then five players using team work to take out x4 mobs :smileyvery-happy: It's also fun to use when duo'ing Poets.

![]() Ok really got a chance to play with this last night... And I love this CA dad gum if I dont feel like superman with this bad daddy. I learn some lessons took some dirt naps but after working the timing pathing and roaming non agro mobs pathing and such, I was able to solo the 58 ^^^ Cyclops in PoF. Now to be fair I was stacking 3 poisons along with using the trap. But all in all the adrinaline rush was awesome. I dont know how many times the mob got right on top of me and it was like a wholly crapp who is going to take the dirt nap first. I cant see this as a reliable place to solo at my level consistently but I just wanted to see if I could do it. Prob duo'ing there would be excellent. I am loving the ranger and all we can do, post 50 was def worth coming back for.

![]() I love that you can plant this using sneak and it not break sneak, works great in Maj'Dul when the raiders take the city over. I plant it right by them away from any townfolks that might be wandering by... Lol like that will happen cause they are dead if they wonder too close to the raiders. Anyways this is great for bunching up the groups of 3 and taking them out. I'll have to see if it works well against the one's that take over the pit fighter area. I love that ring event just hoping to get a master drop there someday. On a side note there in the pit fighter training area someone told me after you kill the one boss up the climbable wall another can spawn up top of the next building. You have to jump on the AC looking things to get up there but i have never seen a spawn up there.

Let me ask a question anyone notice that our poison say Translucent Phantasmic Visions has been cutting out like after a few shoots with the bow. Yesterday I swear it would wear off after taking on two mobs. This happened several times yesterday, just curious if anyone else has noticed this?
