Does weapon type matter? I noticed I can use things like Sneak Attack and Backstab with a whip but a friend mentioned that attacks are based on either slashing or piercing and you need to use a particular weapon type to get the most out of an ability?Does weapon damage affect the amount of damage special attacks do? Is it like EQ1 where it was sometimes better to pick a slower weapon with higher damage and worse overall straight dps (with no special abilities used) because of the way the weapon damage modified the damage of the special attacks? Thanks for any answers you can give.

Weapon type does not matter per skill.  You can backstab with a sword, whip, dagger, spear or any other weapon we can use and you will get the same damage.  One place that weapon type does matter is if the mob is resistant towards a certain type of weapon (like skeletons resistance to piercers).  I switch between piercing and slashing weapons all day long to keep my 2 skills maxed and there is no difference on specials in either of them.  Specials are based off of your skill level on the particular skill.  If you use a 1 damage weapon, Hidden Shiv for example will still hit for 200+ damage.

To the best of my knowledge, the two phrases"you need to use a particular weapon type to get the most out of an ability" is falseand"Does weapon damage affect the amount of damage special attacks do" the answer is no.Although weapon tier does affect CA (combat art) chance-to-hit, weapon dmg/delay has no bearing (that I've ever heard a dev confirm/deny or a player log parse confirm/deny) whatsoever on CA damage.I did my best during beta (and now, defending those conclusions post release) to log and parse these things, and the above is accurate, from the information I've personally collected, for my characters. YMMV.
