The only thing I really know about the Ratonga is that they had a brief appearance in EQ1, so they aren't a "new race". They lived in a dragon's tomb (I forget whos, but at the entrance were the Phase Spiders who dropped that yummy, yummy carapace) and attacked any intruders who trespassed into their realm, so they could possibly have worshipped the dragon there, or they just found their way there (Probably the later). Not much, but it's something.

Actually those were the Paebala and the Chetari. They are different species of Ratmen, just like how the Ratonga and the Roekillik. They're all different from each other and not related. The Ratonga never appeared in EQlive. Ever. |

![]() I was under the impression that the rats that appeared in all of the cities in EQLive (around 2004) were somehow connected to the future appearance of the Ratonga in EQ2. I thought it was hinted at on EQ2's official web site while it was still under development but I could wrong and just ate some bad cheese. :smileywink:

![]() A brief history of the Ratonga: As we are well aware dragons are large reptiles. As with most reptiles dragons love to eat their food while it is still mostly alive. Of all the foods that dragons enjoyed nothing was more loved than the rat. The only problem is that they were so gosh darn small that it would take hundreds of them just to make a decent snack. One very inventive dragon named “Walt the Great Animator” was particularly obsessed with the fresh nutty taste of rat meat. He created gigantic farms that spanned areas ten times the size of the Enchanted Lands to raise his rats on. Walt gained great notoriety for his delectable rats and eventually had to expand his operation. He sought out some cheap swamp land in the subtropics to build his empire. The early days were rough, the heat and humidity of this subtropical swamp land produced extremely large plants and insect life that would either eat his rats or if fed to the rats too often the rats would begin to grow in size themselves. Once Walt was able to attain the perfect balance to ensure that the local wildlife would not consume his livestock and that the livestock would not become too large rendering their flesh tough and hard to chew Walt kicked up his fee and took a nap. As Walt slumbered many years passed (a dragon nap is apparently quite long) and the effects of the rats new subtropical diet began to have unexpected effects. Once Walt awoke he was astonished to find his prized livestock was gone. The only thing that remained was a poorly written note that read: “Worries not Lord Walt the Greater Animator we’s will meets agains for it’s is a smalls world after alls, yes?” So there you have it the Lore and Legend behind dinner… I mean Ratonga

Ratonga don't actually have any lore, it is just easier to say they are mysterious.

![]() I don't know much either, just the few things such as they came upon Norrath when the world cracked from the Shattering ... I think. Try visiting your local Mage Tower for the book on the History of Ratonga ... well only in Freeport I think. |

![]() Well I don't think anyone can blame me if I said I don't feel like typing up the whole description found in the Prima stategy guide. If you can get your hands on one, you will find a great deal of info on each race. |

![]() I love the ratonga. They have a rich, dark history of which only what they want you to know is readily available. Mysterious is a good way to think of them. Cautious and clever might be another. And if I said any more, Vhalen would toss me into the Wheel of Vaniki to suffer torment forever and ever. |

The Ratonga background has leaked into the community. You can find bits and pieces of it somewhere on the History and Lore board. What the real question should be is, what are the Ratonga currently up to? The Ratonga are highly intelligent, highly organized and highly cunning. Even a player Ratonga would have some knowledge of any vast plot the entire race was in on. But it would be too early to release such information.. if such a plot even existed.

In otherwords, start killing the fury little plague spreading cheese nibbling bastages before they can cause any trouble. And while were at it Vhalen, Ive notived you Designer types have been amazingly quiet over our debate about the Vah Shir.

![]() In keeping with my alignement and race, I hide by the pad in KoS that moves back and forth between the palace of the awakened and the steps, and activate it whenever anyone gets close so i can watch them run off the edge and fall to their death. Is that griefing? or just wholesome entertainment?

![]() Ok he's the story of the Traditional Ratonga Skull Licking Greeting... Long ago when we Ratongas were slaves to the bad repiles wes were given very little foods, so the male ratonga would breaks out of their cages at night and steals the eggs from the nursery and bring thems back to the females and pups that were still locked up. Then the whole family would quickly eats the eggs and lick each other's skulls to remove any evidence so the reptiles would never knows, cause lizards are stupid like that. Now that Ratongas are free wes continue the tradition to pay respect to our enslaved relatives of long ago.

![]() I cant really quote where i heard this infomation but it was either on these forums here in the lore section.. the eq2 manual or in game about how teh ratonga were created by some darkelf in Neriak and set loose upon the world, though suppoed to be slaves of teh tierdal... something on those lines... ill have to recheck the academy of arcane science in freeport.. or perhaps the scribes in their backwater hovel of a neighborhood...

When I created a Ratonga on Antonia Bayle, I saught out their history and I found quite a bit of it.Brell created a Ratonga, but the Ratonga you see today were not the original Ratonga. Like the Gnolls, Brell had a gnack for putting his peoples underground, they survived and thrived in the depths of the world. When Brell created the Ratonga originally he inlisted the help of the God of mischief to aid in their creation, he wanted to create an intelligent and witty race who were could adapt extremely well to any situation, he originally called them: The Reokillik. The only problem with the Reokillik was that he made them _too_ well, too smart and witty for their own good, and with their free will intact- they very quickly became more of a problem than a proud child of his wisdom. Fearing that they were too cruel and unruly, Brell buried them deep underground where he believed they would not survive for long, and began work on a different kind of Reokillik, enter: The Ratonga. A slightly dumbed down version of the Reokillik, just as smart, just as tricky- but more passive and less driven by hate. Brell found these Ratonga to be good, and let them loose upon the world. The Ratonga had no interest in venturing outside their underground homes, or rather didn't for a very long time untill the shattering tore Antonica appart, and the Ratonga started leaking out of the woodwork, thats when their role in Norrath came to begin. Recently, we had the live even concerning several Ratonga popping out of mines and attacking players- These Ratonga are not the Ratonga we are used too, they are the original Reokillik that Brell created along with the god of mischief, they have surfaced and are causing mayhem.

![]() I read somewhere that one of the gods created a rat race...but more intelligent, larger, and stuff. However, they were too intelligent and tried doing something bad....so the god started over and made the type of rat people we see running around today (not as big, not as intelligent).

I was really disappointed that the Wheel of Vaniki wasn't a placeable item in my house! I *did* love the ending of that quest tho, lol.
