I did a very informal survey back in late January (linked below).

The results showed that the server was very Tank and Healer heavy, Illusionists where the 4th most played mage class at the time.

I'll recheck those numbers sometime soon but I'm willing to bet that their is a whole hell of a lot more Sorc and Conj classes then Enchanters and that the number of tanks (read zerkers) has gone down alot while the number of rangers would have gone though the roof.

.....

A survey of Antonia Bayle on a Sunday:
  Illusionists levels 20-29:  4, monks 22, templars 16, mystics 9, wizard 20
  Illusionists levels 30-39:  5, monks 13, templars 15, mystics 5, wizard 22
  Illusionists levels 40-49:  8, monks 13, templars 18, mystics 16, wizard 16
  Illusionists levels 50-60:  16, monks 31, templars 40, mystics 11, wizard 38

I don't think we should read too much into these stats.

When looking at the total number of illusionists versus bruisers, we have around 34 (keeps fluctuating), the bruisers only a few more at around 40.  But some argue the bruisers are the most powerful class in the game at the moment.

Time of day probably matters a lot, with more casual low level players on in the evenings, and high level hard-core players throughout the day.

One surprise, at the time I looked, there were fewer Troubadors on than Illusionists.  Considering how *useful* Troubadors are, I was a little surprised.  Also, fewer swashbucklers.

(And a health warning when doing these stats, the exact same command could produce 90 with one search and 5 with the next, so these stats may all be wrong :0)

No doubt in my mind that there are very few illusionists on Crushbone. I rarely see one. And I hear "man this is the first time ive grouped with an illusionist" alot as well.

Our numbers have always been low and will always be low, its because of Class discrimination and yes I am in the process of filing a lawsuit if your an illusionist and interested in joining our cause please call 1-800-FIX-MYCHANTERAZZ
We are seeking monetary damages for mental distress and also we would like 10x xp on all our toons from this point forward as well as a buff that increases all resists by 5k as well as buffing sta, str, wis, int, agi by 450 while placing one in bezerk mode while hasting one by 200% and giving breeze that regens 1k a tick and makes the group immune to AE and stun/stifle while giving a 100 time use spell reflect as well as melee reflect, of course to be fair guys this will also take up 2 concentration slots so the only other thing we can have up is our double=)

Join the cause.

The reason my "survey" numbers are so high is because they aren't from a survey.  They're from a census, using the search function in the eq2players.com website.  So it doesn't matter whether characters are logged in or not, these are the actual numbers of characters of those classes and levels being stored on the server (in this case, Kithicor). I'll do it again, and more extensively, now that I see this data isn't widely known.  Perhaps I'll cover all mage classes next time.

On Lavastorm on Monday night about 11 PM eastern time (prime time for most servers), I did a /who all 50 60 .  I repeated this for every class (illusionist, guardian, fury, etc).  The least played high level class on Lavastorm at that time was the coercer (2 players).  Defilers had 5 players.  Illusionist was the third least played class with 7 players (myself being one of them).  Most of the rest had 11-20.  Guardians and templars were the exceptions that had 33 and 35 players respectively.

Lavastorm is one of the smallest servers, BTW.  High level enchanters easily locked up the least played subclass archtype at high levels.

I repeated the /who results this morning (7 am eastern).  Nothing really changed except that there were no 50-60 coercers on my server at all then.  There were fewer of all high level classes, but absolutely no coercers.  The rest of the classes fell in line with my above numbers with fewer of all classes.

Ive just used the EQ2Players.com Characters Search which is about as accurate as your gonna get.
Although, these wont all be active, it will include all Illusionists ever made and played/ignored.

A survey of Najena 30/11/05 2pm GMT:
  Illusionists levels 20-29:  343, monks 721, templars 820, mystics 510, wizard 769.
  Illusionists levels 30-39:  101, monks 213, templars 324, mystics 142, wizard 270.
  Illusionists levels 40-49:  34  , monks 81  , templars 172, mystics 91  , wizard 147.
  Illusionists levels 50-60:  78  , monks 17  , templars 248, mystics 106, wizard 186.

As I said, not all of these numbers match ACTIVE players, but Its a safe bet to say the 78 Illusionists that have made it past level 50 are very likely to all still be playing that class. It seems as though from the Monks stats, everyone likes the idea of the class, but find it rubbish/hard to level/not what they were looking for in the class after only a few levels. Templars is as expected, but i found mystics to be surprisingly low compared to the amount that started out. Same with Wizards.

No it means there are a ton of people that have rolled brawler alts recently. I bet if you looked at the summoner classes you'd get similar data. That's why it's more meaningful to see what people are playing now, rather than what characters have been created. If there are lots of high level enchanter characters, but none of them are playing in game, that probably means they are either not fun to play, have no place in the game, or are underpowered. If you see a million brawlers and summoners under level 35, that means people see that as a fun and enjoyable class, and they're making alts of that class. When's the last time someone in your guild made an enchanter alt?

Zitha, the data supports your claim.  At least for the Kithicor server.

My main is a 60 Monk.  My alt is now a 32 illusionist.  So I am the exception SMILEY

We don't raid much but group often to take on some tough named.  To that end, yes the Illusionist will be god-like.  I understand the raiding concerns of you folks, but that doesn't pertain to us all that much.  And I can always jump on as the Monk if needed.

Just FYI, for those people trying to play the flavor of the month and rolled up a Monk, I can attest that yes, you will be a good tank with good damage - as long as you plan on staying away from the named mobs (lvl ^^^61 and up) at the end game.  67% avoidance doesnt mean jack against them.

Odd, my friend who's played a monk since february at level 60 has no issues tanking everything up to 64x4 mobs, and 65 heroics.

There are folks in all tank classes that would say the same thing so your comment is not surprising.  It probably depends on your circle of friends and their gear.  As I clearly stated, we don't raid.
