I have a lvl 25 paladin that I have been playing with a friend mostly in a duo scenario. But I have been wondering if maybe I would like a monk or berserker more. The paladin seems like it is pretty hard to kill with the ward and heals that it gets, so I am wondering if the other two classes have the same longevity, or if I were one of them I would be running from the rez point more? Also, I am curious as to how the tankability and dps of the three stand. The pally's dps really seems low (and yes I know that I am not a scout) and it would be nice to contribute a bit more to the downing of the mob in a timely manner. With only two taunts it really seems like the paladin lacks the aggro control of the guardian or the berzerker, or even the monk on a single target. Does this change, or am I not noticing something that gives them an equalizing boost?Basically my question is: What class would best suit me in the role of a tank in a duo/small group environment?

In a duo/small group context the paladin is the best tank around. You're a tank and a healer (remember we can heal ourselves way better than others). I can do SOS with just a couple Dmg dealers. About aggro, amends is your best friend, it's the best aggro buff out there. Put it on your friend warlock, wizard any scout etc.. and they can unleash safely while you go completely defensive, stay alive and your friend will do the dmg to kill the mob.
Message Edited by Gwydion2000 on 08-28-2006 04:32 PM

personally i have to say it depends on who your buddys are, for duo/small group paladins are great cuz you dont have to have a dedicated healer, but at end game some areas that are great to farm require you to have a monk to get to them safely in a timely manner. we have the best longevity heal wise and are [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] good to combo with a summoner, but personally i think the best duo is monk paladin. go down in sanctum of the scaleborn to the room where 3 named spawn and the mobs drop masters twice as often as most other normal mobs and you can duo there all night long and get tons of phat lewt. i used to duo in CT back in the days of t6 with a 60 necro and me at lvl 52-56 to con the greys to him for named, i would make average 3pp a night even though he would mentor for some mobs and was like 4 levels higher. because of my buffs/heals we were doing [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] good. as for hate managment, its harder to tell what we have at that level compared to end game. in the end we get 2 taunts, a sheild bash/taunt which is really nice, rescue, amends, and sigil of heroism which is a 15 second group amends. since you are lower level what i would do myself is roll a monk and level both to 70, as it really depends on what you want to do and what is avalable small group wise. monks have some amazing defensive abilities, group feign death, some self heal (not a lot), and a lot more DPS than paladins, so if you want to get deep in a dungeon with just a wizard at your back, its good to have around. i still wouldnt trade my paladin to have a 70 monk though, just such an awesome class itself, which is why im saving my plats to raise a monk as well

My alternate Paladin is exclusively a group bug. I duo with a wizard or warlock, or do lower level guild groups with him, and I very rarely lose aggro. Amend (atonement at my level) on the right person seems to be the key. I can do groups without a healer if the group kills fast enough. My own healing is enough.

If your partner is a healer, then probably a higher DPS fighter type would be preferable, like a monk or berseker. But for all other partner types, Paladin is an ideal groupmate. He can fit in to do any role as needed.

If you want a combination of DPS and high mitigation, go zerker.Pallys are good all round tanks, and in a duo the heals and amends would be pretty handy. Amends the DPS partner, and ward yourself (healing = more hate) and meatshield your way around. If you take the STA AA line as a pally, you get a nice 10 second high immunity buff each 15 mins that would help on nameds.I like my pally, but if I were offered a chance to change class then zerker would be most tempting of the other classes.

Just to clarify, you get more than 2 taunts before 25.1 Single target taunt, 2 Group Taunt (PBAoE), 3 Shield Bash, which is your strongest single target taunt behind, 4 Rescue. this combined with Redemption on your duo partner should garuntee you hold agro UNLESS he starts AoEing a group encounter right from the beginning, (furies that get their big PBAoE in their early 30's like to do this) in which case any tank would lose control.Generally speaking, we are a great duo partner for scouts and mages, but if your buddy plays a healer then go with a different tank, especially if they are a shaman, not so bad with a druid. I play a Paladin because I want to.Dethnel O'Bradain 32 Paladin of Sanctuary, on Venekor
