View Full Version : When does a pally hit his/her stride?

I have heard that several classes do not really hit their stride until later in life. Some are 30, some 40 and others later. When is the 'magic point' for the pally, I currently have a lowbie level 22 paladin. I am just looking for an idea of how long it will take to get the true capability out of the pally since I have minimal play time and it will take me forever to get to late levels (40 and above), so I am looking for a fighter/scout type class that shows good capability early on (30ish or earlier if that is possible).

Thanks!

(same question asked to zerkers on their board)

Nothing distinct to be honest. When will you see an honest representation of abilities and capabilities (solo-ability, etc)? Some classes seem to have a skill that defines them and this threshold, like rampage for zerkers I have heard. Do pally's have such a spell/level/etc? I mean anyone can solo early on (through 20 at least). I played my zerk and pally up to 18 and 22 respectively and while their abilities were different, they had very similar capabilities to solo, do damage, etc. When do they become more distinct?

Well, Paladins improve noticeably around early 50s when they have got most of their abilities. However, nothing ever made so much of an improvement as equipment, potions, totems and upgraded spells.

You will see a huge difference at about 32, when you can solo in Zek and Enchanted Lands which are marvellous zones that won't bore you like TS. Not sure how your $$$ situation is, but collection quests are an easy way to bypass the 20-30 level range. Go to the broker and buy all the items you need to complete your shattered, cracked, weathered, etc bone quests and your scuffed etc. shards. Dragonbone Shards and coins of rivervale are also good. For seriously NOT much money you can probably level to 30 in a hurry using the collections. You will probably need about 1-2plat, to raise it I'd solo in Stormhold or Crypt of Betrayal, or harvest in TS and Nek. It may take 20 hours or so of adventuring, but belive me you can do it.

Anyway, Paladin is a fun class, i wouldn't have it any other way.

Hakanek

When we get amends. That was huge.

Things changed sooo much for Pally's after LU13 it is hard for me to say what was class defining now. For me I started to kick [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] in the 40's. But who knows now.

I found when I hit the forties and into the fifties that my toon really excelled. now that may be because it took me that long to put together how to play the class and tank, but I did find that around that time things seemed to get easier, more enjoyable and much easier to find groups.

i would say probably the mid to upper 50's is when paladins are at thier best.. 60-70 paladins do not get any spells that do any good amounts of damage.. it sucks too. well atleast for pvp..

I would say though, that there is a rut period. Like the late 20's early 30's don't have some of the bigger (cough, cough) spells, or CA;s. Plus getting closer to a new tier in armor etc, that was a really slow time for me. Seemed like it took forever, but once I got past that little hump was great.

Though I would agree, things fall into place, with Amend's. At least if your MT'ing, for group's, raids. /shrug

You hit a pretty good high in the teens if you master II your ward. You become like a tank and healer rolled into one It doesn't last that long though..

This was due to the taunt being a very nice divine debuff (and since pallys are divine dmgers) thinks picked up from there strait to 70 basically.
I've enjoyed my Pally all the way to level 69.Sure we're a slow soloer early on, but we're safe. We can solo green nameds that many other classes can't. But we're not top of the soloing pile.My biggest wow was at L55 when Consecrate arrived. Pull a few encounters of greens and whack out consecrate and your AoE spells. Great fun. It can annoy other players though if they're quest mobs, as they don't realise you're best dps is gained by pulling lots of mobs. Probably similar to a zerker's style. The L65 castigate spell is also good to add on top, if you get a large number of mobs putting dots on you, then it kicks serious dps on top. If offtanking though you don't get so many dots on you, so it's not so good. You also have to tell your healer when not to cure

Tank gets cured first whatever the cost... I've seen a 10k tank get one shotted by a named just becasue I didn't heal the debuff in time (fizzless grrrrr)As to the oringal question.... its early/mid 50s you've got your group heal (more valauble for agro as well as actual healing, just make sure you are actually healing somethign else its a waste of mana)... your tablet slot gets filled with mitigation (censors, tablets) so some of the mitigation gap between warriors and crusaders is filled; but perhaps more importanlty you are kickign around in Sinking Sands giving you enough money to start AD3ing all your 40-50 skills. Its all changed from when I lvled my pally up of course, my dps didn't change from lvl 18 to lvl 27 when I got the old oath strike and literally doubled my dps , that was the old 'sweet spot'

Well, it depends what you're fighting. I would never suggest a castigate tactic on a raid, but it and consecrate can help wade through group trash, and many named group encounters. My point was that hitting L55 was nice, getting consecrate and realising that we can do decent dps if we pull a few mobs and go for the AoE. Consecrate is great for aggro, if you know the fight isn't going to be a long one and you won't run out of power.Getting the ressurect skill was also a nice landmark.
