I wish our taunts would cast through another player, you know: the way you can target a player and cast a DD type spell on his/her target. I always seem to reflexively try this in the heat of battle (when the MOB gets on a caster) and get the “Not An Enemy” message.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have a lot of trouble targeting MOBs in this game for some reason. The TAB target feature seams a little “random” for some reason. Maybe I’m faced the wrong direction or something. But for me (largish Barbarian) it’s really tough to mouse-click that odd MOB in a multiple pull situation (yes, I use third person view) especially in a tight dungeon situation. Even out doors, if there are four or more MOB’s, I’m praying one of them doesn’t get on the caster.

This is the main reason I don’t feel entirely comfortable being MT in groups. I know our taunts aren’t meant to be on a par with Guardians, and rightly so, I just wish it was easier to target and at least try to get the MOBs attention. Any tips/hints? My computer equipment is pretty good: lag isn’t really an issue. . .it just seems hard to pick the MOBs out of a tight group.

Message Edited by Turii on 03-17-2005 07:49 AM
Humm...don't know why the font size is smaller on the last system. Oh well.

Message Edited by Turii on 03-17-2005 07:50 AM

I'm having all kinds of weird problems casting "through". DoF will sometimes not cast through, next try it will. I am also experiencing the same targeting problems. I just seem a lot slower than I was in EQ1 (where I was a paladin too). The problem with tabbing is that it will only tab through mobs you can actually see. That means that if you get an add on the back and it's eating up a group member, you have turn all the way around and try to target it behind the group member (nice if you're a shorty dorf). Hopefully the group member in question will have the mob targeted, but not always. External view should help but it lags me :/

<Off Topic>

Keeping the aggro is not all about the taunts, there are many other things you can do to help hold the aggro. There are a few Spells we have that will transfer hate. There is one (cannot think of the name off the top of my head) that transfer 30% hate towards you. I usually cast this on the Main Healer, and a DPS (Beserkers and Wizards Tend to need it the most).

Along with the most obvous Taunts , you have some "Shield Bash" abilities that will give some hate. I would also think that Spells that interrupt a target, will accrue some hate also, although it doesnt say it will. It's also important you do some decent damage to the enemy, that should help you keep the aggro.

I rarely have problems keeping the aggro at Level 40.

</Off Topic>

Targetting can always give you some problems if you are in a hallway or some other tight area. I usually find myself clicking on the enemy, just to avoid breaking mezzes. Other strategies would be after you kill a target, you will usually auto target the next enemy to hit you. This ensures you dont hit something that is mezzed. With the way Tabbing works right now (tabs to targets not currently engaged) It's always good to get into a habit of using an alternate method to tabbing.

Hope that helps.

Message Edited by TheGreatStoney on 03-17-2005 10:00 AM

But I was specifically wondering about targeting MOBs that have become attached to other players. It happens with more frequency than I like even using all the buffs/bashes/wards/taunts at our disposal. I've read many, many posts on how to taunt. I'm curious about how others are targeting.

Targeting something that has aggro on one of your group members can be hard to notice, especially in big groups. The best defense against this is Group macros. Every member of the group should have macros set to inform the group of what they are doing and what is attacking them. A simple "Help, <mob_name> is attacking me" should work. You will usually have to target it manually, since your group is assisting you.

You could try giving your group members specific instructions on what to do if a MOB attacks them. Such as, if a MOB attacks them, they should clear their target window (usually they will have the MT targetted to attack or cast through the MT), and then auto-target the offending MOB when it hits them again while they let the group know that X MOB is attacking them, at which point you can use your assist hotkey to target the MOB that is hitting them so that you can taunt it. It may sound a bit too complicated for what can potentially be an emergency situation, but if that's what you require in order to save their life, I think that most people will at least be willing to attempt to accomodate you. :smileywink:

You get the "Not An Enemy” message because they, particularly if a healer are tergeting themelves. If they target the mob attcking them , you would taunt the mob they are attacking, and a healer would be able to heal himself aswell, Most healers panic and target themselves making targeting their assailant difficult and the healer history.

I've gotten into the habit of targeting via proximity. I find it more dependable than trusting to the vagaries of the 'Target Next' command. Consider changing your key to 'Target Nearest' (its default setting is F. That way, with just a little manoeuvring, you can get a wandering creature under control with little to no trouble.

I use the Tab key myself. Works pretty well.

When someone gets agro I have to use the point and click, and taunt off. Keep perspective too. If you use all your upgraded taunts, ward, and put enough damage into the mob, losing agro is usually not your fault. I know this runs contrary to popular belief, but it is also the groups responsibility to work within the limits of the tank. A monk spamming skills or a wizard burning away is most likely not your responsibility. Chances are you are good at what you do, but if people continue to burn, point the finger at you, and talk about Guardians, I would suggest finding others to group with.

Herak Stonefinger

50 Paladin Unrest

Core

I've never been able to get the TAB feature to work when tageting because, as you said, it seems kind of random. F8 targets enemies only. Manual targeting is very difficult with group mobs.

Hi,

I also have some difficulties in using TAB so I tend to use it only when soloing. Why not when grouped? Because more than once I targeted a wondering mob so caused extra aggro

F8 is ok but as someone said it only targets mobs and if there is many involved in the fight by the time you reach the one attacking the healer, he/she may be already dead.

So I use the keys F2-F6 to target my own group mates. It makes it much easier since they added in an old patch the feature that shows who that group member is attacked by. It is also much quicker because usually the healer is at the same F button. If I remember well the healer is on F3 usually.

Basically if you use the F keys you will suddenly switch to your healer or group member in trouble so you will be targeting the mob attacking him/her and you can quickly cast Rescue/Noble Tone or any other spells that transfer/accrue hate.

You can also customize the keys to some more comfortable ones if you wish.

I may be beating a dead horse (the old pally one but ...

I highly recommend moving your hotkeys from the default lower right screen position to directly beneath your group member listing. I can very easily and effectively monitor the total health of my group at all times while i'm pressing hotkeys. Likewise, I have switched the look of the hotkeys by right clicking and choosing "Window Settings". I turned off the border and made the background and trimming invisible. I now have 5 rows of visable hotkeys at all times even though I primarily use 3. My screen real estate is laid out very nicely with about 10 percent of the upper screen used for AI and about 20 percent of the bottom screen used for 3 chat + my quest journal.

I use tab most of the time for targeting mobs, but switch to F8 when in tight spots like Cazic-Thule where you can easily auto select a non attacking mob at the end of one battle and pull it straight on your group to begin an unwanted second battle before mana is back on par. I have only screwed this up once, but using F8 has really helped in the tight spots. There's nothing more embarrasing then trying to nuke a piece of tree by your feet when tabbing It would be nice if tab eliminated harvestable resources during engaged combat then tab would be very efficient. However, I do like that you can tab through resources when harvesting for those rares

Thanks,

Kalen
