Penitent Essences

<DIV>Around level 23-25, Penitent Essences started to pop in my inventory from time to time. At first I thought it was some crap I mined but I kept them because after examining them, they were something that mentionned restoring faith or something like that. From then on, I noticed they were accumulating in my inventory and figured they would be important sometime.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Well that time arrived when I reached 26 and got our new heal that requires a penitent essence as reagent. <DIV>I am pretty sure you get them from the spell, Blessing of the Penitent.  Note they both have the word Penitent <img src="/smilies/69934afc394145350659cd7add244ca9.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  Was going through my list trying to figure it out and was like duh.  Not sure what triggers you to get the item though.  Don't know if its when you get hit or when you hit something.  I've gotten two during one battle before and sometime non from several battles while having it up.  When you get one, it has like a red sparkly effect around you i think.  I used to not use the spell much cause it was like a 40 hp buff or something.  But i used it recently and thats when i noticed i started getting these.  Anyways thats what i figure is causing me to get these essences.</DIV>

<DIV>I use only Blinding Light instead of Smite prayer so its definetly not Smite Prayer that gives the essences. I do use Blessing of the Penitent a lot so they could be coming from there.</DIV>

I got half a dozen essences before I even had BotP. My guess it's just something that happens. You don't have to cast anything special or do anything at all. All you have to do is group (because I've NEVER got one when soloing) and kill stuff.

<DIV>OK, i decided to run real quick and test out how i thought i got my essences.  I went out to the gnoll defenders jsut a bit outside BB.  They are blue con solo.  Took off all my buffs other than Blessing of the penitent.  Had my pack open to where my essences were to see when it goes up. I used no skills other than blessed aid to heal myself and blessing of the penitent. First 3 battles i got nothing.  4th battle, during the battle i saw that red sparkly effect on me, and i had one more essence in my pack.    Then i tried the method suggested above with the smite prayer, casting it before the mob died, got nothing out of 3 times.   You can get them solo for sure.  Doesn't seem to happen often, nor do i still know if its off of you hitting the mob or the mob hitting you as i stated in my first post.   Not sure how khael got some before getting the spell blessing of the penitent, but i still think  you have to cast something at least, cause if you could get them jsut without anything specific skill/spell like khael said, i would think i would have recieved at least one before lvl 25.  anyways, that was jsut a quick test i did, more input would be great to get this down for sure.</DIV>

<DIV>I remember getting one around level 17-18. I had no idea what it was so I destroyed it. I think the essences are something that you just have a chance to collect, which probably increases with level. No spells required.</DIV>

<DIV>Um are you talking about the things that look like little blue glowies in your inventory? You get those from a priest. All priest get a spell that puts an item in your inventory, if the priest dies you can resurect them with it. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

As long as the spell is in effect, everytime the paladin is struck there is a chance of a penitent essense being placed in your inventory.</DIV>

I dont remember seing them until i was 24..I've got about 45 now..the heal spell they're used for is useful.. it's like a self-only LoH with a 5min timer instead of 30min..

This yeilded no essences.  Now if im buffing myself and tanking either for a group or soloing then the essences start comign faster then i can do something with them.  I believe you must take a certain amount of damage while buffed for an essence to appear.</DIV>

It's probably simply an augment. Meaning you'll get the essences even if you don't use the buff (and prior to 24 too) but only much more rarely. The spell augments your chance to get an essence (per hit taken). That's the only explanation I can think of that fits all the facts.

Blessing of the Penitent gives you a HP buff and the ability to randomly get a penitent essence when hit. I don't see why there is even a discussion about it.
